I was just reading something on cbssportline about the best backup qb's in the league, and they did not mention once Tony Banks or Dave Ragone? Tony Banks stepped in when David Carr was hurt and I believe lead us to 3 victories one i think even was against Buffalo when David first went down with the shoulder injury. I think he deserves more appreciation for what he did for the Texans with all the injuries. I know Ragone hasnt had much expericence at Qb with Banks being there and alos being behind Carr, but dosent he deserve at least a mention for what he did in the European League?

"Best back up QB's in the NFL"? I wouldn't consider Banks and Ragone in the top tier of reserves....not even close.

Neither would I. I mean just b/c he stepped in and things didn't fall apart speaks more of the rest of the starters than it does for TB.

it's hard to judge a backup QB...but right now i'd have to say that tommy maddox, josh mccown, volek, and brad johnson would be the top back up QB's in the league

1)the starter's position was vulnerable (ok, carr has missed games injured, but he's not injury prone, nor is he likely to lose his job on a performance basis to banks/ragone) 2)teams that are "playoff contenders" for next year (we may push for the playoffs, but we're not banging down the superbowl door just yet) oh, and banks is an average QB and ragone has only poduced in europe, so i dont think either of them get that much respect anyways. |

Tony Banks is one of those QBs who the more they play the more they seem to get exposed. He is fine to come into a game or even for a couple of starts.
There have been Qbs who have played well in NFL Europe and been successful at the highest level (Warner) and others who have not been secure a roster spot (Ron Powlus). Essentially, it is like a great AAA pitcher, you really don't know until he has to perform. The back-up siutation is probably in the top half of the league, but it would be a reach to even put it in the top 10 (12-15 in my estimation) |

The real question is do we trust the backups. I do, and am never afraid when either Banks or Ragone step up behind the line. I honestly believe Ragone should be moved up to second. He need to have more time with the ball in his hands. If he is not recognized, he will move on. (not knocking Tony, I think he is a great Veteran influence on the team.)
Atleast we know that the team is in capable hands no matter what happens.

imo the best back up QB's are Brad Johnson, Kelly Holcomb, Jeff Garcia, David Garrard, Billy Volek, & Jon Kitna

In an attempt to change things up a little bit during this long off-season we're changing todays thread from "How come the team that hasn't won yet doesn't get any respect?" to "Where's the respect for the guys who don't play most of the time?"
I think this is a great thread

I agree with everyone of them.
Josh Mclown? that guy is gawd awful and has no business being in the league. Much like Ragone!! Hopefully Parsons gets a chance to show his stuff, This guy is a starter in this league. Hopefully he'll get a buch of playing time in pre-season. Carr is going to have a great year in my opinion. I can see why they kept banks around, if you are planning to make the playoffs you have to have a veteran back up. I just would rather have a different vet as a back up. |

Can you blame him? He obviously realizes that the MB has huge amount of influence on the Texans coaching staff. How else will Parsons make the squad unless the MB uses its considerable power to influence Capers to drop Ragone and insert Parsons as the opening day starter.

Ive watched Mclown Play nearly every game he's been in. He's awful. Misses easy reads, holds the ball WAAAY too long. Looks like a deer in the headlights.
I bash the back ups because theyre weak. Pretty plain to see. Ragone doing well in NFL Europe "AKA NFL Germany", is one thing. How tough is it to excell when the defense isnt allowed to blitz? |
