This is something I've been wanting to see for a long, long time. The commentators can shut up for all I care and on the radio, I just want the facts. The best football games I ever watched were many years ago when NBC did an experiment with nobody in the booth. They just showed the game and had the graphic on the screen telling you what down it was and how many yards to go.
It was so much better than every other broadcast I've ever seen that it makes me sad to think that it's probably never going to happen again.

I don't wanna come off as an *******, but announcers don't bother me and last I checked every TV I have ever owned or watched has a mute button, if you don't like what you hear, you should really consider using it.

The Sportscenter catch phrases irritate me more. It's almost like a prerequisite that every person on the show have a catch phrase to utter while showing highlights. Some of them are good, but most of them stink. Okay I'll admit I'm a bit partial to the "Say Ello To My Lil Friend" one, but thats just cause I'm a Scarface fan.
I will admit that the announcers do talk too much. I don't need to know what's coming up on 60 minutes after the game. I don't need to hear you argue back and forth about whether or not it was enough for the first down. I have eyes. |

Problem with the mute button is you miss the sounds of the game. The fans cheering/booing, the players crashing together.

The catch phrases usually don't bother me unless they're a little too weird or different, or they're being used too much. I'm guessing that the tv producers are putting pressure on the announcers to be more interesting and appeal to younger people, that's why they go overboard.

Madden there is an irritation waiting to happen. He is the second reason i wont watch Monday Night Football. The other is seeing the same teams 3 times a year and never seeing the Texans on it...

I dont mind commentators in the booth calling the game, but what I do hate is all the filler. They have to be talking all the time. if there is 5 seconds between talking, someone gets in trouble. They cant just stop talking while nothing is going on, on the field. Then the special interest pieces just drive me crazy. Going to the sideline to talk to someone I dont care about, or cutting to a clip about whatever.
I would love a commentator option, on/off.

I really wanted to see the highlight clips and some of the Hall of Fame game, but they just wouldn't shut up. Besides the game being extremely boring, they sure didn't help by interviewing people such as Dan Marino's son. |

hah.. selectable commentators..that would be great.
If they would give me the option of turning off the commentators.. that would be great. it would be even better if they would give you the option to turn it to "realism mode" where the stadium sounds are amplified a bit..and you can just listen to the guy speaking over the loud speaker. That would be enough for me. Turn the lights off and turn on the surround sound. |

I remember watching a Rockets game one time last season when the mikes were accidentally turned off for a few minutes, so all that was on was the sounds of the game. I thought it was interesting to hear what the players and coaches said. Even though I usually like listening to the guys who announce the Rockets games, I was a little disappointed when they came back on.

the thing that gets me about the commentators and drives me crazy is when they say the obvious. like, " they're gonna need to get alot more pass rush if they hope to win the game" or " Carr's gonna need more time to throw the ball if they're gonna get anywhere". and i'm sitting there saying "No **** Sherlock".

does this thread have anything to do with the fact that the cfl announcers went on strike and it ends up the the ratings went up 10%?

That's not exactly what I call a good solution AndreJ. I said I don't like listening to the announcers, I never said I didn't like hearing the sounds of the game. Who knows, as TV gets more and more "feature rich" maybe someday they'll have a selective mute button allowing you to turn off the talking heads if you don't like the team they have in the booth that week.

What I wish I could turn off is all of the distracting graphic animations and sound effects. Put the score in the upper corner small enough not to get in the way, big enough that I can read it and leave me the hell alone. Remember when the broadcasts didn't look like a video game with all of the crap on the screen?

Yeah, I definately am tired of announcers, I was watching the Falcons/Jaguars game and Byron Leftwich got hurt for a play and he said, "for this, Hallmark doesn't have a card", I didn't even get the joke so that made it even worse..

There are several things that bug me about announcers and I have remarked on them before, but here it goes again.
1. "There's no love loss between these two teams." What the hell does that mean? 2. Using a single player to describe several players. ie. "You have your Brett Favres, your Tom Bradys and your Peyton Mannings." 3. The tired, overused phrase "Class Act" ie. "Coach Dandy is a class act." This term is only used in sports. No one ever says a doctor is a class act.
