Why can I see these things as a fan and a 8 year HC can't?
How do you know they didn't even think about it - do you have secret insider sources that I'm not aware of? The situation with Kris Brown was markedly different - you had a seasoned vet who was coming toward the end of his career, who may have been losing his physical abilities at a rate that merited looking at other options to see if they were better able to do the job. Bullock was in a situation where obviously the physical intangables are there, but the mentality of the league may have been putting pressure on him after a couple of weeks into his rookie season.

Quote:
I never solicited to cut him after that week. I solicited to bring in other kickers which was the title of the thread I started. I wanted Bullock to have to compete to keep his job. If he would have won then so be it. He wasn't challenged to keep his job though which was the same problem with Schaub going into this season.
My bad - you're right, you just wanted to pull in other kickers at that point. It is worth noting that since you started demanding other kickers compete against him in practice that he went 10 for 11 in field goal attempts, until yesterday's debacle. Would you have analysed him on the basis of not kicking as well in practice, or the gametime experiences? Judging on what he did until yesterday the approach that the coaching staff were taking was working.

If we had based who to continue with at kicker on games, and made it the starters job to lose, we would have still had Bullock in yesterdays game, so questions.

Quote:
Well the signs were there prior to this week. Why do we once again have to wait for the train wreck to happen before we prepare and make adjustments?
Are the signs the first two weeks? Since then there has been little evidence to suggest that a train wreck was about to happen.

Quote:
It really doesn't matter at this point. This is just another failure of a season under a regime that continues to coddle players like this for to long and they kill them team's chances.
The "coddling" was working though. Especially in this case, as Bullock is dealing with mental issues, rather than physical limitations. Heck there may even he a argument to be made (but not by me) that 2 of his 3 field goal misses were due to a poor mental state after yesterday's horrible half time. The whole team was on another level in the first half, and in the second half really didn't regain the bounce that there was before the half.

Thumbs up Re: All Encompassing FIRE Randy Bullock

And congratulations to Randy Bullock, winner of the Jacoby Jones "run 'em out of town" award for 2013.

Preceeded only by 2012 winner Kevin Walter and 2011 winner and trophy namesake Jacoby Jones, Bullock joins an elite group of Texans whose infamy and unpopularity is unmatched by anyone else on the team.

And let us also pay special tribute to the runner up of this year's award, none other than Mr. pick 6: Quarterback Matt Schaub!

Texans are bringing in 3 kickers 4 tryouts Tuesday: Shayne Graham, Neil Rackers and Justin Medlock.

I remember Medlock. He was drafted by the Chiefs in the 5th round and was a total bust. Got cut after week 1 of his rookie season. Hopefully they go with Rackers.

Graham was just awful at kickoffs though. Could barely make it to the goal line even with the rule changes. They resorted to squibbing it half the time. Don't think Rackers had much of a bigger leg.

I guess at this point, the Texans will sacrifice return yardage for FGs.

Keep Bullock to kickoff and cut a WR or RB.

Do they have to kickoff? I would sign Rackers or Graham and have Lechler punt or drop kick it!

I'd take Rackers out of that group just for his desire to hit. It would be useful on this awful special teams. Not too impressed by Medlock either.

Just for reference, the kickoff line was moved to the 35 yardline in 2011.

In 2011, the Texans split kickoff duties between Rackers and Hartmann (the litigious punter). Rackers touchback rate was 41.7% (15 of 36), and Harmann's was 46.0% (23 of 50). That placed them 22nd and 17th in the league respectively.

In 2012, Graham had a touchback rate of 30.8% (28 of 91) placing him 32nd in the league (of 38 kickers with enough kicks to qualify).

So far this season, Bullock's percentage is 48.5% (16 of 33) placing him 27th in the NFL.

Finally, Medlock did kick for the Panthers for 10 games in 2012, and his percentage was 41.5% (17 of 41) ranking him at 21st.

For whatever reason (and I'm sure it's obvious, even though nothing immediately comes to mind), touchback percentage has skyrocketed in 2013. In 2012, there were 11 kickers who's TB% was over 50. So far in 2013, there are 24 who meet that criteria. One interesting thing about this is that of one those 24 is currently available, and that's John Potter who filled in for 3 games for the Redskins. He was 8 of 14 on touchbacks. Possible downside is he's only attempted 4 FG's in his NFL career, and is at 75% with his only miss coming from 50 yards+.
