The last couple of games, Mathis has not had really any good returns. He averaged about 28.5 against the Rams, and only 28.4 today against the Ravens. Is it because other teams are realizing he can take it back, or is he just not doing well, or is it the blocking? Just want to hear what you think.

He had good returns today on the kickoff squad, but he is not a good punt return man. He said before the draft that he was never overly comfortable on punt returns. I think training Morency to do punt returns would be a worthwhile endeavor.

The kick return game just has a certain ebb and flow to it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't go as well. If you look at the returns he broke out for long gains, they weren't a lane created by the blocking; they were a product of his playmaking skill. He changed field and danced and darted more than just finding a crease and hitting it. That is what makes him such an exciting player, but it's not going to be there every game.

Mathis was successfull at starting toward one sideline, sucking the defenders in, and then racing to the opposite sideline. I couldn't watch the game today, but maybe they're just not falling for that anymore and maybe he's not that good at running it the normal way. I would first get him off of punt return duty and see if that helps the situation. The Morency idea works for me.

Some thoughts on Mathis.
1. It looks like he was trying too hard. 2. He is not comfortable returning punts. 3. And he hasn't had much experience doing it in open air stadiums. The wind looked pretty wicked there too. |

he made some rookie mistakes... he isnt gonna bring one to the house every game.
despite his troubles against the Ravens.. he still had a couple great returns. Hes gonna be a great player for us for a long time. |

Only 28.5? Last time I checked, that was still pretty good. Players aren't "on" all the time.

Dispite fumbling a bit, Mathis did real good. Returning punts is tought and often associated with funbles. As a rookie one can only expect him to make these rookie mistakes. Dispite the fumbling, he DID manage a rather impressive yardage on the punt returns. Rookie mistake, he'll get better once he builds up his confidence with the punt return role.

Returning punts is too dangerous. Let's take Buchannon off the IR list and make him do it.

DeAngelo Hall has done the same thing. He has good days and bad days. Good returns and bad ones. Noone will ever be able to break every return for a long gain

Yeah, I got used to seeing him with a +30 average, that I forgot 30 yards is great.

Mathis is doing pretty well IMO, he just had an off game.

It takes more agility to return punts than it does on kickoffs, on punts you normally have to make a couple of guys miss to take it back whereas on kickoffs its normally one move and go... The reason i say this is because mathis isn't the kinda guy that makes people miss, he flat runs past people and they misread his speed and take bad angles
