Default Bob McNair's Spending Question

A question.

Like many of you, I am unnaturally preoccupied with all things Texans. So, I have to say, I was kind of surprised when I read something in the newspaper that surprised me and that I was not aware of.

http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory...ustice/3458553

Specifically, this quote:

"McNair has made mistakes, too. After spending more than $700 million on the franchise, he gave Capers a limited budget to hire a coaching staff.

If he had it to do over, would he give Capers more money to hire great offensive line and quarterback coaches? Would there be someone on the staff hired to tutor only the outside linebackers the most important position in a 3-4 defensive scheme?"

Really? This is the first I've heard of the Texans limited budget regarding coaching staff. Is this true??? Who are the coaches that we coulda got if McNair had spent the money, but didn't get? I thought we got all the folks that Capers wanted.

Anybody know anything about this other than what is rank speculation? Or is this news to others too?

Thanks for any insight regarding this.

I have no idea who Capers would have rather had instead of his current choices for coaches. All I know is that everyone from the owner to the water boy are responsible for the debacle this team is facing this year. I mainly blame the water boy. If he would have gotten to the players sooner and had a little more pep in his step, maybe our guys would be well hydrated on the field and not be so tired in the second half. Think about it....off with his head.

I'm very cynical of most of the "insight" the Chronicle gives when it comes to the Texans...they just seem to make a lot of uneducated guesses on many things.

I'm with Vinny on this. The Texans this season doesn't sell papers, but juicy gossip and inuendo probably does sell a few extra copies.

Myself, I find it hard to believe that Mr. McNair spent so much money to get a team and then handicaps them by not getting the best talent he can get on the field and front office.

I honestly believe he wants a winning team as much as (or more) we do.

Just my take, though, because anything is possible.

Seems they are more into the soap opera now than the actual game. I mean Carr's dad being asked to not go the practice belongs on some sore of National Enquirer page.

The only Chronicle guy that seems to have more than a fans knowledge of the Texans is John McClain. I don't always agree with his takes or opinions, but I do believe he has some inside info.

When someone writes "he gave Capers a limited budget to hire a coaching staff" and then doesn't substantiate or provide examples comparing that budget to other teams, it's one of two things: 1) true, but very poor writing, or 2) BS.

OK, that's what I was kinda thinking. This sort of comment about McNair was a new one to me, and seemed to fly in the face of everything I had heard about how the coaching staff was put together. I am leaning toward your number 2 BS option.

I mean, c'mon, could you imagine Capers going to McNair and saying I really need this and such QB coach and this and such linebacker coach, and McNair going all Lumbergh, and saying ah, right...no, I don't see a need to improve in those areas. And no Swingline either.

Seemed like a throwaway line in the article, but it sure did stand out to me.

Or someone is trying to keep their job on the staff by shaping the debate? Since the Indy game we have seen more articles with this tone.

Yes, I also mentioned this in another thread - maybe an out-of-touch GM trying to distance himself from the embattled head coach? Adds to the drama if nothing else.

Default Curiousity is said to have killed the cat....

but sometimes gets you some answers.

This is Richard Justice's emailed explanation of this part of the article (I am guessing he doesn't mind me sharing this):

"Yes, it's true. It's also more complicated. McNair's top assistant set a limited budget on hiring coaches. For instance, a top O-line coach goes for around $800,000 (Hudson Houck and Alex Gibbs). The Texans spent about half that.

So the Texans ended up with some college guys.

But Capers isn't absolved, either. He brought too many of his buddies with him.

And neither is the front office. When Joe Gibbs hired Greg Williams, he allowed him to bring in only one buddy. Otherwise, they had to go hire the best of the best.

Both Capers and Casserly brought in their cronies. Both have been failed by their cronies."

So there you have it.

Dom's buddy system is well known but I barely got to the part about "...a top O-line coach goes for around $800,000 (Hudson Houck and Alex Gibbs). The Texans spent about half that..." when I had to take a deep breath and count to ten.

Was it that McNair was being stingy with Capers' coaching budget, or was it the case that if Capers really wanted to go out and get top of the line coaches, instead of his buddies, he could have convinced Bob to give him more money to do so?

Being comfortable with whom you hire is important but Tony Marciano had about as much business coaching the OL those first two years as you or I did.

Weren't Houck and Gibbs signned with other teams when the franchise was started? I don't know anything about coaches contracts, but can they be vioded if the coach gets a better offer or what?

The Texans missed on Houck twice. He left Dallas after the 2001 season and went to San Diego for 3 years. They then missed him again this last off-season (one of the worst indictment's of management IMO) and he went from San Diego to Miami. I don't know if there is an actual rule about it, but it seems most teams let coaches interview and leave for promotions but will sometimes say no early in a contract. For example the Texans' DL coach was allowed to leave to become the Browns DC but Pendry was not allowed to interview in Miami (which should have told us something).

No doubt. IF any of this is true, then there are some dinks in Mr. McNair's armor, 'eh?

I'm not taking anything away from our owner, nor will I ever have anything but deep gratitude and respect for his leadership role in bringing NFL football back to our fair city...but...you have to spend the money to get quality personnel.

I'm sure he already knows that, though, because you don't become a billionaire by being a dummy. Which is why I'm more on the doubtful side of this story and chalk it up to speculation and innuendo around a losing season.

"The last four games we looked like the team we all expected to play 16 games," he said. "Whatever happened before that, who knows? We've got to keep focused, keep fighting, keep improving. We're not a 1-8 ballclub."

That is a quote from Charley Casserly. So, the last four games are the club we waited all offseason to see? The one that beat Clevaland only because they gave away the game. The 1-3 team that can put one whole decent drive together a game, and get excited about it? The team that has a high team score of 20, and that had a long pass play of 16 yards a week ago? Let's see, so, we were supposed to see a 4-12 team? Is that the idea. This whole franchise top to bottom has such a loser's mentality it's pathetic. :brickwall
