Default Is Pendry babying Carr?

I'm sorry, but the playcalling was pretty demoralizing today. And I'm not sure who should be more embarrassed: Carr or that Oline. I have never seen playcalling like what we had tonight. And I mean NEVER. Even when Carr was getting sacked left and right as a rookie, we still just let Carr play instead of calling this short, pitter-patter excuse for a passing game. The way Pendry called the game, it was like he had absolutely no faith in Carr or that Oline. NONE.

To make Carr throw only short, easy out routes all day long has just gotta be a slap in the face. It just shows his lack of trust in Carr and the Oline. I know you're trying to protect Carr, but this is a little extreme isn't it? At some point, you've just got to let him play! Didn't our offense play decent last week? Just let them play a little! It just seemed like Carr was being really babied today. If you want to protect Carr, than run the damn football. But don't force Carr to play in this patty-cake short-pass offense. You might as well put him on the bench.

First priority after Pendry took the lead is to lower the amount of sacks, that neccesitates short passes and alot of balls thrown away. While it's not pretty it DOES lower the amount of sacks.

Plus it looks better for an International audience if you don't see your QB pulling his helmet outta the turf after being crunched on every play that the O-Line happen to miss blocks. At least he looked like a shadow of a QB against the Chiefs, more so than in other games...

OH NO! Tell me this farce wasn't televised in Australia.

Side note: Almost moved to Adelaide when a young man. Still wonder what might have been.

It also lowers our total yardage, points scored, odds of winning, etc.

Last year's line was better, even before the injuires.

But atleast we will have some resemblence of a QB left for next season when a real NFL front office and coaching staff takes over.

I'll agree with that at this point in the season, but we've given up the same amount (or within 1 or 2) of sacks this season that we had in all of last season. Pendry should not dodge any blame in this. His decision to start Riley ahead of Wand for no apparent reason, and stunting Wand's development for a year is one of the worst decisions that was made in camp. His refusal to rectify that mistake by not replacing Riley after the first 1 or 2 games compounds it. Even 4 games was much too long a time for Riley to keep playing. Wand gets no quality practice time; I maintain if he had been treated like Pitts was after Pitts' less than stellar first year, Wand would be a contributor. It is hard for him to come in a few plays a game this year and show any improvement because he doesn't get the practice time, much less the game time.

Wand took a lot of blame last year, but this season has proven that last year's offensive woes weren't solely the responsibility of the left tackle. He was a convenient scapegoat. At this point in the season, I don't see the logic in the RT/RG combo of Weigert/Riley over Wand/Weigert.

Riley needs to find another profession. Pendry should have seen that after game 1, probably in training camp.

As to babying Carr - Pendry, by his playcalling, is telling the team, the fans, the world that these guys aren't capable of playing nfl football. This team can only do baby steps. While this may or may not be true, the playcalling certainly isn't helping. If the team could get excited about each upcoming game, Pendry deflates any desire to win and I can't even imagine what that kind of play calling can do to an ego.

The entire situation is totally out of control.

I think it's pretty clear that winning football games is not the priority anymore. Protecting Carr is. I believe those are the instructions that Pendry has been given. By who, whether it's Capers or McNair, I don't know.
But the word has come down from somewhere.

If you look at it from that view, it's pretty easy to see what's going on. Yeah, the offense is crippled. But if you're left with the choice with either crippling the offense or crippling Carr . . what are going to do?

I think Carr had a really bad game. i am usually a fan of Carr, but even his short passes were off track. Did not help that Bradford was pouting about not starting anymore and ran the wrong routes. Pendry is using a shell offense. It will not work, but we should be able to beat really really bad teams. I mean only the Jets. Damn we dont play them this year. Protection of Carr is ok, but it might be time to just let it all hang out for the next 6 games.

I know what you're saying. I'd hate to see Carr hurt, but I'd also really like to see them try to play pro football. We can't even evaluate the players we have right now with this pathetic excuse for an offensive game plan.

Capers' halftime quote about seeing who wants to play or whatever is laughable. On the offensive side we don't give them a chance to show they want to play. If he wants players to show what they have, the coaches should sit down Bradford and Riley right now and give Armstrong and Wand significant playing time. Then they should go with a real offensive game plan. Who knows - it might even get better if the other team's defense has to cover more than 10 yards of the field.

I say cripple Carr. Hey, I want Carr to stay here in Houston, but you can't put Carr ahead of the team. This is what I mean by Carr getting babied. You need to call games so that you can have a chance at winning. You don't call games to not get your star QB hurt. :brickwall There was nothing going on in that game that showed us that we wanted to win that game. NOTHING. For gawd's sake we didn't even TRY to win that game! That's pretty sad. I really don't care if Carr gets sacked another 50 times, I think it's more important to do everything you can to win games. That didn't happen last night. It was pretty much "Hey, let's just go out and get this game over with w/o any injuries to Carr." That is PATHETIC. Just let these guys play because it's the best chance of getting a win. And if Carr gets taken out on a stretcher, so be it. You can at least say you did everything you could to win that game.

IMO this team and owner has given up on this year. It looks to me as if McNair or Pendry is just trying to save Carr from getting hurt so the team can look to next year when they get some new players and coaches. Why win and ruin our #1 overall pick? At least there is an upside! Usually I think it is more important to establish a character of trying to win every game no-matter what the record but this season has been a total disaster. I really don't know what to think about this year. Maybe since they can't even be semi-competative this year then it might be better just to play conservative to avoid any more major injuries.

Sure was, I watched the first half then decided it was time to tape the rest and go to bed. At least I did not see Carr getting sacked the Oline was 100% on the last game televised over here as well but this time around I was really dissapointed in the Defence. Ah well, there is next year or decade

This morning on 610am on the Steve McKinney show, McKinney stated that we had many more pass plays called but Carr kept checking to those hitch passes.

Interesting. I wonder if he was checking for valid reasons of the defensive set, or other reasons. Probably some combination of the two. This team is really in deep trouble right now.

The Bears have really turned it around in one year though...

I meant to type 'run plays' instead of pass plays. Carr kept checking to those hitch passes when the corners didn't press the WR's. This is just another comment debunking the myth that Carr isn't allowed to check to a pass. Carr also hasn't figured out you can't hitch pass your way to victories in the NFL.

I suspect this isn't so much a myth as an ongoing use of old information. I'd bet right when Pendry came in they only had an audible to a run and have since installed more options.
