The other thing some folks seem not to consider is public persona is not the same as private and neither may be the same as coaching. Also being liked by players is not synonymous with hand holder. Several players and other sources have said Kubiak was very tough, even too tough on the players in coach rather than media mode.

Dick Vermiel is a really nice guy. I know Isaac Bruce's mother in law and she showed me pictures of her and Dick Vermiel in the suite for a game. She said he was reaallly nice....liked to drink wine...like to share wine...

She said they talked for a long time and he got a little drunk.

Jerry Glanville was an arsewipe. Supposedly. Never won a Super Bowl. Never coached in a Super Bowl. Never left Elvis Super Bowl tickets. Like I said, an arsewipe.

Of all the stupid arguments that have happened around here we are getting really close to the top of the list right now.

Being mean makes you a better football coach? GTFO of here with this nonsense.

Pete Carroll is a great guy and just won the damn Super Bowl.

P.S. yes I know about the USC scandal and if you properly research the topic you will find that he was exonerated of any wrongdoing.

If someone ever makes a move about the Texans I think John Travolta will play coach O'Brien.

I like how BO'B handled the question about why they traded Matt Schaub. Basically said that Schaub is one of the players that needed a change of scenery.....basically saying that he sucks major balls!!!

Your close, but let me translate his quote for you. Schaub needed to be traded to a team that's on our schedule because our pick 6 returns have been down and we want to get that stat up next year.

If you know BB, this is him gushing effusively...
Quote:
“I like Billy,” Belichick said. “I like every aspect about him.”

O’Brien was the offensive coordinator at Duke and finishing his 14th season in college football when he jumped at a chance to coach under Belichick.

“He’s well-prepared and smart,” Belichick said. “He has a good understanding of all aspects of the game. He’s great to work with. I’ve got nothing but positive things to say about Billy.”

In 2007, Belichick hired O’Brien as an offensive assistant. He was promoted to running backs coach a year later. After the 2008 season, Belichick named O’Brien as quarterbacks coach and gave him the play-calling duties. In 2011, O’Brien was named offensive coordinator.

“I learned a lot from Billy,” Belichick said. “He had a strong, positive impact on the Patriots.”

As a leader, you've got to find that fine balance between task master and being approachable/likeable and still come off as genuine. That's a hard thing to do and I'm not sure there's a "right" way to do it, but I'm quite positive there are bunches and bunches of ways to screw it up.

Interesting note that OB and his coaches have been seen practicing their practice routines at Texans practice facilities. In and outside going through exactly how they will conduct their practices step-by-step. With such limited hands on time allowed, this is smart to sort out any glitches before the players arrive.

The man is thorough.

Thanks for the transcript.

Quote:
(on how he gets to the motor and work-ethic question with Jadeveon Clowney) “It’s a deal where I’ve studied him pretty closely. One of things and this is not to make and excuse for anyone, in college there’s like 85 to 90 plays per game. He plays all the time. I think if you looked at any player in college, especially at the defensive line spot, playing in a league where most of the teams are shotgun and throwing the ball and rushing the passer, I dare you to find me a guy that plays 90 snaps like his life’s on the line every game. But when the game’s on the line, Jadeveon plays hard. He’s an explosive player, he’s a productive player, he’s an instinctive player. So I think that’s kind of been blown out of proportion but at the same time we’ve got to make sure we get to know him and then keep getting to know him when we get there.”

(on people saying “Can you imagine him being lined up right next to or across from J.J. Watt?” at the thought of the Texans drafting a defensive player in the first round) “People do say that. They say if you draft, say (Jadeveon) Clowney, you’re going to line him up right next to Watt. I think we could at times. But I think one of the things in this league is on defense, you’ve got to be really multiple. Forget about the draft pick, J.J. Watt, you’ve got to be able to move this guy around, do different things with him to really take advantage of his skill set. People ask me about Johnny (Manziel) all the time because we’re in the draft and all these quarterbacks. The guy I really enjoy watching is J.J. Watt. I don’t know if you’ve ever actually watched coaching film on J.J. Watt, but it is, this guy is a great football player. So with a guy like that, you’ve got to move him around and then if you can add a guy or two to that defensive front, certainly that will make a big difference. So I don’t know how much they’llactually be lined up next to each other[/color]. It might be more some next to each other, some opposite end, some somewhere in between.”

I truly hope that every poster in this thread takes the time to read or listen to this. Addresses a ton of things from the draft process, the number 1 pick, multiple actual prospects, use of JJ Watt, defensive philosphy. Most complete conversation I have seen from him since joining the Texans.
