Coaches Wanted?

I thought this would be an interesting and heated debate.

Ok say that Dom Capers is let go. Lets throw out some names of coaches who would be available, in other words, no current NFL head Coaches are allowed... Coaches who are deceased, retired, or pursuing a career in broadcasting (i.e Madden, Ditka, or Mora Sr.) or also not allowed. Who would you hire to coach the Houston texans?

I will Start...

Head Coach - Jim Johnson - DC - Philadelphia Eagles - Always loved a defensive guy as a head coach. He brings a good defensive package with him from Philly.

Offensive Coordinator - Rick Dennison - OL Coach - Denver Broncos - What a great offensive system to learn? A great west coast offense with a running game to die for... with 11 years of coaching experience and improvements made every year why not?

Defensive Coordinator - Steve Spagnuolo - Linebackers Coach- Philadelphia Eagles - Great defensive coach that gets the most out of Johnsons system whether its the secondary or the linebackers.

Special Teams - Joe Avazanno

I agree about having a Defensive coach as a head coach. Just look at the Ravens when they went to and won a Super Bowl. They had Trent Dilfer as their QB. They had a stud defense, that held down opposing offenses. The defense had as many TD's as the offense. The defensive got them to the Super Bowl. The coach told Dilfer that the game was yours, NOT to lose.

Head coach - Jerry Gray - Buffalo Bills' Defensive Coordinator. Young coach that will be on many hot lists in the near future.

Defensive Coordinator - Gene Chizik - University of Texas' Defensive Coordinator - Would bring the attacking style that Gray likes. Chizik's units in Auburn have been some of the most dominating in the country. Everybody expects that trend to continue in Austin.

Offensive Coordinator - Sam Wyche - Buffalo Bill's QB Coach - Follows Gray from Buffalo. Wyche was an offensive genius in his time. I think he'd like to get more involved than just coaching QBs.

Special Teams - Bud Foster - Virginia Tech's Defensive Coordinator/Special Teams Coach - Year in and year out the Hokies' Special Teams are known for making play after play. Although it'd be a tough sell to get Foster to go from being a Div-1A DC to an NFL Special Teams coach.

The Ravens are built around their defense, but Billick is an offensive coach. Take a look at his pre-ravens resume, it is all on the O side.

Oh yeah, just look at the bang-up job Wyche has made of turning JP Losman into an NFL-calibre QB. No thanks.

Jim Bates, on the other hand, would suit me fine. The GB defense isn't his fault - personnel-wise that has to be the worst unit in the entire NFL, especially as regards the secondary. Look at his record as DC and then interim head coach in Miami.

Then let him appoint his own co-ordinators and other coaching staff. We've just had three years of an O-con who had a totally different vision to the head coach's. That's quite enough. Also, follow Miami's lead in spending serious money to attract a top-class O-line coach. O-line play is 10% talent and 90% coaching, and if Pendry was any good he'd have got better play out of undrafted rookie scrubs than he has out of our current group.

1984 - 4th
1985 - 1st
1986 - 6th
1987 - 1st
1989 - 2nd
1990 - 11th
1991 - 16th

Funny that you would blame the Packers' defensive problems on their personnel but put Losman's problems on Wyche. Good stuff.

Head Coach - Jeff Fisher...probably not possible to get him away from Bud Adams (even though he is obviously not the smartest owner in the game) but he would be my first choice. Players obviously respect him (former overachieving player), play very hard for the man and he took his team within 2 yards of a Super Bowl championship.

From Fisher's perspective...major upgrade I would think. McNair vs. Adams (no-brainer) and our personnel and salary cap position vs the Titans. I would think he would prefer the hand dealt to him by the Texans.

Finally, not the reason you do it but I must admit as and old Luv ya Blue fan, it would be fun to stick it to Bud and then beat him like a red headed step child twice a year with his old coach.

As far as the other coaches, excellent post suggestions but anyone that Fisher would pick would be fine with me.

I agree with all that, plus he knows how to utilize a TE in his offense. The one thing that sticks out to me is how Fisher managed to make a 1-15 team turn to a 8-8 team in one year, and within two years get to the Super Bowl. Obviously it is because his teams buy into him as a head coach.

The other guy I was thinking of would be Herm Edwards from NYJ. We all complain about how Capers plays not to lose well "Hello, you play to win the game" Herm Edwards would frustrate us at times but it wont be because he's not trying to win.

Yeah, people usually think of Fisher as a "defensive coach" ...Buddy Ryan disciple etc... but he knows how to get it done on the other side of the ball as well. TE on LB mismatches, downhill running and how to manage a kid from a small school with a big arm at the QB position. I would love to see what he could get out of our guys on both sides of the ball.

And I agree that Herm Edwards would definately be an upgrade over what we have.

Head Coach- Jimmy Johnson, Jeff Fisher, Fisher is King Ding-a-ling in Tenn. So I doubt we could get him seriously!

OC- Who ever, as long as he's never worked with Capers

Defensive Coaches seem to have more longstanding success.

While more offensive Coaches seem to be a flash in the pan and make it to the playoffs less often. There are exceptions to the rule, But I am a defensive minded person and place more importance on stopping the opposition rather than outscoring them.

Yes If Jim Johnson came here I would love to see us switch to a 4 - 3 Heck I would love to see that period even though with our short team history we definitely lack the personnel and depth to pull it off, I think fundamentally speaking the 4-3 is a better defense. The 3-4 is just en vogue because of the patriots. So far though it seems to be the 4-3 defenses this year that are dominating, Tampa, Indy, KC, Cincy (I cant recall if they run a 4-3 or not) I assume they this could be because with so many teams transitioning to the 3-4 its no longer a rare defense to go up against. So with more practice and gameplanning against it the less effective it becomes. Plus i like the 4 guys go get the ballcarrier vs. you 3 tie up blockers so one guy can come in free. approach. But again thats my opinion (I even did my High school graduation thesis paper on the 4-3 defense and how it revolutionized the game of football) so I may be a tad Biased.

So lets see we have Jerry Gray, And Jim Johnson... who else out there (NO CURRENT NFL COACHES)
