Interesting to see TE as one of the toughest positions to learn in this scheme. I reckon they have a lot of option routes that depend on defensive alignment?

Probably...And blocking too....

Those guys will likely play all over the field...Out wide...Slot...Wing...On the line...

Maybe in the backfield too...I could see that...

They'll probably have a lot of different responsibilities and reads to make...

Love hearing that Kareem is playing in the slot some too.

I think he can thrive inside when we add more DB's because he's a physical player and he is very, very good defending shorter type routes.

I'm excited to see this staff actually put players in positions to see their skills shine through.

From an August 2013 article re. O'brien and his TE heavy-use offense at Penn State:

Quote:
The advent of spread offense era has seen the rise of the "joker" player. In other words, they are movable chess pieces who can be used at multiple positions around the offensive formation. We typically think of them as small, fast and explosive -- Percy Harvin, Tavon Austin, Randall Cobb, Dexter McCluster and, if all goes as planned for Ohio State's touted freshman this season, perhaps Dontre Wilson. These players are good with the ball in space and can be moved around to draw matchups with slower defenders, or even act as decoys.

But the last decade has also seen the rise or a new kind of movable chess piece: big, athletic tight ends. Just as NBA offenses have become free-flowing with more ambiguous positions, football offenses have followed suit, making good tight ends among the most valuable assets a team can have, with the obvious advantage being a basic matchup problem: Generally speaking, linebackers are too slow and defensive backs are too small to adequately defend the new breed of athletes at the position.

At its core, the basic skills of the tight end remain the same, which is why, in an interview at Penn State media day, tight ends coach John Strollo downplayed the evolution of coaching the position. It was about catching and blocking 40 years ago, and it's about catching and blocking now, and the position is more involved in the passing game because everyone is passing more. This is all true, of course. And it's Strollo's job to deal with the technical details of blocking, catching and route running.

But, like any play-caller, it's O'Brien's job to think about the big picture and use the field as his own personal chessboard, trying to create advantageous situations with a now-limited personnel supply.

After the NFL success of modern tight ends like Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates -- great athletes who also played basketball -- in the last 10 to 15 years, coaches like O'Brien realized that few players can create mismatches like 21st-century tight ends who have made an evolutionary leap forward as receiving threats. It changed the way the New England Patriots played offense, and, last year, it immediately changed Penn State's offense. The position may still be about blocking and catching, but it also requires adaptability. Whereas multi-tight end formations used to be power formations (which they still can be, especially at Wisconsin), now they're another way to spread the field and confuse defenses.

"It's really just moving around," Penn State tight end Kyle Carter said. "We have a lot of motion. [O'Brien] just puts in a lot of different situations. Sometime we'll be out wide, sometimes in the slot, sometimes at running back, sometimes at fullback, sometimes on the line -- a regular tight end. So the defense can't really pinpoint where you're going to be at."

That's one part of it. The other part is the hurry-up, which O'Brien also brought from New England. The goal is to make the defense uncomfortable, catch them with the wrong personnel and then keep that personnel on the field by snapping the ball quickly. Combine that with 6-foot-5, 250-pound players who can line up anywhere, and the defense faces a nightmare trying to keep up and stay focused.

Nix has been at practice, just not practicing. A number of players work on a side field. (The kind of work that is more intense than my typical workouts, which are pretty intense for normal people workouts). Then they ice anything that they should ice.

So after they do work on a side field, they join their position groups to get mental reps.

The fact that we hand picked Fiedo so early in the draft shows how important this position is. I can't wait to see how we use our big 3 TEs. Probably the most talented unit on the team. Very exciting!

I was really excited that the Texans drafted Fiedorowicz to compete at TE. How has he looked in general and in comparison to the other guys at the position?

Also, curious who appear to be the leader (vocal or otherwise) in the various units?

It's early but he looks beastly big. The size TE that the Kubiak Texans never really utilized. The Kubiak sort of fungible model of TE was more of the Broncos Shannon Sharpe idea--tight end as sort of a large WR or smallish TE. Which works well for some match ups, not so well for others. I don't think it is fair to put Gronk on Fiedorowicz, but the big body style I think is the future way they want to go, from a game plan flexibility standpoint.

As far as leadership, I think one of the issues that the Texans had in recent years was jettisoning leaders and not being able to replace them with true leaders. They attempted to replace DeMeco Ryans with a bunch of randoms, with the hope that Cushing could stay healthy. That plan didn't work. Cap was a captain for a reason--a very difficult guy to replace from a leadership perspective.

It's weird when your Olinemen are part of your strongest leaders for a offense, but they were never really able to replace Eric Winston, both from a leadership and playing perspective.

And when you have no incumbent QB, it has to create some sort of leadership void that journeyman, backups, rookie have a hard time filling.

I asked O'Brien about this, and he took exception to the idea that it may be a challenge to develop leaders for a team that doesn't have an incumbent quarterback or a long time player like a Ray Lewis. (both things I mentioned in my question). His response to me on who he sees as leaders?

“I would say we have pretty good leadership on this football team on both sides of the ball. On special teams, Shane Lechler. Defensively: J.J. Watt, Brian Cushing, Brooks Reed, Johnathan Joseph, Kareem Jackson, (D.J.) Swearinger. Offensively: Duane Brown, Chris Myers, (Arian) Foster. I think the quarterbacks—the three that have been here—have shown good leadership ability. Obviously, Andre Johnson when he decides to come back, I think we have good leadership on this football team.”

Out of his list, I think the only traditional sorts of leaders are Shane Lechler, J.J. Watt, and Chris Myers. Guys who combine good play, experience, and verbal direction. It's hard to be a leader as quarterback when you don't know whether you are going start or even make the team. The rest of the players he mentioned are some a mix of great players, good players, and hmmm players who are vets. Decent locker room guys, but not guys I'd confuse with all time NFL great leaders.

And Andre Johnson, who is a great player of the lead by example sort, isn't buying in right now. So, that's hard position to lead from.

Was interesting he mentioned 2nd year player, D.J. Swearinger, because though he has a lot of confidence that you need to have to play that position well, his play often didn't back up his words last year, and he was hit with some ungood penalties.

O'Brien may have had to answer the question the way he did to support his guys publicly and to build them up, but I see a huge leadership void for this team. A lot of guys who are great locker room guys, hard workers etc, but not a lot of been there, done that, we got this. Perhaps some more true leaders will emerge, but this is a team that is going to have to develop leadership and true confidence (not just talk confidence).
