I'm actually a little surprised, but glad to hear the news. Looks like the
Texans are pretty confidant in Kailee's conversion and ability to get the job done playing backer from the inside. |

Wong's an all around versatile linebacker. He can play inside or outside, has good speed and size.
Good to hear we got him out of the way. One less thing to worry about come February. |

Has he been given a signing bonus? Also what are the base salaries for the other three years (2006-09)?

sounds like they are paying a lot of money the first season and then decelerating the contract. that would be smart since we got a little extra money this year. also might mean that we are not going to get any outside ol help.

How does wong look at ILB? Because based on his production at OLB, 7 million seems a like high. But last year he did show that he won't be a liability in coverage.

I like the idea of a decelerated contract for a player on our 4th year team. I don't follow the money trail so much, but this looks good to me.

great news! very comparable to Greenwoods contract I think that both are getting 7 million signing bonus with each's numbers flip floping over the next 4 years so that the cap hit is equal each year for the ILB position. a well planned buisness move

From ESPN :
The new five-year contract created by the extension is worth $17.65 million and Wong will earn $7 million this season. Wong was entering the final season of his original contract with the Texans. 7 Mil. up front, 10 Mil. over the next 5 years. Not a bad deal. 2 Mil a year before he retires or is released. Lock him up before he was due to hit free agency next year. |

when you think about this it makes sense...last year every interview with babin had something about him following wong...wong is our defensive leader and he is the one guy the coaches seem to like the most...i'm happy for wong...the extension also shows that the coaches and casserly believe he has already made the transition to ILB and is going to be good

For someone so sure of Babin and Peek's weaknesses, I find it strange that you don't know about Wong's cover skills. He's been starting for this team for three years. Greenwood has very good cover skills. Wong has better cover skills than either Sharper or Foreman had. This LB corp is going to be vastly superior to the previous one. By midseason, barring significant injuries, we're going to have a top 10 defense, IMO. |

With the disclaimer assuming that there is no serious injuries, I'm fairly confidant that by the end of the year Wong, Greenwood, & Babin will still be starting. So if there is an odd man out, it's gonna be the Peek. He's our best pass rusher, entertaining and exciting to watch but then theres the liabilty side of the balance sheet: dubious ability playing the run and immature, volatile personal behavior. But with Wong resigning, Peek is the one player of the backer foursome Cass & Co don't have much of an investment with and
they have some decent reserves with Anderson & Pettaway standing in the wings. The D has the chance to really impress this year. |

If Peek has matured and can play good positional footbal, I really think this LB corp will be very good and that means our defense will be a good one.

FWIW--Wong was just on 610 am and says Babin has made a big improvement this off-season and Peek has made a huge one.

By locking Wong up for a while, the Texans also made it that much more clear we will probably go with a OT and a TE in the early rounds of next years draft. I had thought they may let Wong go and grab on of the talented LBs, but that is out the window now. Frankly that is fine by me too. The little info i have gathered is that LOT and TE are the biggest sore spots for us. Glad to see Wong will be around a while...hope he does well.

I like the deal. After cutting two starting backers, I think this sends a positive message that good players such as Wong & DD will be rewarded with good deals. I'm not certain Wong will be worth $7 million in 05, but I've been wong before. Sorrry! Simply could not past that up.

The only reason his salary seems a little jacked up right now is that we have the ability to absord it this year. That way we have more room for on the cap for future acquisitions when we might be looking for that short term player to get us over the top.
