I think Tate got a rude awakening as a FA. It's nuts how much the NFL RB position has dropped in value over the recent years. Yet, still get plenty of touches throughout the season. Going by his tweets and comments I think he was expecting a bigger payday. Imo, that's why he stayed unsigned in Cleveland so long. Trying to milk as much $ as possible.

Hope he does well

I think the deal we gave Foster was kind of high for the RB position these days. Which I'd still be cool with if he returns to 2011 form

It's a 2 year contract. At the very least, he learned that he's still got work to do if he's going to prove he's a franchise back & worthy of such a contract.

We've got people crying about signing Foster after chronic hamstring issues... I don't think they would be very happy had we signed Ben Tate after missing his entire rookie season & being banged up most of the time he was here.

The only time he (unlike Foster) played throw an injury, was when he was ina contract year... he'll probably sit out next year if he has the sniffles, & play through a leg amputation in 2015.

Wow. That would be awful if Foster did well with one leg. Running backs would be cutting off their legs to try and emulate his success.

How many people work for free? Your entire premise is pointless. Hugs and fan's applauding don't pay the bills.

Guess Peyton Manning should take the vet minimum instead of the $15M. He must be playing for himself.

Walterfootball on the Ben Tate singing:

Browns sign RB Ben Tate (2 years, $7 million): A Grade
I was worried some team was going to overpay for Ben Tate this offseason. Tate is a talented player, but he hasn't shown an ability to stay healthy. Handing him a large contract would have been disastrous, especially considering how devalued the running back position is.

The Browns are getting a great deal. A 2-year, $7 million contract for the top running back in free agency? That's incredible value. If you're not convinced, think about it this way: Donald Brown and Toby Gerhart received deals with just as much money per season, yet Tate is much better than either of them.

When exactly did Ben Tate play for free?

People don't work well with alligators under their desks either.

I said the same thing you later came back and said...which was Ben Tate was playing for himself. LOL...what was your point again?? I didn't fault him for it or say I expected him to "play for free" (??)...I expect these guys to play for themselves. They should be. I guess you just had a diva moment.

Interesting. The top FA running back is not a franchise back... & the lowly Browns did not pay him like one... They may be turning the corner.

Interesting to me that RBs who touch the ball second behind QBs have been so universally devalued around the league. Almost feels like a mutual agreement.

It's crazy to me. Granted, I'm not all that high on Tate to begin with, but these RB's take more of a beating than dang near anyone on the team and they're the least valued of the bunch.

Might as well be a kicker. They get paid about the same while mushing their nuts on the sidelines

Looks like the Browns did something right for a change.

Edit: forgot to add: It's a wishy-washy contract, for a wishy-washy runningback.

He must have known what he is getting before signing the contract. That is pretty much back up running back contract. There was probably not much offers for him. Even though he was saying that He was Elite before FA.

the market for runningbacks is empty. unless of course you're as much a receiver - like sproles. tate, johnson, MJD and others can barely find jobs. i read that many leading backs are being paid in line with kickers these days.

On the radio yesterday, I heard one of the guys say that there are something like 16 kickers and punters who make more than Ben Tate this year.

You're not the only one. He's definitely proven that he can produce like a franchise back, but he can't stay on the field. I'd have thought he would have gotten in the $3M/yr range though..... Donald Brown getting that kind of money & Toby Gerhardt getting that kind of money tells me it was out there.
