Default Nick Saban: Mel Kiper, other media experts don't have a clue

Nick Saban critical of Mel Kiper, other experts who 'don't even have an idea'

Quote:
"I think a lot of expectations are created with these guys," Saban said. "I hate it that Mel Kiper and all these guys say this is the No. 1 guy at his position. They don't even have an idea."

Kiper is ESPN's long-time NFL Draft expert known for his big-board projections. Saban said any such talk at this point is meaningless.

"And most of the teams haven't even evaluated them yet when they're underclassmen," Saban said. "But what it does create is this expectation that this guy is the best left tackle that ever played the game. So every time he gets beat, well, he isn't playing very well.

"But the fact of the matter is, is he still plays pretty well. Has he gotten beat a few times? Yeah. Is that unusual for any player? Probably not. I'm sure if you ask him, he would tell you things he's like to improve on and do better. And I think there's things that I'd like for him to improve on and continue to get better. But nobody here is disappointed in the way he's performed and we're going to keep on helping him to be the most consistent performer he can be."

Just glad to see a coach say what people should already know. the draft, ya know the actual event, proves this every year.

Let's note that Nick Saban has a dog in this hunt. He wants his players to be drafted high (preferably after exhausting their eligibility) because it helps recruit future stud players. However, he doesn't want these players to dream of sugar plum fairies and signing bonuses instead of LSU's tendencies on 3rd and long. Mel Kiper and the like serve no purpose to Nick Saban.

And I say this while not being a Mel Kiper fan.

I get the impression some media scout is pumping & dumping on college players for the NFL on a game by game basis, and that that's what prompted Saban's comments.

I just like that he dumped on Kiper.

If you liked Saban going off on Kiper, check this old-but-goldie of then Colts GM Bill Tobin going off on Kiper. This is about 20 years ago, and the Colts GM pulls no punches with his thoughts on Kiper. He gets cranked up at 'bout the 40 second mark.

Kiper's main strength is he has almost an encyclopedic knowledge of the draft classes coming in. He can tell you about the no-name CB from a DIV 3 school that the Raiders just overdrafted. His analysis on actual player mechanics and whatnot may not be as good as others (Mayock, LZ) but he knows ABOUT the players, no matter who they are.

And Saban isn't "right". He's trying to hype up his boy McCarron who is not the best QB in college fb right now.

The last media talent evaluator that I truly respected was Joel Buchsbaum. I can still hear his nasally voice in my head. His analysis was alway so good that I often pulled over to the side of the road or sat in my truck to hear it. I really miss that dude, because he was right way more often than not.\

***edit: just reading some stories about Buchsbaum, and came across the following (which I read years ago). It says a lot:

Quote:
In the piece, McClain writes about how much respect Bill Belichick had for Buchsbaum.

"Among the stories Belichick told about Joel was trying to hire him when he was the head coach at Cleveland and after he was hired by New England," McClain writes of the service that was held after Buchsbaum died. "As Belichick explained, Joel politely declined, saying he felt like he worked for every team as long as he was at PFW and covered the league.

"For those of you who never got to hear or read Buchsbaum, here's the ultimate compliment I can pay him. We all know how super-secret Belichick is. At the service in Indianapolis, Belichick told a story that showed how much respect he had for Joel's personnel acumen.

"Belichick said every year, the day before the draft, he called Joel and disclosed his draft board. Belichick said he actually made a few changes now and then based on Joel's evaluations.

"On Wednesday, I seriously doubt Belichick is going to be calling any of the current draftniks and revealing his draft board to get their opinion."
