Default Rattling rookie Carr likely plan of attack for Texans’ defense

Texans linebacker Whitney Mercilus will search for clues that trigger instant in-game decisions.

Texans coach Bill O’Brien will review Week 1 game tape, preseason film and briefly look back at college tendencies.

Texans nose tackle Jerrell Powe will simply power away, turning to old-school football to answer a 23-year-old rookie quarterback the Texans and NFL are barely familiar with.

Some Texans fans are still getting over the five-year David Carr-era. But for his younger brother, Derek, there is little visual proof and less certainty heading into Sunday’s Texans-Raiders matchup in Oakland, Calif. Which is why for as much film as the Texans will watch this week preparing for Carr Two, defenders will also rely on innate physical talent as they attempt to hand Derek Carr his second consecutive defeat and first NFL interception.

“You just go out and play hard and play relentless,” Powe said. “He’s young, so that will rattle a guy up at any position. The main thing is just do what I’m coached to do and just play relentless.”

Carr was solid but limited in his pro debut, completing 20-of-32 passes for 151 yards, two touchdowns, no picks and a 94.7 rating. Oakland managed just 14 points, though, during a road loss to the New York Jets.

O’Brien praised Carr on Wednesday, saying the rookie should become a “good pro” and show clear improvement from Week 1 to Week 2.

With the Raiders potentially receiving a home bounce as they make their 2014 Oakland debut, the Texans’ defense will try and disrupt Carr as often as possible, making the rookie feel more like a college freshman than a starting NFL QB.

“For a rookie quarterback, it’s tough to play in this league,” Mercilus said. “We just try to key in on certain things.”

Linebacker Mike Mohamed acknowledged the lack of pro game tape could limit Texans’ attack. But with defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel long used to weekly adjustments and the threat of the Sunday unknown, the Texans will focus on controlling their pre-planned system and making Carr react to them.

“We expect them to probably do something new,” Mohamed said. “But other than that, you don’t take anybody lightly – this is the NFL. You’re giving everybody the respect they deserve and you’ve just got to be ready.”

For every Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III there is a much longer list of failed high-round draft picks who’ve never become the pro QB they were supposed to evolve into. Two weeks ago, the Texans were set to face a quarterback they have a little more game tape on: Matt Schaub. Now, it’s the younger brother of a former five-year Texans starter.

Carr’s four quarters and 32 passes during Week 1 will be far more critical than anything he did as a Bulldog. And even that information will only reveal so much.

“You’re looking at more what he did last week, what he did in the preseason, than you are really what he did at Fresno (State),” O’Brien said. “I think there are certain things that you look at in college with any rookie quarterback. At the end of the day, you’ve got to look at what he’s doing in the professional game.”

Turnovers are the key..

We force two out of them and we win.. (unless we give up 3).

I don't expect to have special teams magic like in week one -
no one should - it was amazing.

I also don't expect to be able to turn over a team twice in our
red zone -- also a rare thing..

I also expect Carr to turnover all at least 2x in Raiders side of field. Thus creating easy scores for H Town offense.

The title sounds like a template for multiple articles.

Rattling (insert quaterback's name) likley plan of attack for (insert team's name) defense.

Interesting. I wonder for which QBs will our game plan be to make him feel extremely comfortable & safe in the pocket.

How much of the Raiders/Jets game did you actually watch?

I thought he performed alright seeing that his best WR's are Rod Streater and Denarius Moore, and his runningbacks are crappy/non-existent.

Besides an orthopedic surgeon and a neurologist, the Raiders have formally petitioned the League to allow an obstetrician on the sideline during this next game, just in case their quarterback gets stuck in the breech position.
