Default Your 06 Texans

If it were up to you, who would you keep (starters), release, and draft?

QB - Carr

RB - Davis

WR - Johnson, Mathis, Gaffney, and Armstrong. Bradford can go.

TE - Bruener can stay, we need to try for a good blocking TE that has good hands in the draft. I am not sure of the status of Joppru, but I wouldn't count on his play.

RT - Sign a free agent and cut Wade

RG - Weigert, unless a decent free agent is availble.

C - This one is up in the air, maybe Hodgon will get better
LG - Pitts

LT - Draft D'brickshaw and go from there.

FB - Norris, I like this guy, he can block well.

DT - Payne is solid, not special, but not bad.

DE - Robaire Smith is a hog, and has great work ethic. Walker had a great game last week, but will it last? If he can return to the old Gfunk, I would keep rotating him and TJ.

OLB - Peek stays, for sure. His energy is what this team needs. Babin and Orr can both be moved to 2nd string. I would look for a solid OLD in free agency.

MLB - Wong and Greenwood would both get another chance. Both are solid, but if they slip I would be looking for a different starter the following season.

CB - Robinson stays at left. He is developing into a great corner and would stay with this franchise for many years. Buchannon would stick to covering the other teams #2 wr. The guy has talent, but needs to find himself. I would cut Faggins. The guy cannot keep getting beat like he does. I would cut him and try and find a solid nickel corner in the draft.

S - I would give Coleman one more season and see how he ages. He seems almost like he is slipping this year. I would also keep CC Brown, I like his work ethic and seems to be a good tackler.

Brown and Stanley both stay.

Of course you're assuming that the Texans stick with the 34 defense they currently deploy. If you go with a new staff that's more comfortable with the 43 defense, more changes would be needed.

DT - I think you'd be set there with Smith, Payne, Walker, & TJ. Maybe too many bodies.

DE - I don't think either Peek or Babin would hold up as a 43 DE. Maybe Babin could put on the weight, I'm not sure. You probably need 2 new guys, here.

SOLB - I think Babin & Charlie Anderson could fight it out for this spot.

MLB - Wong played the position at Minnesota. Polk has improved. Still think a rookie would have to be brought in to push these guys.

WOLB - Greenwood could play here. Maybe Orr could back him up.

LCB - Dunta is the man.

RCB - I think a starter is needed. P-Buch & Petey could fight for the 3rd corner spot.

SS - CC should improve with another season.

FS - I'd dump Coleman. He's not the answer and FS aren't hard to find on the open market.

That would be 5 new additions to the defense. At a minimum. Taking into account the changes on offense, this will clearly take more than a year to turn the Texans into contenders. What a mess.

It's not the first time. I believe that Coleman got a huge bonus and a nice extension before last season. He's definetely one of the highest paid (overpaid) safeties in the league.

Without commenting to his pay, I like what Coleman brings to the table. He's not the hard hitter that some like to see at FS, but he's definitely a ball hawk. This year, there's not much going our way for that to come out, but last year, I thought his style of play fit well for the position.

Coleman can't even cover a Tight End. They have eaten his lunch all season!

The last several games I think Coleman looks like he's given up on the year already. He doesn't like to hit people and he's not overly fast anymore so I would keep looking for a FS in the back of my mind if I was the GM, although it's not our biggest needy area right now.

QB - Keep Carr for the two year extension, see how he does behind a revamped O-line in '06 and be prepared to groom a new QB in '07.

RB - Davis, Norris, Morency, Wells. Davis is here for five more years and should be. In the right system, he could put up some incredible numbers. Norris a solid blocker, and Wells is a great all-around team guy and good depth.

WR - AJ (work on your hands!!), Gaffney, Mathis, Armstrong. I think our WR corps is fine.

TE - Bruener, Joppru, '06 draft pick. If Joppru doesn't pan out again, keep whichever of the other two we have now and get our '06 draft pick up to speed.

LT - 1st round draft pick, Wand - the two compete.

LG - Pitts.

C - Hodgdon - this is really our problem position, if we don't keep McKinney. Given his contract, I can see him being gone. If we somehow retain him for the vet minimum, he can compete with Hodgdon.

RG - Wiegert. Riley as a backup, maybe?

RT - Wade. He's a good run blocker, and with better coaching and a better scheme, I don't see him being the weakest link. Riley as a backup here as well?

I'm not big on Milford Brown as a backup, but we need too many positions, so maybe Brown stays for depth.

NT - Seth Payne. He's actually very highly regarded around the NFL and I think this year he's closer to his 2002 form than last year.

DE - TJohnson, RSmith, Ioane, Walker? - If Walker's contract situation keeps him here, he can still provide quality time, but TJ should be ready to start by next season. You don't take a guy mid-1st without that expectation. Ioane is a high-motor guy that provides good depth.

DE/LB - Babin, Peek - if we switch to a 4-3, Babin is probably our best bet for a 4-3 DE. I say line him up over the RT and put Walker next to him. Peek's motor will get him on the field at LB spot, maybe some spot time at DE.

LB - Wong, Greenwood, Polk, '06 draft pick - Steady, if not spectacular guys, but a young LB pick to groom for one of those spots would be a good idea.

CB - D-Rob, Faggins, '06 draft pick, P-Buch - Buchanon is the big question mark here. If he plays more games like this past one (20-yd. PR, 3 pass def., a few tackles) and fewer games like he did early on, then I think he could be a decent #2 corner. Whoever lines up across from D-Rob is going to get picked on, and as long as our QB pressure is inadequate, the secondary is going to get toasted. Faggins as no more than nickel, and I think it would be wise to get a young guy that you could bring along.

FS - Coleman, Earl, Brown - Not sure about Coleman's contract status, but I like what he brings to the position. Any chance either Earl or Brown could play FS? Maybe look for a FA signing here.

SS - Earl, Brown - you would think one of these two would nail it down, right?

I wouldn't mind seeing the first four rounds address O-line, TE, and secondary. Maybe get lucky with a LB in the 5th or something that turns out to be a contributor on ST while he refines his game. It would also be nice if one or two of the practice squad guys develop into a solid contributor.

Keepers for sure:
QB - Carr
RB - Davis, Morency
FB - Norris
WR - Johnson, Gaffney, Mathis, Armstrong
TE - Breuner
OL - Pitts, Weigert
DL - Smith, Payne, Johnson, Walker
LB - Peek, Babin, Orr, Wong
CB - Robinson, Buchanon (as a nickel)
S - Brown

On the bubble:
RB - Wells - decent blocker and short yardage runner, good special teams
TE - Murphy - still young, maybe keep and see what he can do
OL - Riley - would be better at OG, McKinney, Hodgdon
LB - Greenwood
CB - Faggins - as long as he isn't starting he could stay as NB/DB
S - Coleman - if no better option is available, Earl

Don't let the facts hit you in the butt. Coleman got a 3 year deal for about $3.3 a year. The franchise tag (average of top 5) is basically $5 mil this year. The transition tag (average of top 10) is $4.4 mil this year. Coleman is mid pack for pay grade. Now would we be getting as much bang for more buck in Marlon McCree--an argument can be made there. For a legitimate complaint--he has been hitting like a girl this year. Folks like to complain about P-Buc, but on a consistant basis this year Coleman has been a worse tackler--not to say P-Buc is good, just Coleman is worse.

Since this season is shot, I've been thinking about this for some time. I have a plan:

Dump:
Capers AND Casserly, hire a winning coach that has gotten real results in the past. Drop McKinney, Coleman, Riley, Bradford, others.

Draft:
1st=D'Brickashaw Ferguson LT-Virginia - Top flight LT worthy of a top 5 pick.
2nd=Thomas Howard OLB-UTEP - One of the fastest, most athletic linebackers you will ever see.
3rd=Joe Klopfenstein TE-Colorado - One of the top tight ends in the nation who has solidified all aspects of his game.
3rd (from Saints)=Rob Sims OG-Ohio St. - Smart, athletic and versatile; has been the regular at left tackle the past two years, but moved inside to a guard spot in 2005.

Starting Lineup
QB - David Carr
RB - Dom Davis
WR - Johnson, Mathis, Gaffney, Armstrong
TE - Joe Klopfenstein(r) and Mark Bruener
LT - D'Brickashaw Ferguson(r)
LG - Rob Sims(r)
C - Drew Hodgden
RG - Zach Weigert
RT - Chester Pitts

DL - Walker, Payne, Smith, Johnson
OLB - Thomas Howard(r) and Antwan Peek
ILB - Wong and Greenwood (FA?)
CB - Dunta Robinson and P-Burnt Buchanan (FA?)
S - CC Brown and Ramon Walker (FA?)

Free Agents
Since you're taking your lumps and getting rid of marginal overpaid performers like McKinney and Coleman, it would be nice to pick up a good free agent CB, FS, or LB.

Although it would be nice to get a shutdown CB in the draft, we need to get better on the line. Buchanan/Faggins/FA? would have to suffice at CB for now. Buchanan will be playing for a new contract, so you never know. Pitts is good enough to play LT, but we need both tackles. Getting a franchise LT would be great, we could move Pitts to RT.

Not a bad plan other than Buchanon shouldn't start (I'm fine with him being a nickel) so we'd need to draft/sign a good shutdown CB. I also do not like Ramon Walker starting at S, either Earl or else get someone else. I think Coleman has quit on the team so he shouldn't stick around.

QB: give car one more chance behind a solid o-line and a new coach

HB: DD is ok for now but is not a franchise back, would have to take a long time looking at reggie bush

FB: whatever

WR: keep Johnson, mathis gaffney, armstrong, and pick up another reciever to compete with arstrong.

TE: Definitely need to be looking TE this upcoming off-season

OL: keep the rookie center and best two o-lineman; and pick up two o-lineman via the draft

DL: Keep travis johnson smith and walker....look for young stud in draft or free-agency

LB: Draft either an outside or inside LB..Wong is interchangeable, keep green wood outside, peek/babin compete for the other OLB position

CB: faggins has to go, keep Robinson, keep buchanon...guy has talent whether you want to admit it or not, just needs a good coach to ride him, in the offseason pick up another corner capable of competing for the side opposite of robinson

FS: colemans gotta go...Would like to see CC. at that position

SS: if CC is not slid to FS then pick up a SS capable of starting in the off season

You know your schtick would be a lot more interesting if it provided any meat instead of just a kibble of Carr Sucks. It's fine to have that opinion, but how about backing it up?

Thanks for the texturized vegitable protein, i.e. vegitarian version of meat. Try making an argument Banks, Ragone or any FA who will be available will be better. I'll spot you a lead--I think Kitna is going to be a FA. Doubt he would come here without a promise of starting, but hey, he would be a lot better argument for you than Banks. In the end, that is the question, getting someone specific better, not just saying someone sucks. But then again, the latter is easier I guess.

QB - Carr and Ragone I keep, Banks I let go and I bring in a young #3 development guy but that's just because I think Ragone is ready to be the backup here. If Ragone does anything between now and then to prove he can't handle it then I cut him too and sign a vet, draft a rookie in the off-season. We can do better than Tony Banks as our #2. Of that I'm certain.

RB - Davis, Wells, and Morency I keep. I need one more year before I can go hunting my franchise back unless of course one just falls to me.

WR - Johnson, Mathis, Gaffney, and Armstrong stay and Corey Bradfords time is up. Draft another WR in 2006. Second day.

TE - Joppru gets one more chance but I draft his replacement anyway. No way in the world I'm counting on him to play for me after the three years he's had in the NFL. Bruener comes to camp but doesn't make the team if everything works out the way it should.

RT - Wade stays but we're drafting a LT who might see time at RT. Even if it's one of the top LT's in the draft he might start in place of Wade if necessary to get him reps and on the field.

RG - Weigert goes IMO. It's not that he isn't good but he's hurt literally all of the time. Zack is just getting to the age where he's easily dinged up. Depending on what his cap hit is in 2006 he might come to camp but I have serious doubts about him making the team.

C - Hodgdon will get better but I'm still drafting another center who I hope can push him to the bench. Might not happen but a man can dream right? Behind Hodgdon will sit Steve McKinney who moves back to center if we ever lose our first two. Obviously Todd Washington is done here.

LG - McKinney gets the nod here for one more year. It's not that Pitts isn't going to eventually be my LG, it's just that the LT I draft isn't going to be ready to play right out of the gate as a rookie. He'll probably get a year in at RT before I move him to LT so that means Chester needs to hold down the LT spot one more year. Probably. I'm going to take the first LT in the draft so if I'm lucky and get one who can play from day one then cool. Pitts is then my LG and McKinney either backs up or hits the road.

LT - Draft D'brickshaw (Or whoever ends up being the highest rated LT of this draft class) but more than likely I need to leave Chester here for another year. See LG comment and RT comment above.

FB - Norris, no questions asked. He's our FB.

DT - Payne is solid but I'm going to be looking for one more big body in free agency if I can find one. He probably won't be replacing Payne but he must be able to play here if needed.

DE - Robaire Smith stays. Walker I love but he's at the same crossroads as Weigert I think and may not make it out of camp if I can get a solid FA DT. TJ of course stays and starts next season so he'd better pick up the pace.

OLB - Peek and Babin both stay but nothing is carved in stone. One of my first day picks is going to be an OLB if I don't find one in free agency to get it done. Someone is probably going ot be pushed out of a starting spot and further down someone else isn't going to make the team.

MLB - Wong and Greenwood both come back but again I'm looking at linebackers in free agency and if a good inside LB shakes loose one of these two might be sitting on the bench or looking for a job before camp ends.

CB - Robinson, Buchanon, and Faggins would probably all three be coming back. I'm more focused on increasing the pressure up front than replacing corners. As little pressure as we put on QB's I think it's no wonder our backfield looks bad. They get another year to show what they can do with some real pass rushing to help them out.

S - Coleman comes to camp but his job isn't a sure thing. Brown and Earl both come back too. I'm not terribly worried about our safeties this season just like I'm not terribly worried about our corners. They look lousy much of the time but I'd like to see what they do with a pass rush before making major changes. Plus you can't change it all in one offseason anyway.

Brown and Stanley both stay. This is obvious.
