Default Reasons for Optimism

I don't know if anyone else here has read all of the various articles posted lately at the Chronic and the Texans sites, but I have and I'm very happy with what I'm hearing. The post-Palmer era sounds as if its getting off to the right start. Of course there are reasons for the articles to be slanted, especially from the Texans official board writers. But what is most telling for me are the comments from players themselves:

"It's been a nice change as far as the intensity he brings," Carr said Tuesday about Pendry. "You're accountable for everything. Nothing slips through the cracks with him."

"I kind of feel like I'm back in college again."

"The relationship was like two friends," Carr said about Palmer. "Joe's not really friends with anybody. He doesn't care what people think about him."

Andre Johnson: "Practice has changed, period, since he's become the offensive coordinator. And he calls you out when you mess up."

Steve McKinney said “We’re going to call our plays and go out there and run them. Let the chips fall where they may.”

Pendry: "It's always been my belief that the passing game is protection-driven," he said. "It's not receiver-driven or quarterback-driven. So I guess that's what we're working on the most.

"There are a lot of factors when it's protection-driven: depth of the route. Are you at the right spot? Is the quarterback dropping right? Is the back protecting? If you don't get it (pass) off, it doesn't matter how pretty we are."

They (need to) feel comfortable about, 'We know what to do. We know how to do it. We're going to do it, and let's be as physical as we can be.' "

I don't see us going to the Super Bowl because of this small but much-needed change, but I see a lot of things that we've pointed out being addressed. Carr still needs to be coached, keep things simple until you learn to execute them perfectly, be more physical than the other team, etc., etc. It all seems so simple and such common sense, but yet we were not getting any of that with Palmer here.

I've said for about 6 months that I think our schemes and game plan have been the biggest issue with our pass protection. I still don't think the talent is all there, but this unit is better than it is showing.

It's time this team gets some swagger back! They need to start trash mouthing instead of being so humble. Time to show all who is BOSS!

Pendry: "It's always been my belief that the passing game is protection-driven," he said. "It's not receiver-driven or quarterback-driven. So I guess that's what we're working on the most.

I like what I am hearing. It seems the players are buying in. If Pendry is gogin to be identity of this team I am OK with it. Just need somebody to step up and lead this team.

I agree. So far they are SAYING all the right stuff. Just need to see the action out on the field. IMO, we won't really see the full deal for a couple of games, but some on this board will be pissing and moaning all over the place if we lose this weekend. Personally, I want to see HOW they operate. Is there fire and desire. If those are there, then we have enough tallent that if they can get it pulled together they can win. No fire....no win.

For me this will be "enough". If they show that they're interested in winning (even though it ends up as a loss) I'm OK with it.

What do you base these statements on? Who repsects him?

What player has he made better since he's been with the team? The problem with our coaching staff is they have made almost no one, as an individual or as a unit, "better".

You are correct if we score 40+ I would say we all start worshiping Pendry.

well according to what my dad said he heard on the radio, he said that pendry is alot more conservative in the playcalling. hopefully thats not the case, but if a smaller playbook helps david, then by all means do it. with palmer calling plays out there, it was just too predictable. they stacked up the box on first down bc they knew we would run, then on 2nd down they would blitz anticipating pass. david carr needs to work on remaining calm in the pocket, bc alot of the sacks given up this year are not bc of the o-line.

13 sacks in two games; less then 100 (80?) yards rushing per game; I think the O-line still has some problems.

And really we just do not blow people off the line, how many times have you seen us get stuffed in short yardage situations?

Way too many. I remember back during the Run-N-Shoot days when the o-linemen would say how much they love the team to run the ball because they get to hit someone instead of getting hit. Do we have anyone on the line with that kind of attitude?
