i thought about him and it would be great if he would come but i doubt it. i can imagine houston like pittsburgh with the aggressive defense and power running game.......

He said in the article that he wants to stay long enough for his son to replace him. Weis has way too much pride an honor to ditch his alma mater for another ring.

This guy gets more awesome each week. He is what real football is about.

That's hurtful. Notre Dame is showing a commitment to him and he is showing a commitment to them. He won't leave this year, but maybe in a few years, depending on what he does.

Ty Willingham had a much better start (8-0) at Notre Dame than what Weiss is going through. Where was his extension?

IMO the guy on 610 am just hit the nail on the head on this. Weiss already being actively pursued for NFL head coaching jobs while Willingham was not. Basically this extension was a response to that and Pastabelly's reporting how low Weiss' contract buy-out amount was. Basically a defensive contract extension.

I like The Great One's point. I just don't see the justification in the extension. And as far as extensions go, I believe that Bob Davies got one as well in his first year. So really, NFL teams inquiring about a coach shouldn't be an excuse for one. I'm sure the most basic NFL franchise can purchase a Notre Dame for themselves if they wanted to badly enough. Please.

Obviously they like what they see out of Weiss. They didn't like something about Willingham apparently. People who want to secure what they deeply appreciate make a move sometimes.

On the point about extra years, we don't know what is in the new contract so just saying that they "just" added years is probably just an assumption.

Weis has embraced Notre Dame much more than Willingham did. Weis is all about tradition and has made a point to bring back the Notre Dame legends to make sure that the team understands who they are playing for.

This also helps for recruiting because up and coming recruits will see Notre Dame as a stable situation rather than one where the coach is going to split for the NFL any year now.

If an NFL wants Weis, they're still going to buy-out his contract. This extension makes Weis the highest (or one of) paid coach in the country. Even that much is not enough to scare away the deep pockets of the NFL.

But I agree about the intent.

Well whatever it is that they see in Weis, I don't see how they didn't see it in Willingham's first year.

1. He was a great PR move because he was the school's first black coach.
2. His record at this point (8-0) was better than Weiss' current record (5-2).

Personally, I think they're jumping on Weiss' bandwagon a bit prematurely. Having a solid first season (if you call getting beat at home by Michigan State "solid") guarantees nothing.

Was Willingham ever considered a threat to split for the NFL at any given year? This contract extension doesn't mean Weiss won't split. It just shows the school is willing to make a committement to him...not the other way around.
