Default Long Distance Optimism

I am thrilled everyone has picked us to finish DEAD LAST (remember "Major League"), they usually are about as right as weatherman on his predictions. How many KNOWLEDGEABLE(?????) groups had Miami as a Super Bowl lock in 2003. I print out ESPN predictions and at end of season look at them, last year they should have stuck to playing jacks instead of picking division and Super Bowl teams.

I live near Dallas and only news we get is about 2nd BEST PRO TEAM IN TEXAS, give me a D.....give me an A...you know what I am spelling. Thank God for Houston Texans website, Houston Chronicle online edition and Fox Sports Southwest and the internet for news on Texans.

I see us getting an 8-8 season in 2004, have we lost 4 games to Titans...YES. However we had the lead going into 4th quarter last game in 2003 with such an injured and tired D that we couldn't hold it. We also held Indy to a close game so should we be ashamed...HECK (for lack of a stronger word) NO.

We are as good as any other team in AFC, will we go 16=0....NO, will we lose games we should win....YES we are a young team, we have a ways to go but we have no reason to hang our heads.

FACTS

We are 1st expansion team EVER to win back to back season openers

We are 1st expansion team (since Vikings) to win season opener

we are 1st expansion team since Vikings and since no more guarantees (1 player per team to Pro Bowl) to send 2 players to Pro Bowl.

We tied for 2nd best all-time record by an expansion team 4-12 (Jacksonville Jaguars also 1st year 4-12)

We didn't make playoffs 2nd year like last 2 expansion teams....BUT NFL changed rules so that wouldn't happen again. We are good young team going places, playoffs will come in time in the toughest division in AFC

While our team works out in heat and humidity that is Houston, the other team wimped out and ran off to Oxnard, CA average August temperature is 80

Texans are the only pro team working out in Texas, the only team representative of TOUGHNESS and HARD WORK Texas is known for.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOO TEXANS!!!!!!

One thing to remember is that if everyone picks you to do well you can't be the Cinderella team. If we are going to be the "surprise" team in the NFL we are off to a good start.

I think we will be a "Surprise" team, but that probably will not equate in to a play off spot. Just a recognision that we are a tough up and coming team and if you need to win a game, Houston isn't a team you want to have to do it against.

Post Tough Division

While the AFC South is a tough division-there is a legitimate chance the Texans could surprise a lot of folks.

I don't know how Tennessee can say they are stronger this year than last...key losses like McCarrons, Kearse and George will definitely affect them early.

Indianapolis looks like the class of the division and should compete to be the AFC representative in Jacksonville, but the big Manning contract could hurt their depth in the long run.

Jacksonville is a crap shoot...who knows how good Leftwich will be, and they still have questions at WR and in my opinion health at the running back slot.

Now as for the Texans...young still, but the defense should be greatly improved...heck just getting Walker and Glenn back is liking picking up an additional two first round draft picks...Robinson looks like the real deal and I love the move of Coleman to safety...all in all I think we get a unit that looks a lot more like the 2002 group and not the injury plagued 2003 squad.
Offensively we should be much more efficient..."the triplets" should all show great improvement again this year and the addtion of Wade at tackle and Bruener at TE makes the offensive line much more formidable.

I don't know where we will ultimately end up (7-9 to 10-6 could all be argued), but I know this...I think Texans fans are in for another great year and there is an outside chance the last few games of this '04 season could actually mean something for the first time in our history.

Whats wrong with the health at RB... Fred Taylor has had 32 straight starts and Labranon Toefield and Greg Jones are good backups, and whats wrong with the recievers?

I think your recievers and RB's are fine (health on Taylor is quesitonable). Your holes are in the secondary and devensive end.

That was very well stated. This year should be an exciting one for Texans fans. Looking back at last year, we were in several games with the top teams in the NFL. The fact that we almost beat New England, which was clearly a better team is something to take heart in. This year the Texans addressed several key areas which should go a long way towards helping them win. Add to the fact that the offensive line has now played together (most of them) for two seasons will also help. And on defense, I look for Babin to provide the much needed pass rush that has been missing over the last two years.

So if they go 7-9 (which is what I expect), I think this season should be viewed as a success. Anything North of that is icing on the cake!

you are right about the backs...I should have said if they stay healthy....they are fine...my bad...as for the recievers...I still question them...not sure they are as deep as some groups in the league...

I think we have fine depth at the WR spot. You may not know that the coaches love Derrick Armstrong.

Fiddy...was commenting on my feelings about the Jags corps...(forgot to post the quote-D'oh)...in my opinion pretty much middle of the pack type group...I am excited about what Texans receivers could accomplish this year...they say the biggest jump for a receiver is from year 1 to year 2...if that is the case for Andre...look out AFC South DB's
