Default Leinart no longer #1 QB in draft?

Just read this on nfl.com
Its an interesting point, but I must disagree with it. Over and over I have heard college sport commentators say "I have never seen a college QB do that!" about Leinart. He calls his own plays at the line from a choice of 3 or more given to him by the coach. He sits in the pocket comfortably until he finds his open man. He throws bombs on 4th and short to single covered receivers and completes them! Anyway, interesting none the less. Here it is:

Quote:
(Oct. 18, 2005) -- For now, the opinion is in the minority. But perhaps over time, it will expand to the majority.

But one NFL person well familiar with top-flight quarterbacks said last week that Notre Dame's Brady Quinn is a better pro prospect than USC's Matt Leinart. He thinks Quinn's tough Midwestern roots will make a difference in the NFL, compared to Leinart's laid-back SoCal philosophies.

Again, this opinion, in all probability, is in the minority. But the larger point is it exists. It's out there.

Under new Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis, who worked so closely with Tom Brady in New England, Quinn has been allowed to thrive while being introduced to pro-style passing concepts.

Of course, there are no assurances Quinn even will declare himself eligible for the 2006 NFL Draft. But if he does, there are those who expect him to be a high pick -- and perhaps even a premium pick -- more capable than the reigning Heisman Trophy winner.

I've said a few times that it's too early to slot these guys...I haven't been all that impressed with Leinart myself. I like Drew Stanton quite a bit myself....he has a much better ability to scramble and he has NFL caliber escape-ability as well as being a solid passer.

Lienart is not going to come into the NFL on a bad team and be sucessful by himself. If he gets drafted by a team on the edge of good, He IS CLUTCH. Tom Brady, Big Ben type of clutch. If he is drafted by a team with few weapons he will not be sucessful early and could get beat up David Carr type crutch.I don't believe he will go #1, but if a team gets lucky they will pick him up. Raiders,Ravens, or Bears would probably be good for him. The Texans current GM said they would not take Lienart #1, because he does not believe Carr is the problem.

You mean like when they said Gallery was one of the top LTs of his time and
wothy to be ranked with other greats coming into the NFL, when the reality
now is even in his second year he's not good enough to displace journeyman Barry Simms as the starting LT for the Raiders.

I don't think Gallery carried as high a grade as the most elite top tier prospects. If I remember correctly blesto had him a tad lower than the Pace's and Boselli's and Munoz's

I was just wondering this. Do we know for a fact that Leinart audibled to pass to the receiver on that long play at the end of the game? I remember the announcers immediately saying that it was an audible, but how do they know? I mean right after the guy was tackled they were saying it was an audible. Isn't it possible that it was part of the play? I feel that ESPN is giving him way too much credit for a lot of the stuff he does. They always pick the one or two guys the want to succeed and always give them way too much credit. Just like when they were making Eli Manning seem like he was a Peyton clone.

and eli's been horrible so far this year?

if vince young declares he'll be viewed as a matt jones kinda prospect...not a qb.

leinart has had tremendus success but faced very little adversity. call him a product of the system or the talent around him with the potential to be much more.

another qb will emerge in the comming weeks be it omar jacobs, stanton, or someone else...

This is just me talking but I never liked a West Coast QB for some reason. Besides Aikman (I don't count Dilfer, he won a Super Bowl in spite of not because of) I can't recall a QB from a West Coast college to lead a team to the Bowl. I just remembered Elway too.

Eli Manning will be better than his brother. I said it once and all along mark my word.

Leinart reminds me of a left handed Dan Fouts.........

I think he'll be ok, when he gets a system that fits his style just like Dan finally did near the end of his career as the trigger switch to Air Coryell, the St. Louis Rams surely might be of interest, maybe we could trade the pick to them for their 1st and Orlando Pace

I don't agree with you there at all. I think someone takes him early and grooms like like the Oilers groomed Steve McNair. I think he will eventually be better than Randall Cunningham. I think he will evolve into a really special NFL QB.

Sorry to be off-topic, but couldn't resist that you brought up Montana... mainly that Montana came from Notre Dame, and hailed from west Pennsylvania. >_>

He'd have been the #1 QB in last year's draft. He'll be the #1 QB in this year's class and would be the #1 QB in next year's class.

Not to say he's the best QB prospect to come out in a long time...it's just been a bad run of college QBs lately.

Oh, and Vince Young will play QB in the NFL.

Why on earth would VY come out after one decent year? ala Akili Smith. Need I say more. Go back to school and hone your skills for goodness sake.
