Texas A&M staffer hits two West Virginia players in Liberty Bowl

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap300...n-liberty-bowl

Quote:
A Texas A&M staffer roughed up two opposing players in the first half of the Liberty Bowl on Monday against West Virginia.

As the video below shows, the staffer first dropped a shoulder into a Mountaineers offensive player, then later hit West Virginia cornerback Daryl Worley in the back of the helmet.
stay classy ags, kinda surprising he didnt do the manziel hand gesture afterwards

I was watching the game and saw both. Could not believe the referees did not do anything about it. And I'm actually sort of proud of the WVU kids for not making it worse.

This makes A&M look bad. If Sumlin does the right thing and fires this guy (I think he's a former player who's a GA now) then I won't hold it against them.

But like it or not, it's just one more example that Sumlin runs a loose, undisciplined ship.

My guess is this guy has stood on his last sideline during any college game.

Completely unacceptable and I'm glad Sumlin fired his ass. But WV were no saints themselves.

Video and article.

Quote:
Cameras showed Richardson striking West Virginia players who ventured out of bounds during the first half on two separate occasions. He used his elbow to strike Mountaineers cornerback Daryl Worley in the back of the head and shoved running back Andrew Buie in another incident.

Sumlin was made aware of Richardson's actions at halftime and told Richardson to remain in the locker room for the second half of the game, according to school officials. After the game, Sumlin said Richardson was sent home and he'll decide on further action when the Aggies return to College Station, Texas.

"I was made aware of the situation at halftime, he did not return to the field and he has already been sent home," Sumlin said. "That's nothing we condone, there's nothing about that whole situation that's a part of who we are and what we believe in. As I said, he has already been sent home, and we'll deal with that when we get back."

A class of 2012 signee out of DeSoto (Texas) High, Richardson played linebacker as a true freshman for Texas A&M before suffering a career-ending neck injury in a Nov. 17, 2012, win over Sam Houston State. He had surgery shortly thereafter and has served as a student assistant coach for the Aggies since his playing days concluded.
This is uncalled for behavior by anyone.

I've noticed this crap all bowl season-long, but not like "it didn't used to be this way" but again.........

In the Stone Age when I was growing up it rarely, if ever, happened. It was a big deal to represent your school in what was a festive occasion. Being a member of any bowl team meant something, as in, nothing left to prove. The game was hotly contested, then you went home knowing you were blessed, by God or no one, to be there and to have the experience you knew very few experienced.

Yeah, Woody Hayes, no doubt. But in general, bowl games had a more festive feel to go along with the holiday season.

Today it's, you lost, you suck.

When you were growing up, there wasn't a quadrillion and one bowl games. It used to mean something. It used to be a big deal that you would brag about all year. No more. Qualifying for a bowl didn't mean getting in one. Now if you qualify, you too can go to the mom&pop dinner for two bowl in Podunk ILL.

Here is the statement Sumlin issued:

Quote:
Upon returning to College Station last night, I had the opportunity to gather information and watch clips of one of our student assistant coaches initiating physical contact on two separate occasions with a West Virginia player. I am extremely disappointed and embarrassed, as his behavior reflected poorly on our program.

On behalf of the Texas A&M football program, I want to apologize to Darryl Worley and to Andrew Buie as well as to Coach Holgorsen and the West Virginia family for the inexcusable actions of the student assistant. I removed him from the sidelines at halftime of yesterday's game after being informed of the incidents and, after further review, have permanently dismissed him from our football program.

I also want to apologize to the Aggie faithful, as they deserve a program to be proud of, not only in our play, but in the integrity and respect we show on and off the field. This student assistant coach's actions are not representative of our program.

Good for Sumlin.

I don't like the way he runs his program, but I've always respected him as a coach and as a man. Nice to see him do the right thing immediately.
