Default Is Charlie Anderson a better fit than Peek?

I realize that Anderson has been playing against second & third teamers, but he seems to always be in the right position at the right time.

While Peek may be a more gifted athlete, Anderson seems to be the smarter player. What good does all the athleticism in the world do, if you don't have the football IQ to go with It?

Peek seemed like that too when he was going against second and third teamers in the preseason. Last year it was all about all the intensity and speed that Peek brought to the defense, now it's the intelligence of Anderson?

I trust that the coaches will put the best linebacker into the spot. If Anderson can beat Peek out of the job then he's the guy.

This is what everyone said last year about Peek. He wasn't in often, but when he was, he was in the right spot.

Now that Peek is in every play, he's not going to be making huge impact plays every down.

I think with time he's going to do well for us.

Actually, Peek was only in the right place on blitzes. Anderson, on the other hand, has been in the right place for running plays, pass coverages, & blitzing assignments (albeit, his pass rush isn't as fierce as Peeks). He just seems to be more in control of his game than Peek is.

Unbelieveable. First yall cant wait to get Peek on the field for more than 5 plays a game. And now that you get that, you wan Anderson.

Listen, Anderson had a great game...vs the 2nd, and 3rd team offense. Put him up against the likes of Gallery and Sims, and you get a clue.

I absolutely agree. I was finally ale to watch a game here in preseason, and was shocked at how Peek could not read the O-line and adjust. He has one great speed, but he was getting killed by the O-line sucking up on those runs.

the right guy will get the job. Im not worried about it. Peek is not considered "a lock" like Wong and Babin were considered locks at OLB last year. If Anderson plays better..he will get the start.

I like what ive seen of Anderson too though..and would not be disappointed to see either one of these two out there starting for us.

We gotta remember that Peek, unlike Babin, is not a first round pick, he's a
third rounder so the Texans wouldn't be concerned about the issue of using
a "real" high pick who didn't turn out to be an every down starter. Anderson
on the other hand, would have to be rated atleast as big a find as DD if he
could wrest the startling weakside OLB from Peek - he was only a 6th round
pick ! Even if he was going against backups he played real well last night and
once again, unlike Peek, he's not in his third but only second year. But Peek
is in no way shape or form a bust or even potential bust, he's still our top
pass rusher and a tremendous ST player.

I was wondering how long until this thread appeared this year. Every year it seems we have one of these "need certain player to play more'" thread. Last it was Peek, this looks like it is Peek's Backup.

Anderson is in the situation Peek was in last year. Don't be suprised if Anderson comes in this year and makes impact plays for us like Peek did. We need good back ups which is a rarity these days. I tell you what though, aside from Anderson, Evans is pretty darn good.

First off, I wasn't one of those that was screaming for Peek to start. I think he has the potential to be a great pass rushing player, but there's more to the game than just third & long.

Can Peek develop into a great (all around) player? Yes. Is he the starter? Yes. Can he lose the starting role? Yes, if he & Anderson keep playing the way they have been.

Peek does look lost out there, while Anderson seems to be a more natural/instinctive player. I want the best players out there. If Peek is that guy, then he gets my full support. But, even a blind man can see that Anderson has been playing better.

If you'll re-read my original post, I made the observation that Anderson is in the right place at the right time. Meaning, that he knows his assignment & fills his role.

As fast as this game is at the NFL level, even the most gifted athlete can't always recover from being out of position. At the very minimum, he's going to give up an extra 5+ yards before he makes the play. A very important element of the defensive game is position & containment.

If you watched last night's game, then you saw Shantee Orr move in & give up his containment on the left side on one play in the 3rd quarter, that allowed Tuiasosopo to run outside for 7 yards to the Houston 28. Fortunately, we later picked him off, but in a tight game, they were in FG range & that could've been a huge play.

Knowing your assignment & playing it is the difference between the playoffs & an early vacation.

Peek is the better athlete hands down, but is he the smarter athlete?

Peek may never be more than a situational pass rusher. Saturday's game didn't help him much imo. The coaches really like Anderson and he may end up the long term starter (one of these days...perhaps not now) at ROLB if Peek can't find a way to contain the edge while giving us some pass rushing ability. This is a critical year for Peek. I don't think he has shown too well so far.

I'm looking forward to Peek being on the field fulltime but am wondering if he can maintain his intensity. At times last season he'd come into the game all pumped up against lineman that may have been a bit winded. Reminds me of a closer making the switch to a starter. Does he have the stuff to get outs for more than 1 inning? If that analogy makes sense....

I say it'll be both and they'll rotate out to keep the defense fresh and fast. Isn't that the reason we also got TJ? I want to say that's what I read a while back was getting some quality depth on defense to give players a breather and keep the pressure on.

I think it's an excellent analogy. If you watch the TC videos they have online or if you have been to any of them, whenever there is a drill running that Peek is involved in he goes all out and when his drill is done he sprints back to the group for his next drill.

This might sound a little lame but watching him in TC reminds me of the movie Rudy. To me Peek is 100% heart and is going to give it all he's got on every down. I think his offseason conditioning will help him keep stride throughout the whole game.

just MHO

I must say, our LB corp has the most "potential" of any in the AFC, if not the entire league. That is primarily due to Capers (and the staff he hired). Look at his previous squads. I mean...we CUT several guys that are doing GREAT on other teams. Foley for one. I know I said this last year...but one of my favorite guys that I feel has pro-bowl potential if given the chance is SHANTEE ORR.
The few opportunities he's had, he's made the most of them. Now, I haven't watched his special teams play, so I don't know about that. But while on D...he's in all the right places and definitely wraps up well.

Now if only we had that kind of depth on the O-line! :brickwall

Heck...if only we had ANY depth on the O-line.
