Default Coleman has become the weak link on defense

The experiment to move a former fine CB to Free Safety to extend his career has failed. I don't know what is wrong with Coleman but he looks somewhere between absolutely lost as to where he is supposed to be on most plays (best case) to "I really don't care to compete anymore" (worst case).

He is blowing assignments, not running hard to the ball, throwing a shoulder vs. wrapping up when he is in position to make a play etc... Our production from the FS spot is so bad that Matt Stevens would not be any worse. To make matters worse, our brilliant coaches keep sending him out there rather than benching him.

I thought he played awful as well. I look forward to reviewing the game tape, but not sure how much that will yield as he is usally out of the picture before the snap.

Coleman has seemed like he gave up on the year ever since about week 3. I wouldn't mind seeing Earl and Brown out there together at safeties and benching Coleman. Either way I don't expect Coleman to be here next season.

Coleman has been absolutely wretched this year and yesterday was a new low. We need to cut him and that stupid contract that Casserly gave him and go out and sign a veteran FA FS. It looks like he has quit on the team. I thought he was primed for his best year and was supportive early on...but geez, his play is a microcosm of this team’s problem.

I agree but at this point there's not much talent out there to sign, so I would say we bench him for the remaining 8 games and put Brown out there with either Earl or Simmons. I know Simmons can at least hit people and Brown is always around the ball. I didn't get to watch many games last year so I am not as familiar with Glenn Earl's abilities.

I think Earl has lost a step and may never regain it. I was watching many of my game recordings from last year a while back and he didn't have any make up speed and took a ton of bad angles where he got beat by guys on a regular basis.

Coleman does look like he has lost it--both in comprehending the game (you have Wilford and Wilford only to be concerned with and let him waltz, polka and tango his way into the end-zone without a thought of covering him) and effort. His tackling on average this year has been far worse than Buchanon's.

Yeah, that was my general impression what little I saw of him last year, but I have seen people on previous threads that wanted him to start at SS so I wasn't sure if I had missed something good out of him last year.

It's been two weeks in row now that Coleman has caught my eye as playing pretty badly. He's is not help right now and is not making plays. All of the other players are stepping it up on defense except for Greenwood, Coleman and CC.

The problem is that Coleman is still the best cover guy they have amongst the safeties. CC is getting better, but is still more of a hitter. Glenn Earl is on the outs because he can't cover. Simmons may be a good choice. He is always all out effort on the field.

We can do alot worse than having Simmons at FS and Brown at SS. This roster is going to be demolished after this season, we aren't even going to recognize it.

On paper maybe Coleman should be our best cover guy but he has not and is not covering anyone this year at all. Honestly, it looks like we are playing our 10 against their 11 when he is on the field.

BTW, on the upside, PBuch (punt returns aside) actually is playing better the last couple of weeks IMO.

Coleman is the new breed of free safety- he doesn't tackle or cover.

two more years....alot of things will change. right now there is no intimadation in the Texans secondary, unless you consider Dunta's cover skills. what I'm talking about is hard hitting and physcial play from the Safetys. CC Brown was a 6th rd pick, and has bigger hits even though he is only 6'0 200 lbs. the Texans are not going to scare any NFL teams WR's going down the middle of the field with Coleman as FS & Brown the SS.

Part of the problem is that we almost never have our safeties do anything except a cover 2 deep zone. They can't keep up with most WRs but we do nothing but sit back in soft zones and give the QB all day to find someone open, and once they get down there our safeties and CBs except Dunta won't tackle anyone.

At the end of last year the defense played much better without Coleman and everybody told me it was a coincidence. He let people get behind him and can't hit or tackle. Not a good combination when you are playing Safety.

Coleman has looked like he just doesn't care anymore the last several weeks. At the beginning of yesterday's game I thought he actually looked relatively hyped up for once, but then the game went on and that went out the window. That long pass they caught where Coleman got that illegal contact call was ridiculous too. As a safety, especially when running a zone like that, you have to realize that you are the last guy back and when someone is running full speed at you, you have to do more than jog over and try to grab him like you're playing touch football, we're lucky he at least slowed him up on that so he didn't score a TD, but that effort was appalling.

Your observations are spot on. What drives me crazy (and will continue to do so until they get fired) is how this coaching staff refuses to step up and deal with this stuff. I mean geez...what else do you need to think about? There has to be accountablility in order for there to be integrity. How much game time would Coleman see on a Parcells team for example????

I agree, although I think Earl has been bothered by injuries again this year and I'm not sure if he's ready to go out and play yet. I wouldn't mind seeing Simmons and Brown back there together. Neither one will get an INT but they will both tackle and Simmons will hit people on a frequent basis. I wouldn't mind seeing Jason Bell back there either. He's not especially fast for a CB but he's pretty big and he tackles pretty well and also likes to hit. I think Bell, Brown, and Simmons rotating at S could do pretty well. I think we should at least try it if Coleman doesn't turn it around soon, if nothing else to get hungry players in there and evaluate what they can do so next year's coach knows if any of them are worth keeping around.
