The only reason I can even conceive of that would cause them to pass on waivers and sign them immediately is if claiming them off waivers denies them the right to require a physical and drug test, and signing them off the street gives them that right.

If that's the case (and I honestly don't know if it is), the it would be a pretty compelling reason under the circumstances.

For what it's worth:

Montgomery passes drug test after being released:

Quote:
Sam Montgomery’s release from the Houston Texans was not due to marijuana use, as has been reported by ESPN.com. The former LSU Tigers star was among three rookies released by Houston for a team violation prior to the game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Following his release, Montgomery voluntarily submitted to an independent drug test in order to provide further proof and evidence that he was not using illegal drugs. The results of those tests came back negative, confirming his statement that he was not using marijuana or illegal substances.
This isn't to say that Montgomery didn't do anything else that would make getting caught smoking weed (or assuming as much) the final straw, but it's another wrinkle in the story.

In any case, it sucks to see Montgomery cut, both for his status as a third rounder and as a senior at LSU in 2011 who watched him tear up. Hope he finds a good team to sign with; preferably a 4-3 where he's naturally suited...

Heard theory on radio yesterday that they cut Montgomery at same time so they could cover up that they blew the pick. After the above info this sounds more plausible. I still think they are scrambling to save their job. Many of these actions probably should have been done earlier in season or during preseason. We all know this regime is very SLOW and slow to act. Joe still here. Kubiak still here. etc....

Did the team officially release a statement that they were released for drug reasons? Or is it still all twitter based backroom sources?

Agreed, it's possible that this was the most convenient way to cut him. I had initially been excited about the Montgomery pick, then I saw how slow off the LOS he was in college and preseason. I might be something that couldn't be corrected.

THis has been covered already, but Sam wasn't slow off the snap in college but asked to key off of the tackle he lined up against; look at his sacks against Clemson and you'll see what he does when allowed to key off the snap.

I am very familiar with E-screen testing. It’s uniqueness is that it is a closed system which once the specimen is in the specialized cup, it is thoroughly tested within the cup without this specialized cup requiring to be opened and handled by multiple personnel in the testing process. This minimizes lab error. However, in its many options, it does not assure that the specimen submitted was from that individual. None of collection centers require that a donor strips prior to the donation, which is done in a private room without observation. In other words, there is no guarantee by the company that the specimen was not substituted for someone else’s.

[FYI, E-screen does not test for any PEDs besides amphetamines}

I'm confused. Why would they cut someone just to "cover up" that they blew a pick? They've had many bad draft picks over the years.

If anything, these cuts were made to open up roster spots so they could bring in more people. This team is in full panic mode, and are desperately trying to salvage this year.

Any players they pick up will be special teamers and spot relief at best, so I am hoping they raid a bunch of practice squads with the sole intention of adding speed to the team.

We can only hope, but why do I get the feeling that you could give coach Joe 11 pro bowlers and the ST's would still stink.

Do these guys hurt the Texans chances of winning? If yes they shouldn't have been cut. But at 2-5 I believe we know the answer is no, so cutting dead weight is how I look at this situation.

If this were Foster or Watt do you think they would've been cut? If you're a fringe player you have to toe the line. If you dont, you get cut.

Yep....that's why I threw that "if" in there. Lots of ways to beat these drug tests....

I read an article the other day (ESPN I think) that said, per the new CBA, a team could not release a player for drug related offenses such as failing a drug test. Not sure what they were doing though so not sure what the policy is for whatever it is they are accused of doing.

Gotta love those team rules man.
