I honestly think this might be a move to get Clarett onto the practice squad, however if it is, I am surprised he was not just placed on the squad directly. Perhaps its a cost saving manuever.

We will see, but its going to be awfully hard to get all of those incentives when you dont play on Sunday.

You can just look back at his career from High School and instead of working hard and staying coachable, he bought into his hype and figured that somehow things would work out just because it was so 'obvious' to everyone around him he was destined for the NFL. When he signed I didn't think he screwed up when he opted for money on speculation instead of traditional guaranteed money but looking back he wins the Mensa of the year award. A fool and his money are soon parted....even potential money.

I think it was a noble idea to want to go out there and "earn his paycheck". I have absolutly no problem with that. Quite frankly I wish more players would play for such contracts.

Did Clarrett overestimate his ability: it would appear so. However, I think he should have negotiated a higher base salalry that still had reachable incentives for him. I am not advocating the Ricky Williams idea of "reachable goals". If memory served all he had to do was average 1600 yds a season behind the permeable Saints OLine.

Well I bet Clarett is wishing he had that guaranteed signing bonus now, but that's his and his agent's fault. But I think the Broncos are foolish to waste a 3rd round selection on Clarett because now you can look back and say, we kept these 6th and 7th rounders, we could have upgraded that position with that 3rd rounder. I'm sure somebody will pick up Clarett, but like you guys said, it could be practice squad wherever he ends up.

Clarett first gambled that he could beat the NFL in court after applying despite not being three years out of high school. The case failed and Clarett had to sit out and wait until the 2005 season to get his chance to turn pro.

Clarett's second gamble was on his contract. He felt he was a first-round choice and wanted a contract similar to what a first-rounder would receive. To accomplish that, he tried to do get that contract with incentives. The four-year deal he pushed for included no signing bonus.

The Broncos were willing to give him a $410,000 signing bonus, but Clarett opted to push that money into workout bonuses in 2006 through 2008. Clarett agreed to only a $230,000 base salary in 2005. If he put up good numbers, Clarett had the opportunity to make $7 million over the four years of his contract.
