Default Hang in there Seminoles !

"Determined to preserve "Seminoles" as a nickname and Chief Osceola as a mascot, FSU's board of trustees authorized an appeal and positioned the school for a legal challenge in the event it's denied. Rep. Tom Feeney, R-Fla., decrying what he called "political correctness run amuck," threatened to take the fight to Congress."

Be interesting to know how Texans & former FSU players TJ & reserve OL
Milford Brown feel about this.

Best article I've read on this subject.

I wonder if the NCAA would be willing to give all the millions they've made off these "hostile or abusive" team names to some of the Indian territories around the country.

Mascot debates have always been stupid IMO. By definition a mascot is something which its supporters are proud of or cherish. How that is twisted into an attempt to be demeaning to the mascot is beyond me.

Great article.

Talk truly is cheap. If the NCAA is really worried about the offending mascots/logos then they should not be making money from them.

NCAA is a synonym for hypocrisy, no doubt. But if schools are really "honoring" these tribes, maybe a honorarium to them from the sales of tickets, jerseys, & souvenirs would be in order.

Not a bad idea at first blush, but the mechanics are a nightmare. Do the Redskins and Braves contribute to all tribes? Do the Seminoles pay only the Florida Seminoles who approve of them, or also the Oklahoma Seminoles who do not?

The Celtics and the Fighting Irish need to pay up too. I know some willing Irishmen who need some change.

I read something about FSU wanting to get approval from the local tribes that they "represent" instead of all tribes.

The ones that I think need to go.

Redskins.
Savages.

I think Redskins is to much of a racial slur to defend.

I think the fighting irish is ok. They are not saying drunken irish.

Context matters and the context for this whole discussion is school mascots. You don't pick things you are slurring as a mascot. You pick things to hold up for respect because they have some quality you admire. By its nature a mascot is not a slur.

FSU has the support from the local Seminoles. The costume that is worn by their mascot that rides out on the horse is made by the local tribesmen.

But these little facts get ignored even when it's a small minority that is offended.

Best line from the article:

Quote:
I just know this: Each person chooses to be offended.

What gets me is that Florida State has the blessing of the Seminole Tribe of Florida. The tribe is NOT offended!!!

It's all the other thought-police that want to sanitize the world of anything that might/could/possibly be considered "offensive" by those without objective analyzation abilities.

Taking hyper-sensitivity to all new levels is PETA, who wants to ban all animal mascots and create numbers for all the schools!! Can you imagine, the University of Texas Eighty-Threes?!? :

Double Barrel, it seems like every issue for you gets tied back to PETA. That is kind of funny.

"The tribe officially sanctions FSU's use of Seminoles as a nickname and Chief Osceola as a mascot. Max Osceola, the chief and general council president of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, said Tuesday that it was an "honor" to be associated with FSU.
The NCAA granted a waiver in the first challenge to a new policy, removing FSU from a list of colleges whose sports teams, it said, use "hostile or abusive" Native American names and imagery."
