Default Wolf6151 Houston Texans 2014 Mock #1

This is my first 2014 mock draft and based on our current standing of pick #5. I'm also hoping the Texans re-sign Antonio Smith at a discount that lowers his cap hit for 2 yrs..

1. Anthony Barr-OLB, great speed and pass rush and fills arguably our biggest need. We move Brooks Reed to ILB next to Cushing and our 2014 LB corp. consists of Mercilus, Cushing, Reed, Barr. That sound like a very good starting LB corp.

2. Aaron Murray-QB, Keenum played very well last weekend comparitavely to Schaub, but it's only 1 game and he made alot of mistakes as well. With time Keenum will learn and MIGHT be our QB of the future. Murray adds depth and competition. I like how Murray holds the ball high, quick release, arm strength, athletic ability, mobility, plays in the toughest conference (SEC), lots of game experience.

3. JaWaun James-OT, 3yrs. of SEC game experience starting at RT. Great run blocking ability and good pass blocking ability. Fills another huge need and I think he could start day 1. I think Quessenberry will be the starter at LG and I doubt seriously that Brennan Williams ever becomes a starter for us.

4. Tre Boston-FS, I like his size for the position as well as his history of playing CB so he should be good in pass coverage. I think Ed Reed is a 1 and done player, Manning might not be back (hopefully he is) but we need depth at Safety badly.

5. Max Bullough-ILB, great size for the position and college productivity. Provides much needed LB. corp. depth filling a huge need.

6. Andrew Norwell-OT/OG, currently playing LG but has also played LT and was depth at RT. I like his versatility and he provides much needed interior O-line depth.

7. J.C. Copeland-FB, this guy is a tank. Younger and cheaper than Greg Jones.

I think Barr, Murray, and James can be starters right away, Boston, Bullough, and Norwell provide quality depth and situational rotational players, and Copeland becomes the next Vonta Leach while saving us a little money. I'd really like a CB in this draft as well as a DE but we've got more needs than picks and I think we've got the depth at both positions to pass on these positions for 1 yr. though I sure would like some upgrades to the depth. Hopefully we can trade down in the 1st and pick up an extra 2nd and 3rd round picks. Scooter made a very good point a few days ago on another thread, the LB corp is the heart of a 3-4 defense, and the O-line is the heart of any offense and we need to solidify both. This mock provides 2 O-linemen, and 2 LB's for each of those corps. along with a QB that will compete for the starting position, a Safety that will see the field alot in nickle and dime package, some quality depth at ILB and a starter level FB.

Antonio's a FA next year. His cap number will be $0 if we don't resign him but at his age I doubt he'll be expecting a huge contract. We can most likely get him back cheap.

Yes, definitely need an OLB.

I like Murray. Hopefully the flashier QBs will push him to us in the second. I'd hate to be in a Rivers/Brees situation, but I'd hate to be where we are now even worse.

Love the OT pick, but shouldn't there be a LT available we can move to the right side? Even if that means taking one in the second & a QB in the third.

Wolf, I could live with that draft. I am going a different direction to resolve our OLB issue as we have done little with Merci and Reed. Are you satisfied with our corner depth?

No, but I think KJ gets re-signed, we've got JJo for another 2 yrs., and I hope for improvement from Bouye to push Harris and McCain. If we could trade down in the 1st and add another 2nd and 3rd/4th round picks then I'd love to grab some early round CB talent. As is we've got more holes in the team than picks in the draft and sacrifices have to made somewhere. At CB we at least have some starter level talent and their are much bigger holes on the team than CB depth.

I think Barr gives us an instant pass rush and solidifies our starting LB's along with moving Reed to ILB. That instant pass rush also helps our secondary alot. Great CB's with an a poor pass rush get exposed, average CB's with a great pass rush look great.

Love this mock and would be perfectly happy if the draft fell this way. Rick only wishes his draft could be this good. I think the Texans will finish between 5-11, 6-10, that would probably put them in the 7-11 range and Barr will most likely be gone.

With that said, the Texans defense biggest problem is they are 3rd worst against the run in between the tackles. So my pick in the 1st rd would be Nix. He reminds me of a young Wilfork. Nix will command double teams and free up Watt. Mercilus should also benefit with the drafting of Nix. This will help improve the pass rush immensely. It also free's up Mitchell to play some DE and spell Crick at DE and Nix at NT. This also improves the much lacking depth along the DL.

I really like Barr though. That guy is a stud.

So in this scenario you basically are saying the Texans will end up with one of the worst records, because that's probably the only way we have a chance at Barr. He'll be gone before the 10th pick. Personally, I hope we don't pick that low. I'm hoping for Case to turn the team around and we make the playoffs, but I digress....

As for Murray, I'm just not sold on any of the QB's coming out this year. It looked promising before the season, and it certainly is a better crop than this past draft class, but I guess, as the season has worn on, I just don't see any QB that looks that good. They all have wort's! There is no Luck or RGIII. Heck, I don't think they have a Ryan Tannehill in this class! I could be wrong, but as of now, I just don't see any of them being good enough to start. Murray could be good if they sit him and he has time to learn. I guess a lot will depend on what Keenum and the team do for the rest of the season. If Keenum's the guy, then I would want to use that 2nd pick on something else (maybe ILB or DE) and pick up a QB a little later.

When I made this mock we were in the #5 spot of the draft, I went with the current standings. We are now in the 7th/8th spot depending on which site you use. When the season is done I think we'll be selecting in the 10-12 range.

As for QB's I tend to agree with you, I'm not overly impressed by anyone yet. Nobody screams trade up and get that guy. I don't see a Luck or RGIII in this draft yet but they've got time to improve and change our minds. I like what I see in Murray, thus the reason I took him in the 2nd round. I think we need to remember that alot of these guys will get better once their season is over and they get into camps prepping them for the Combine and the NFL.

@SteelB, I really like Nix as well but when we were in the #5 spot I just couldn't pass on Anthony Barr when our LB corp. is arguably our weakest squad on the team and thus our greatest need.

Barr will be no better off the edge if the qb is allowed to slide and climb in the pocket. When ot's know u have 0 inside push, they just push olbs past the qb.

I'm only familiar with picks 1-5, but you'll hear 0 complaints from me. Solid and addresses the team's needs very nicely. I'm mixed on Murray but bringing him on in with a 2nd is good. I'd like to see how he develops.

Really dig James and Bullough btw. Nicely done.

I really like that draft Wolf .... I just have this one burning issue that we haven't ever been able to address with the right player since Seth Payne left.

Earl Mitchell hasn't been terrible but he definitely hasn't produced enough of a push up front to force OT's to do something other than push the outside rushers beyond the QB allowing him to step up or escape out the flanks quite often ....

Mercilus & Reed have been .... Just like Barwin last season , close but just short so many times. Im beginning to think that no matter who you put on the edges , we're going to see the same thing happen until we get a push up the middle. That should also free up Watt to wreak more havoc ....

Two other issues also tied to the NT spot are teams running up the middle and keeping the ILBer clean .... two years in a row we lose Cushing , this years injury I think could have been avoided with better play from the NT spot , IE: the back being forced to chip the NT.

Many of us have been asking for a big nasty 320lb+ guy inside for .... a long time. I still want that guy inside.

I just don't know what pick to target that inside guy with as there are so many needs and your first three picks do seem to address those.
Keenum turning out to be a diamond in the rough would sure be nice allowing us to neglect the QB position and use that pick elsewhere - DT/NT or ILB .... but at this point I don't think we can bank on that.

The only way Ninja signs for cheap is if his play has seriously declined. Contrary to popular belief Ninja and his agent will be looking to sign a new contract for as much money as they can negotiate. Ask yourself, what would you do in this situation. If you say you would walk away from a million or two, your lying or confused. Texans start 2014 new year w/ approx $8 mil in cap space, that's about what it will take to sign Mitchell & Ninja. What will Smubiak do to sign the remaining 13 contracts?
************************************************** *****

Not a fan of Barr, I have watched 3 UCLA games this year and Barr is easily blocked, often stood up and when blocked he's not strong enough to disengage. I expect him to be an average OLB in the NFL.

The league hasn't been willing to pay veteran DLmen since the new CBA. If he wants to play, there aren't going to be a lot of teams knocking at his door with a big bag of money.

& you're out of your mind if you think we'll take a $4M cap hit for either Antonio or Mitchell in 2014. $8M for the pair... lol.

& you're out of your mind if you think we'll take a $4M cap hit for either Antonio or Mitchell in 2014. $8M for the pair... lol.
Yeah, they have crick and they can draft a nt or sign one cheap. I really wanted pot roast from jax ville but he signed with denver. Raji or williams from cardinals would look nice too. The tennessee kid fits the mold. Uh yeah, wade needs to go.

I would not be surprised to see Mitchell $$2-$3+ mil and Ninja to get $4-$5 mil per season (and that's a 50% paycut). Freeney and Redding both 32, same as Ninja signed last yr for $4+ mil per season so expect a similar market for Ninja. It has nothing to do with the location of my mind. Several DT/NT who were starters signed their 2nd contract and got over $2 mil +. This shouldn't preclude you from continuing any on going "Wishful Thinking".

Mitchell will have to take a huge pay cut to stay. He's a freaking ghost out there while playing in between two guys that defenses key on. He should only be offered the minimum and told he will now only come in the game to give Antonio blow. Because the only thing he's good at is blowing.

Schaub and OD are gone. That will help a lot.

Mitchell's cap hit is $827k. He isn't taking any cuts from that if he stays.
