“I can’t say for sure whether they’d be winners or not, but I know that me and Aaron would be getting down to what the problem is. It wouldn’t be like just going out there practicing and seeing what happens. We’re the type of guys that would go in there and try to see what’s going on. Either talk to the team ourselves or talk to the coaches or something. You can’t just have guys out there just practicing hard all day and what have you. The communication between coaches and the players is not there about what needs to be changed. You have to communicate and have everyone on the same boat, whether you’re winning one or two games or you’re winning eight or 10. You want the whole staff on the same page. One thing that was a negative that we've beaten to a pulp is the lack of leadership we have after we lost Aaron and Jamie. If you ask me, reading between the lines the coaches and the players just plain aren't communicating.

Thanks for the quotes, TEXANS84.

My two biggest concerns are addressed here: letting good veteran players go that could provide valuable leadership to their squads, and the lack of desire by the team to play for these coaches [for whatever reason(s)].

The fire and attitude on the field is set by example, and I think Glenn and Sharper were much, much more important to our defensive unit than we truly realized at the time they were let go. Our D doesn't even look like the same one we've been watching for the first three seasons.

Maybe Capers has that old school mentality that players are not supposed to question management, or maybe they just underestimated some fundamentally important aspects of building a successful team....I don't know what the true culprit is, because all we see is the symptoms.

But these quotes are telling, and it doesn't seem to me like it's sour grapes on Sharper's part.

He was the glue and emotional leader of the team... All he ever wanted to do was win! If communication is/was that big of a problem with the Texans, it's no wonder he cried out to the media over the problems within, when he was here.

I don't know if losing Sharper was a big deal, but losing a pro-bowl corner like Aaron Glenn was a huge loss. You would have thought that Glenn fit into our 4-5 year plan when we got him in the expansion draft.

With Dunta and Aaron, we were set for corner for at least a couple of years. A 3rd top-flight corner is a luxury you can't afford when you have the world's worst offensive line and a pretty pathetic defensive line and group of linebackers that can't pressure a QB. I can see why Aaron left. Casserly's obsession with the skill positions borders on neurotic.

What's odd is that from everything I've heard, Jamie was very outspoken in the media while in Houston. I can't remember a single quote from the guy while in Seattle - good or bad. I haven't heard a peep from him since he joined the team.

I also like that although Sharper's impact on the field statwise hasn't been very significant, he appears to have become the leader of that linebacking corps.
Sometimes people don't realize what kind of leadership they are giving away until they are gone and you replace them with someone else and the dropoff is noticeable, you take it for granted.

What seems strange to me is the effort to go with youth this offseason on defense. Apparently, Glenn and Sharper's veteran leadership weren't considered that valuable. Yet, as soon as training camp begins they pull Seth Wand out of the lineup and replace him with someone like Riley- who's essentially an offensive clone of Sharper and Glenn minus the talent and character.

Which is it? Do we value youth and potential or veteran leadership? I'd like to know what the heck is going on in the minds of Casserly and Capers. Oh yeah... Here's another example: we dump SThomas, KStarling in order to keep Corey Bradford- not only that, Bradford starts over Armstrong, Gaffney, and Mathis.

i dont remember hearing much, or anything at all, from sharper until last year when it seemed his frustration with the way things were being ran finally boiled over. he's always seemed like a quiet hardworker to me and to have so much to say about the situation shows his passion and utter frustration that he and the other players have to put up with such incompetance.

it's one of those things that's never going to sit well with me. sharper lead the NFL in tackles in 03 and top 5 in 04, and easily our best player on defense. is he going to lose a step in the next couple years? most likely. who cares?! he's going to remain a great linebacker and a leader on the field. it's my firm believing that sharper and payne are the only things holding that front 7 together. letting glenn go was just as silly. even if he's slowing down with his age he's still a probowl corner who can complement the shutdown corner we've landed in robinson. he's better than p-burnt & faggins combined, not to mention smarter and a leader. veterans with that kind of talent and character should be held onto at all costs because you see what happens when they're not here.

I wanted to reply to this thread but then I realized I was beating a dead horse one that is dead and buried and cremated and well you get the picture.

But what the heck I'll throw more dirt on a deep grave.

I recall in the offseason the threads were not so kind to Mr. Sharper. They were downright mean b/c of the things he said. Maybe just maybe he knew something we didn't.

We were all saying good riddens and that our new infusion of youth though inexperienced would be so talented we would be ok.

Just goes to show why we are fans and not managers ....all that said its time to make CAPERS a fan.

I think JS is right about the Texans communication, which seems to have been interstitial at best. While I think it should be up to the team to perform, the staff decides how to perform and sets the basis for good and bad performance. I am thinking of the Longhorns defensive coordinator who set as a goal keeping opposing teams to 13 points. The benefit was watching the Longhorns defense react to OU's touchdown, and how they really tightened their defense when OU was pushing for 18 points. That the Texans don't seem to know what the coaches require of them is obvious from such tenuous objectives as "less turnovers" and some of the other "insightful" comments Capers gave in the radio interview.

He wasn't outspoken at all. There was one time when he had like one quote and everyone was reading tea leaves and making it say ten different things. He is very quiet and doesn't say much...on or off the field.

yeah im going to miss sharper and i know that seattle has a very nice leadership player on that linebacking core. . he was my favorite player on defense and second was seth payne. i believe he should be one of houstons hall of fame players for our young franchise since he brought us hope in games and brought us great moments. I hope for the best in him

"Dave, he is Texans' football," the senior member of the Seattle Seahawks' neophyte defense said Wednesday of Houston's first draft choice. "When he first got down there, he was 'The Golden Child.' Everyone loved him.

"He had his whole family down at practice every day," Sharper recalled. "It was like his father had stock in the team.

"David could do a little more than anyone else could do, because he was the franchise guy."

Carr acknowledged Wednesday that, yes, Sharper playfully cut into him more deeply than others.

When we *traded* Jamie to Seattle, our defensive ranking DROPPED from 23rd to 28th.

He was THE BEST tackler on our team.

He was the STRONGEST leader on our team.

He wasn't traded because of the 7 million hit to the cap...he was traded because he broke the golden rule and SPOKE OUT PUBLICLY about what the problems are with this team.

Yes, we as fans have been saying these things since day one.

JAMIE had the nerve to SAY it...validating everything WE think...and for THAT, he's gone.

One of the many, Many, MANY mistakes the front office continues to make...

Did I miss something? Sharper was released and signed with Seattle as a free agent. I get the feeling you already know that and were making another point that went over my head though.

He was released. .. he had been told before that though, "to go out and trade himself."

That's what *traded* was about. They tried to trade him before he was released...

The reason he's gone was the point I was trying to make...

and he WAS told to *go trade yourself* before he was released...

all because he opened his mouth...
