Default Suggestions for the coaches...

After thinking and pondering for awhile, here are some suggestions that may allow us to maybe win a few games and help us next season...

1. We need to run some 4 WR sets. Capers talks about Armstrong's hands, Gaffney has produced more than any other WR this season, Mathis is a burner and has shown on kickoff returns he has nice field vision, and AJ, well is AJ. Why can't we line these 4 up at the same time? We could even put a FB or RB in the backfield to help block. Someone would have to get open.

2. On defense, every play, we need to send at least one LB. The 3-4 is meant to disguise your 4th rusher, but you have to send that rusher for the 3-4 to work. Blitzing once or twice a game will not work. Whether it be Wong, Greenwood, Peek, Orr, or at least one of them needs to be sent every play.

3. This season is almost to the point of doing what the Titans were doing in the last half of last season. Throw the ball 60 times a game and every kickoff kick it onsides. I mean hey, what could it hurt? Really? Could we do worse?

4. For the love of God, please cut Riley, now, please. Put Wand or someone else back in at LT. You take a guy who is supposed to be a "project" at LT in Wand out after playing one season. Riley has probably given up more sacks in 4 games than Wand did all of last season. If not, at least put Hodgon in at C and move McKinney and Pitts over to the left one spot.

5. Please let DRob cover the best WR. Our secondary is apparently not good enough to, even when double teaming someone, shut a WR down, ie Chad Johnson. So common sense tells you to put our best CB on the best opposing WR one on one, but I see Coleman and Faggins/Buchanon on Chad Johnson. Faggins hasn't been able to cover anyone this season and I see him out there covering Chad Johnson.

6. What good does it to put our DB's in zone coverage every play? Is this part of the "bend don't break" philosophy? I can honestly count on one hand how many times this season I have seen a DB closer than 8 yards to the line of scrimmage. It's like, "Here, will give you your 8 yard pass, but you won't get the first down."

7. If D' Brickashaw Ferguson or another elite LT is available in the draft when we pick, and you guys trade down or make some type of bonehead move, there could be riots in Houston.

8. The O line has played so horrible this season and the coaches have experimented with all of these different lineups in practice, why are we seeing the same lineup out on the field on Sundays. Once again, what could it hurt?

9. Can we draft or sign at least a solid pass catching/blocking? Ok, you guys went out and got Bruener, not known for his catching skills, so when teams see him come in, most of the time they know what is coming. You cut Miller, good move, I'll give you that, Rivers can't catch a cold. It seems like you guys are just sitting and waiting for Joppru to get healthy. Just look at what Heath Miller did for the Steelers last night and has done for them. Capers wants to run smashmouth football, but it is kind of hard to do without at least a solid all around TE.

This is all for now, you guys feel free to add on, maybe we can sticky this or something and the coaches can take notes from us...

Blitzing once or twice a game will not work. Whether it be Wong, Greenwood, Peek, Orr, or at least one of them needs to be sent every play.

The Steelers use the safety blitz to good effect out of their 3-4. We should try some of that too.

3. This season is almost to the point of doing what the Titans were doing in the last half of last season. Throw the ball 60 times a game and every kickoff kick it onsides. I mean hey, what could it hurt? Really? Could we do worse?

Ouch. We’d at least accomplish setting single game records in sacks.

I like the Wand option better. I can’t wait to see what comes out of the coaches’ meetings today. I wouldn’t be surprised to see no changes in o-line personnel, since they’ve ignored the situation all year already. Disappointed, but not surprised.

This would seem to be an easy to implement change, with lots of upside and little downside. Do it now!

7. If D' Brickashaw Ferguson or another elite LT is available in the draft when we pick, and you guys trade down or make some type of bonehead move, there could be riots in Houston.

One LT won’t solve the line’s problems, but you have to start somewhere. Rookie LTs can have a very rough time of it too. This option may be more of a two year plan, like Gallery playing RT for the Raiders right now.

8. The O line has played so horrible this season and the coaches have experimented with all of these different lineups in practice, why are we seeing the same lineup out on the field on Sundays. Once again, what could it hurt?

I wish they’d be a little more imaginative than shuffling the same players around, and then do it in a game.

I agree with you here, one player is not a fix all, but it would be a helluva start to snag a player like him, we would have our future LT in place.

Default point #5

I really like point #5. I would like to think that common sence has not left Relient Stadium for good. DR is by far our best CB and it is a no brainer to put him on the other teams best WR every play. Especially when our 2nd best CB is Phil B. who cant cover rock with a piece of paper.

For three years I have been campaigning for the Texans to sign a FA big name WR to match up with AJ. Without this element we are simply destined for failure. Also a new O-line but I wont even go there because we all know.

On a different note I got to go to the game Sunday. My buddy scored free tickets from his boss in the upper level sweeps. It was Awsome to go because Im from San Marcos and dont get to houston often. but anyway, I stayed the entire game and watched as people left during the 3rd quarter, and I cant say I blame them. This Team has made it very dificult to be a fan. If there was light at the end of the tunnell,(like last year) it would make it easier to remain optimistic, but there is NOT. And all we have to look forward to is another rebiulding process that will take at least 3 more years before our first winning season.

Riley is on pace to give up 18 sacks this year and 8 penalties. Obviously that is better than any improvement we could have expected on Wand's 12.5 sack 3 penalty 1st year as a starter.

If the coaches and FO start NOW, we could see changes by next season IMO, but all they are doing is sitting on their hands...

That brought a smile to my face. Seeing it explained like that gave me a "Spinal Tap Moment".

I pictured Nigel Tufnel in a Texans shirt and cap saying "How much more sacked could David Carr be? The answer is none. None more sacked"

But the Texans' sack meter goes to 11.

Geez I hope we never actually see it used.

I can't believe I found this post again. I guess the information quoted above answers the little debate that starts at the top of the 3rd page of the following thread:

We're running worse to the left side now too. The trifecta!

Here is the text from the San Antonio Express news article that was published during training camp, August 7, 2005. The bolding is mine. http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/s...n.83c3171.html

At least Riley is meeting his own expectations:

Battle emerging at left tackle
HOUSTON — Incumbent Seth Wand and newcomer Victor Riley are fighting it out for the starting left tackle slot.
"We're both getting the same reps and basically competing for the same spot," said Wand, who is in his third season with the Texans out of Northwest Missouri State.

Riley, Kansas City's top pick in 1998, started at right tackle for New Orleans the past two seasons.

"Both of us are good run-blockers," Riley said. "I've always played right tackle, so it's a big adjustment for me to switch my stance and repeatedly go against (outside linebacker) Antwan (Peek) every day."

The Texans have allowed franchise quarterback David Carr to be sacked 140 times in the organization's first three seasons (an average of 47 a year), including 49 last year and an NFL-record 76 in 2002.

"As an offensive lineman, (allowing) anywhere between 15 to 20 sacks is a good number," Riley said. "It's all about the timing between the O-line, the running backs and the quarterback, and that's what we're working on right now."

There is no difference between 0-16 and 4-12 as far as I'm concerned. I don't look forward to going to the stadium the rest of the season just to see if we can "win a few games." That was fine for the first three years. This year was the time to mature just a bit. I'm not talking playoffs, mind you. Just continue the improvement. Going to the stadium to see if the new kids could win a few games was fine for the first three years. It doesn't cut it now.

I really think Wand got in Capers doghouse, especially after someone reported
on our site that Wand was not suited up Sunday even though he's not injured. And if he doesn't appear with a new group of starters for Sunday in Seattle, I'm gonna be convinced his absense is more than just a performance issue.

If so, I bet David Carr wishes he had a key to that doghouse.

Unless Wand has done something horrible performance wise he should be suited up IMO. I don't like benching players for reasons other than mistakes or bad performance in practice or game situations, unless it is trouble with the law or something along those lines.

You know I had a thought as to why we are not blitzing...

Thinking about our DB play most notably the position opposite Dunta, Since we Seem to be getting Burnt, I think We are masking Buchanons lack of knowing our defensive plybook by offering up strange coverages and the same generic pass rush. It makes sense to me you cant really blitz with confidence if they just air it out to Buchanons assignment.

I just feel Fangio Doesnt feel comfortable leaving the LCB man to man with the teams receiver.

Also my advice for the coaches is
Offense
1. scrap the passing playbook and the season and develop a new quicker hitting west coast style of passing offense, ESPECIALLY if we are keeping the Zone Block scheme. The zone block isnt made for a sit in the pocket and read thru your progressions styke of passing attack. but since that wont happen yet.

2. Leave DD in the backfield more to pick up the blitz and offer carr a little more time to throw.

3. PLEASE get this line to master the art of slide protection so it forms a wall not just 5 guys that pull away from each other.

4. Strike thru the air and score first. we can run with DD but we need to have the lead.

5. Please move the O line, I know I said let hem work their way thru it but that was 14 sacks ago, the line has actually gotten worse since pendry took over. If we allow another 7 sacks this week its trime to play other people and see what we do have as far as our O line goes.. My guess is we get 3 O lineman this year, 1 d lineman and a TE

Defense

1. Line the ends on both sides, Move Johnson, Smith, Iaone, Walker ect. Let them go against the different lineman see if that can help get better penetration.

2. If you are going to blitz try bringing peek on an inside delay blitz, this way he won't be taking on a LT like walter Jones 1 on 1.

3. Put Buchanon and babin back in as starters, the experiment with faggins and orr reveals Babin was doing a better job, maybe have a rotation system put in place there as well so the opposing offense is kept off balance.

4. have Buchanon play against the scrub receiver this week. with no real speed burners in the rec core, maybe Buchanon wont give the huge cuashion and can get some confidence.

5. Set the tone early hit shaun Alexander hard.

Well then he needs to get over it because that is bass ackwards thinking. If you can't trust a guy to cover for the 3 secs it takes to blitz the QB, you sure can't trust a guy to cover for 10 secs.

With Buchanon, 3 sec. looks like an eternity. He just has no idea what he is doin out there he seems to play as if he is goin to have safety help on every play, giving a huge cushion then playing back to the ball or trying to knock the ball free. He needs to work the receiver over more get physical. Oakland has ruined him, in my opinion after watching the oakland Dallas game that D manages to let teams back into the game with poor tackling because they want to cause a turnover.

It may be the backwards way of looking at it but then again, the blitz is a gamble. If they bring the blitz, here are the blitzes I would try.

1. Peek stunting inside of Robaire with Wong taking his outside assignment.

2. Dunta blitzing off the blindside corner in nickel packages.

3. Buchanon Blitzing from the Nickel.

4. Greenwood on a delay up the middle blitz

5. Wong thru center left guard with greenwood showing blitz off RG and center but peeling off at the snap.
