Default Arian

There is an excellent write-up on Arian is this morning's Chronicle, by Brian T. Smith. The story is also about Arian's older brother, Abdul, who is Arian's mentor as much as brother.

To review, last season Arian suffered a ruptured disk which required back surgery. To repair and strengthen his body following the surgery, Arian turned to his brother. Abdul, who owns a gym in Houston. Abdul set about reconfiguring and rebuilding our star running back.

"Foster became leaner while making his muscles more explosive. At the same time, a protective wall was built around around Foster's abdomen to better prepare him for the game-by-game pounding." (Chronicle)

"We had to strengthen all the muscles in his core around his back, to kind of compensate for the tear - for the muscle that isn't flowing properly - we had to make sure that everything else was firing properly. Arian was kind of having some kinetic-chain problems. So we had to go back and recalibrtate him, to make sure everything was flowing properly" ( Abdul)

Several quotes from Arian:

On the fatigue factor late in a game: "Everybody's tired. You just have to make sure your 70 percent is better than their 70 percent".

On his running style: "It doesn't look like you're moving, but you're eating up a lot of ground. That's a very misunderstood running style."

And one final interesting bit of info: "Abdul is a film junkie. Twenty minutes after a Texans game is over, Foster's brother has the video uploaded onto an iPad. Soon, he's breaking down the line, overall offense and Foster's attack". (Chronicle)

It a good read. http://www.houstonchronicle.com/spor...nd-5864116.php

I agree. We beat Buffalo pretty much without him though. (Thanks to Watt)

Still he is arguably our MVP up to this point.

I believe he's discussed it before... it's been used in the past to treat other Texans. If I remember right, it's medical hocus pocus. No proof that it helps or hurts, or that it does nothing. It's just something that "makes sense" so they keep doing it.

Mark V. was talking with a couple of former players this morning, and they said all players try to hide their injuries going into a bye week.

Reason being is that any injuries mean that they must report to work for rehab, so any plans they had goes down they drain.

They believed that is the reason why Arian was so upset last Sunday, fwiw.

I wouldn't be giving anyone any extra days off anyway. The guys who need rehab would get rehab. The others are going to be working on fixing the things that need to be fixed.

Still... I'm curious about the "not needing an MRI" thing. Listening to the radio it seems "everyone" breathed (?) a sigh of relief when they heard neither Arian or Kareem "needed" an MRI.

To me it just sounds like they don't want to know what they don't know. For these athletes, everyone would get an MRI for anything that they took them out of a game.... just to be safe.

I would say Hopkins is playing pretty well also, but I guess he is not considered "Big Money". Not yet anyway.

TK is correct. The studies thus far have shown very little consistency with benefit except for elbow tendonitis. Most info is anectdotal or poorly designed studies advocating use in ligaments, plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff, muscle tears (such as hamstring and quad), etc. Others have shown only the efficacy of placebo effect, or a healing span consistent with what would be expected with just plain old good rehab (since rehab virtually always accompanies the PRP treatments) . They've talked about "promise" for years...........that's all they still have. Once thought to be at least totally safe, now they are finding that PRP, especially when inclusive of white blood cells not only don't heal muscle.........but actually cause it to fibrose/scarify.

Although we know that platelets produce "healing substances," we don’t even really know precisely why it might work. There may be advantages for having white blood cells in certain indications or the plasma component and the growth factor component in other indications. That’s a major variability, as is the variation in platelet content of the final PRP product. PRP is not a precisely controlled product. Independent studies are showing that even when using a single technique, it’s almost impossible to replicate a consistent level of platelet concentration.

From this new info, we do know that Foster suffered some sort of soft tissue tear.As we all know this carries with it a high chronicity and recurrence rate. If they are indeed injecting him, I think and would hope that they are injecting one of Foster's groin tendons such as the adductor tendon........not his adductor muscle........I hope.......first do not harm. I have a set of gourds and beads at the office which I use for a little Witch doctor dance I do for those of my patients that insist on not undergoing a necessary procedure or surgery..........They may be just as likely to pay for the "promise" it affords........and has the same effect as if I had I sent them to Walgreens for a certain flavor of Wrigley's gum to heal what ails them...........which would be cheaper and just as effective...........
