Rumors Fly About Henry
Saturday, July 09, 2005 - 05:47 PM

Bills News and Notes WGR 550: With the start of Bills training camp closing in, the rumors have intensified about what exactly will happen with Buffalo's unhappy running back Travis Henry. The last few days have drawn attention to a possible deal that would send Henry to Jacksonville to fill the void left by an injured Fred Taylor.

The WGR Morning Show is counting down the days to training camp by going Around The League to preview each NFL team. Today, they talked with Jaguars Play-by-Play man Brian Sexton who got right to the point. When asked if he thought that Jacksonville was going to trade for Henry he said simply, "Yes."

Latest Henry Rumors
Friday, July 08, 2005 - 08:19 PM

BillsInsider Original Content The latest word on Buffalo RB Travis Henry is that he will be traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars and that the deal is all but done. The Bills would be recieving a 3rd round draft choice in next years NFL draft and there could designated production benchmarks that, if met, could turn it into a 2nd round pick. If there is a hangup on the deal, it will be based on the conditions needed to transform it from a 3rd to a 2nd rounder. Henry is expected to take a physical in Jacksonville sometime next week, which he will pass, and it shouldn't be long after that the deal is made official.

The Tennessee Titans are also in the mix (and recently the Vikings have been added in the rumors), but at this point it looks as if Jacksonville is more willing to meet Tom Donahoe's demands.
I guess Henry's physical will be the key. There were concerns that Travis had some ligament damage there. I'm bummed that the Jags were able to pickup Henry this late. I didn't think the Jags were playoff contenders with their current RB situation.

I really thought that Fred was going to be fine...but I think he will be back by mid-season...having Henry will definately help us in the first half. I look forward to seeing more news on this. The media in J-ville hasn't said a word about this. I know it's really all just rumors at this point, but it would be great to see Travis in a jags jersey.

If true it definately improves the Jags running game. I'm wondering how Taylor will react to this if it occurs. Henry has stated many times he wants to go to a team where he can be a starter, and if he performs well while Taylor is out he might not give back the starting position.

Henry will perform well wherever he goes. The key is staying healthy.

Travis is in the last year of his rookie contract & becomes a free agent after this season. Taylor still has 3 seasons left on his contract, which is cap friendly. The Jags could sign Henry as a FA, but I expect them to keep Taylor & look for his eventual replacement in the draft.

Henry was signed to an extension a couple years ago. I don't think he's a FA after this season and I know that he's not playing out his rookie contract.

According to fanball.com did sign an extension in '03, but it expires after '05.

The NFLPA website shows that 2005 is the last season of Henry's contract.

Chris Mortensen is on Mike & Mike right now and said a deal for Henry with the Titans could be done by today.

If that's true, we may have set our priorities on Alexander

Or it could mean the Jags get left out in the cold with a gimpy Taylor & several stiffs at RB. And that would make me sad.

From ESPN.com,

Quote:
Despite reports that the Jacksonville Jaguars are close to acquiring Travis Henry, the Tennessee Titans have made the more attractive trade proposal to the Buffalo Bills and are the front-runner in the chase for the disgruntled tailback.

Discussions between the Bills and the two most ardent suitors for Henry have been ramped up, and the situation remains in flux as Buffalo officials continue their efforts trade Henry sooner rather than later. The Seattle Seahawks, who had earlier indicated interest in Henry, apparently are out of the hunt.

Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio told the Florida Times-Union on Thursday that the addition of Henry, who has been on the trading block for virtually the entire offseason, could be completed "in the next few days or week."

"The fact that we have an opportunity to acquire a running back [with] this kind of talent is something we have to look at, [and] so we're looking at it," Del Rio said. "This may or may not happen, but we're protecting our interests, and any time we think we can acquire somebody who can help us, we're going to do that."

In their quest to add a proven tailback as an insurance policy in case star Fred Taylor might not be fully rehabilitated from knee surgery for the start of the regular season, the Jaguars have completed one crucial element in a potential acquisition of Henry. ESPN.com has confirmed that the Jaguars earlier this week reached agreement in principle with Henry on a multi-year contract extension.

But the Jaguars are lagging in the second half of the equation -- satisfying the price tag of Buffalo general manager Tom Donahoe, who has been seeking a third-round draft pick in return for the four-year veteran tailback.

It is now believed that Tennessee, which has been trying to land a proven tailback to back up fragile starter Chris Brown, has offered the Bills a solid third-round pick. That pick, it is believed, includes no conditions. It is not known what Jacksonville has proposed to the Bills, and it's actually unclear whether the Jaguars even have made a formal offer. The Titans have not been able yet to reach a contract extension accord with Henry.

Because Henry is entering the final year of his contract, with a scheduled base salary of $1.25 million for 2005, an extension is important. No team would want to deal for Henry and then have him depart as an unrestricted free agent next spring.

Further complicating trade negotiations is that Tennessee general manager Floyd Reese is attending his son's wedding this weekend and could be unavailable for bargaining.

A tough and determined inside runner, with a pair of 1,000-yard seasons, Henry is an attractive back for both teams, in part because of the injury problems of their current starters. Brown has missed considerable playing time in both his seasons with the Titans and is currently recovering from a broken hand suffered this spring. Taylor had knee surgery in the offseason to repair what he said were two torn ligaments.

Del Rio said Thursday that Jaguars officials were encouraged this week by the progress Taylor has recently demonstrated, but acknowledged the veteran back will practice only once a day, likely in shorts, for the opening stages of training camp.

Fred Taylor is easily a top 10 back (if not top 5) when healthy. Unfortunately he has had injury problems throughout his career that have taken out large chunks of his playing time.

Travis Henry seems like a solid back that could step in and start. I'm just not sure the Jags should overpay for a guy that probably won't be a starting for them in 2006.

Fred Taylor is a better back that Henry when healthy...I hope by this pick-up, it will motivate Freddy T. to get back on that field and prove that he is the premiere running back of the Jaguars.
