Default 2 Big Name Texans' Cuts on MOnday?

If my understanding is correct, the beginning of the free agency period tomorrow afternoon is also the earliest a player can be cut and designated as a June 1st cut. I assume that is why AJ hasn't been cut yet (not because they are holding out for a trade)... Given the front-loading of JJ Watt's contract and Kareem Jackson's, I think it is likely they intend to create more 2015 room and may do so by designating someone else as a June 1 Cut-

Andre Johnson as a June 1st cut saves an additional $3.6 million for 2015

the other JUNE 1 CUT could be-

Jonathan Joseph (cap savings would be $2 million more as a June 1 cut)
or
Garrett Graham (June 1 cut saves an additional $800,000 for 2015)

Will be a crap shoot on Joseph being cut. Clears up cap space but would leave Jackson outside. I don't think they'll do it.

Graham being cut would come as zero surprise. I thought this was a bad contract last year and still do. Not sure if Griffin is starting material yet and CJ caught one TD last year, but both could give same production for a lot less.

No rush to cut Joseph. Anyone else notice Kareems base pay this season is only 1 million? Allows them to keep Joseph one more year and next year his contract is done with zero cap hit.

June 1st early designated cuts do not clear cap space until June 1st.

That isn't his cap hit which is $1 mil base + $2.25 mil prorated signing bonus + $4 roster bonus for a cap hit of $7.25 mil.

That roster bonus is a signal they don't feel desperate for cap space as they easily could have had it prorated instead and his cap hit would have been $3 mil less this year.

Any non signing bonus money a player has coming in 2015 and which is also under contract in 2016 and beyond can be used to free up 2015 cap space. JJ alone has 10M available and could reduce his cap hit by 8M by spreading it out over the next five years. It just doesn't pay to do it until it's needed so we don't lock in future cap hits if we don't need it.

Thanks for telling me something I already knew.

The roster bonus I referenced, KJ's, cannot be converted in that fashion.

I was not aware that a new deal could not be made in the first year. Thank you for the information.

It's 14 characters if you include the space. If you look at it that way, he's bigger than Brian Cushing.
