Default If you ran the offense...

how would you like to see the Texans offense perform? A vertical passing game like oaklands?? Smash mouth football like the Steelers? I good mix like the Pats? A lot of motion like KC and St. Louis??

If I took over right now it would be very simple for the next several weeks. I would also evaluate my talent a great deal more.

The first step would be a lot of max protect passing schemes. I would tell Carr that I'm going to protect him and actually do it. From the max protect schemes (2 TE's, 1 WR, FB, HB) I would practice play action. I would use Wells equal to Moran to keep the defense guessing about run or pass. I would drill all of my backs on blocking until they could successfully block my best LB consistently. The backs would function as receivers coming from the backfield. My tight ends would get the ball more too. The back field would be either a regular, weak or strong I formation, or pro set. I would get a lot of practice time for my backs and TE's on catching the ball and running good routes.

I would also have my WR's practice blocking as well. I would let them know if they have a problem with blocking they will be benched.

It would be a very boring and simple offense, but it would work. I would dink and dunk down the field with short gains and good runs.

I would sit down with Carr and tell him that he will no longer be running for his life as we will always have six or more blockers for him. I'm sure it would cost the Texans as couple of games, but Carr wouldn't be getting killed and his confidence would come back.

Eventually I would open the offense up some with three WR's, but not for a couple of weeks at least. It would be all about ball control, confidence and blocking for at least two games.

There's nothing boring about getting first downs and scoring touchdowns. I dont care if it's 3 yards at a time, if it gets us in the endzone I'll be a happy camper.

I want to see a balanced run/pass offense that is not predictable. I'd like to see more intermediate passes in the offense. Other than that, I don't care about the specific scheme.

If I ran the offense it would be a mix of pass and run with max protection on pass plays. I would also try some "trick" plays to keep teams on their toes.

I think that the main problem we had with our offense was a conflicting vission of how it should be ran. Recievers and QB's can still put up big numbers in a smash mouth run oriented offense. We need to be on the same page and then we will see what kind of potential we have to work with.

I would put in a couple of plays that are new. Something not seen on a previous game film.

Change of pace RB, Morency.

Dump passes, screens, more passes to TE's bootlegs, option play.

Our offense is so damn predictible, do something different. Surprise the Def.

Play Armstrong more, while AJ is double teamed.

Blitz the hell out of our defense!!!

so you wouldnt change anything?

max protect is all we're doing and it's yet to work. the worst thing you can do is sit and wait on the blitz, the only way to beat it is to throw right at it. hiding in max protect means you're playing the opponent's game. i'd sit in a 3-wide set for 75% of the game, mixing between TE & FB, with AJ, Armstrong, & Gaffney starting. only every 4th or so pass play someone goes more than 25 yards down the field and only 3 or 4 deep tries a game. it stays simple with 10-15 yard curls and slants. i'd try to spread the defense horizontally more than anything and push DD through the middle. K.I.S.S. ... move the chains, get in a rhythm early, and move the offense quickly. a sustained drive is going to eat up clock, it doesnt matter if it's a reception or a run.

defense switches to a 4-3.

I definately would go with more 3 and 4 wide reciever sets. This weekend we saw a few more of those plays than we did in week 1 and they were fairly successful. What obviously was not working was the 2 and 3 tight end sets because the Steelers put nearly everyone in the box. The only time that worked was when we did a play action. Carr has a strong arm, and hopefully mathis will be back after the bye. That means we can have AJ, Mathis and Armstong out on 3 reciever sets. AJ is just AJ, while mathis and stretch the field and Armstrong has glue for hands, even over the middle. I think opening up the pass will take people out of the box, and Davis may find a few running lanes. I noticed one play in particular where we had 4 recievers and DD as the lone back, and we handed off for around 8 yards, simply because they couldn't have everyone near the line. Carr has the arm to be a good pass happy quarterback, if he can avoid being chased around the backfield. The max protect schemes haven't been working because the tight ends and Davis aren't blocking very well. If that doesn't work, get them off the field and put players on the field who help spread out the defense. Also, look around the league and see if there is any player at all who could play tight end for us, but there probably aren't many out there. Basically spread it out, and maybe throw some motion in there to help Carr see how the defense reacts and maybe figure out what kind of package they are playing. We do not have the players for a smash mouth type of game, but I think we have better guys for a west coast type of game.

For starters, I would tell Carr to stop playing like he's Vick out there. It's good to scramble at certain times, but in Game 1 and 2, it looked like 1/2 of those attempts were just unnecessary...especially the times where he just ran out of bounds yesterday.

I'm hoping that after looking at film that the new Texans OC will see the value in more spread offense-like sets(4 or 5 WR sets). But I have a feeling that Pendry will usher in the new era- of SnoreBall to the Texans offense.

Man, I can't wait for the bye week to pass. I'm just itching to start the "Fire Capers" thread.

I would have installed the run-n-shoot, or some form of it, from day one. I'd be very aggressive with the pass and would not try to sit on a lead, but rather keep adding to it until the final seconds tick off in the 4th quarter.

For Starters.......

Simplify the blocking scheme. We were missing basic blitz pick-ups.

More 3 and 4 wide out sets (Goal-Line and '4th and Inches' situations are the only time you'd see 2 and 3 TE's). More recievers in motion (not just A.Johnson when everyone in the world knows Im going to throw to him). Go deep more....atleast, act like we can go deep to open up the 10-20 yard passing routes...which can open up the run a little more. There's no way a Safety should be as nosey around the line as Polamonu was...and, I not burn him, atleast, once.

Throw on 1st down more than "none".

Run drills so D.Carr can learn to keep his head up....and, throw the ball away. If he did it earlier in his career...it's gone now.
