NOTES: The Texans completed their first round of cuts Tuesday by releasing fullback Jarrod Baxter and tackle Garrick Jones. They also placed tight end Bennie Joppru on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Im happy to see that baxter is gone. He hasnt done much for us...I never really payed any attention to Jones and as for Joppru to bad he cant be healthy.

This almost solidifies that Jonathan Wells makes the roster as a FB.

I guess that means Wells makes the team with Baxter being cut. Vinny was wrong afterall. Just messing with you Vinny, you're usually right on.

He was one of the top FB prospects coming out of college. Started the first year for the Texans, but eventually got beat out by Norris.

PUP list looks to be only a formality, I expect him to be on IR before long. They must think pretty highly of him when healthy for them to stick it out like this.

He didnt really get beat out. Remember he broke the bone in his foot at the Dallas game our second season and missed the entire season and by then Norris had established himself.

Yeah i was going to say that, he got hurt and lost his job. But he's had time to impress the coaches and obviously hasn't since being back from injury.

I am torn on this one. While a large part of health is luck, a good part of being a player is being able to play. Joppru has been unable to play for three years now. 2nd round choice or not even the most compassionate person has a point where it is best to move on.

He must be a really good TE when healthy for the Texans to keep him for so long. Let's hope it's true and BJ comes back next season to make solid contributions.

Not cutting Joppru now is all about the cap. He still carries over $800K in signing bonus over the next 2 years.

It doesn't cost anything to keep Joppru for another year and see if he can get through a mini camp. As long as the Texans don't count on a contribution from Joppru as I think they did coming into this offseason.

What's the cap 85M....math not my strong suit but that is less than 1%. 800,000 sounds a lot but, it is not really. I just watched the Cowboys cut Jacob Rogers who is mid 2nd rounder from 2004, who could not stay healthy.

I have been developing a theory that Texans management hates to admitting to mistakes and hides this under the guise of patience. Still some holes in the thought and waiting to see how they handle certain players over the next 10 days or so.

That's a completely different situation in that Parcells felt that Rogers could at least try to play with the injury. Rogers opted for surgery & Parcells sent a message to the rest of the team that he'll decide whether you're healthy enough to play.

No one on the Texans believe that Joppru could play this season with torn ligaments. My point is that there's no good reason to cut Joppru now, except to "own up". The mistake the Texans made was in not coming up with a TE this offseason, not by drafting Bennie in the 1st place. Who could have known he would be injured 3 years in a row? Hollings you can point to as a mistake because he came in as injured goods and never got his game back. Joppru was just freaky bad luck. If it hurts nothing to keep him on injured reserve for another year, why not bring him back?

IMO, they have been beyond fair with Joppru. If I were another player I am wondering about getting cut for poor performance and another guy who can't stay healthy (unlucky or not) keeps getting paychecks. Unfair to the healthy player after a point. It seems a little cold, but thank the guy for his hard work, injury settle and allow him to move foward.

Hollings is a player i am waiting to see how they handle before I start making the generalization from above. Weary falls in to that category also. Don't feel like listing, but the 2nd and 3rd rounds have not been too kind to the Texans.

My other problem is this...Let's assume he was going to have a solid career pre-injury. We now have a guy that will not have played in any real football since January 2003 in September 2006. Not many players have taken three and half years off and been successful. The number lowers when you talk about players who have been injuried for most of that time. Joppru has went from a guy you expected to be entering his prime in 2006 to a guy that you are hoping stay healthy enough to play in pre-season games (much less real). Personally, I would not criticize the Texans for giving up on Joppru too soon. If he turns into a really good NFL TE at any point, whatever team benefits is now lucky, not smart.

His signing bonus went into his bank account in 2003.

The accounting proration (approx 400k/yr) is on the cap this year and next, in addition to his base of 380k this year and 460k next year if he's still around.

It would count as much on the cap to keep him as to cut him this season, unless they split the dead money over two years which they would be allowed based on the timing of the cut.

There's really no reason to cut him, but they are rolling coins to pay for Carr's extension. Based on his history there's no reason to believe he will ever make it out of training camp but enigmatic as he is, he'll probably get one last chance next year.
