(3) #1 picks in 12 years, that is a pretty good measure of consistency.

It means we hit rock bottom again, but this time we really really really mean it that we will stick to our rehab plan and get ourselves out of this mess!

The difference between Andrew Luck and Blake Bortles is Bortles WON his Fiesta Bowl Game. And Bortles did it as the largest underdog in FCS Bowl history.

That and Bortles' girlfriend is waaaaaaaay hotter.

This draft is going to kill me.

I really like what I see with Bortles and Bridgewater. I don't like Manziel because I get Doug Flutie flashbacks.

What ticks me off is that if we pick the wrong one (or even draft the right one and then don't develop him correctly), then the Jags are probably going to get the right one.

And that would suck.

Which one is Blake? They both look so old.

I think Bortles can be great in the NFL, and I hope he is.

I respect that you took a stance and stood firm on it. Many will waiver, you haven't. It's not easy in life being a front runner in a world of followers and I respect you for it.

With that said, you are likely wrong. Good day.

Pretty sure he was saying this metaphorically and it makes perfect sense to me. Obviously a team in 2014 is not the exact same as a team in 2002.

Default Re: Blake Bortles

Watched some film of Bortles (vs Penn State, vs Baylor, vs South Carolina).

Here's my take:

Pros:

Very tough to bring down in the pocket
Steps up well, uses size to avoid sacks
More big than fast, but has enough speed to break containment
Throws very crisp balls in the 10-20 range, has good ball placement especially in the middle of the field.
NFL arm, has the arm to make the 15 out on a rope.
Stands in against the rush when allowing routes to develop

Cons:

Could throw better on the run, loses accuracy when on the move
Very good when going to first read, but tends to lock on
When going thru progressions loses accuracy/throws dangerous passes/doesn't make good check down throws
Ball security is big concern, loose with the ball in the pocket.
Bubble screens/short passes doesn't lead receiver well, throws to receiver not leading

Overall:

Bortles is a large bodied with a good arm. He will be able to extend plays with his size. He will have to learn how to hold the ball better in the pocket to avoid the fumbles. He is still raw, doesn't really scan the field, but he can make all throws and has good intermediate accuracy especially over the middle of the field. If he can learn how to go through his progressions, he can be a very good quarter back.

Weidl: Bortles' field presence is outstanding

Scouts Inc.'s Kevin Weidl called UCF QB Blake Bortles' field presence and pocket awareness outstanding.
Bortles is "even keeled and never appears rattled on tape," Weidl writes. "High competitive temperament." We continue to think that Bortles will earn poor man's Andrew Luck comparisons, but there are some major differences between the two. Bortles command of the offense and willingness to hit receivers in tight situations is very appealing, though.

George O'Leary doesn't see Blake Bortles as 'franchise' QB

O'Leary's definition of a franchise quarterback might be a little more lofty than others, but nevertheless, he doesn't see one in the 2014 draft, and that includes his own player.

"I think a franchise quarterback comes out once every 10 years, and he came out last year in (Andrew) Luck," O'Leary said on Houston area radio show MaD Radio. "The ones I see succeed are understudies."

O'Leary is a believer in his potential, if not sold on his ability to have an explosive rookie season.

"Blake has all the things you're looking for in a quarterback as far as size and mental capacity to handle a lot of things," O'Leary said. "But that first year is tough because those guys are moving a lot faster than the college guys. ... Blake is going to be fine-tuned to what he needs to get done in the pro ranks. He's a quick study and a quick learner."

Sounds like he knows the Texans are going to trade down & don't want anyone else to snag him.

FWIW, same people who said I was crazy for mocking Eric Fisher No. 1 last year at this time are saying the same w/ my Bortles to HOU pick...

The term "franchise QB" has become too subjective to have any true meaning. Is Bortles a franchise QB? Don't know but he's a top-10 pick IMO

So what? A decade of failure is what and the thought that BoB is about to repeat the same mistake over again is what.

I'm in the Clowney corner. No QB is even close to 1-1 in this draft.IMHO

If Rick picks TB/JM/BB then he better give him the tools to succeed. Unlike what they did with Carr. Even if that means drafting

1. Bortles, since this is a Bortles thread.
2. Austin Serfain Jenkins
3. JuWaun James
4. Josh Huff
5. Jon Halapio
6. Isaiah Crowell

In fact after watching last yrs dismal offensive performance, i'm not sure that I wouldn't pick all offense and use FA/Late rd picks to ad a Fatty/S/CB/OLB.

Atleast your young QB would have a chance to succeed unlike Carr. The Offense should become dominant in 2015 and then you can fill in the rest of the defense.

Draft Beau Allen with the com 5th, try to get a nickel CB and Orakpo in FA and the defense should be good enough to go 10-6 even with a rookie QB, because the schedule is so weak.

If we draft Bortles I'll be fine with it. Obrian knows what kind of QB fits his style better than any of us. Hell I've been torn between these three QB's and Clowney since before we even officially knew we had the number one pick. I see the positive in all of them. I'm not hitching my wagon to any of them. I want to go into next season excited to be a Texan fan again. I want to enjoy next year even if there we do take more than a few lumps with a new young QB.

It's been to long since I have really enjoyed this team. So let the chips fall where they may. I'm all in again no matter who we pick.

Having said that, my money is on Manziel. I believe he's going to impress the hell out of everyone in his interviews.

I'll be pretty pissed if if we drafted Bortles honestly....... There are certain guys with his size that I had a good feel of knowing they would be good at the next level. Big Ben is one of them. I've never gotten that feel for this guy and I've watched him play quite a bit over the past couple of years. Some guys just have the "it" factor to me, and he's never given me that vibe. This will be a colossal mistake if we take him with the 1st overall pick. Much worse than the Carr debacle. It kind of reminds me of college recruiting when a guy shoots up the ratings based on "potential".

Bortles just screams out Tim Couch to me for some reason. A guy who honestly could probably be ok, but the pressure of being a high pick is just too much to handle.
