Default Is Kerry Rhodes proof that gay players can't come out and remain employed in the NFL?

Kerry Rhodes hasn't officially come out I don't think, but I'm pretty sure he's gay. He's not a bad player. Unless there is some injury or attitude stuff I don't know about, why can't he get a job?

Whoa..... I liked him when he was drafted & played with the Jets. I thought he was going to be the next "great" safety. Then when he went to Arizona I thought he would be a fine replacement for Adrian Wilson, but stopped "watching" him.

I don't know if he ever really developed. But his numbers have been declining since his rookie season. Stats for a safety really miss a whole lot, but without watching him for the last 3 or 4 years, I can't say.

But the numbers alone are probably good enough reason for him to be unemployed. I mean I've never seen a safety with those numbers that played well enough to start. & if he's not a starter he's JAG...

Rhodes was a starter in 2012 and had 4 ints. While he is 31, you have to assume Rhodes has something left. It could be that Rhodes hasn't received an offer he deemed acceptable, We don't even know if he wants to come back and answer questions. Essentially, we don't know why Rhodes isn't in the league right now. But the least likely reason is that all of the 32 teams think Rhodes can't play.

in Rex Ryan's book he called him "a selfish-ass guy," and said that he didn't like to work. I think that has more to do with his not signing than anything else. Lazy 32 year old players are not what teams are usually looking for.

Is Vince young gay? Doubt it, I think sexuality (other than being a pedophile) is the least of a players baggage.

I read that Rhodes went in and worked out for the bengals some time after all those pictures came out with his supposed ex boyfriend.

They released a statement saying he wouldn't be signed at that time.

Now I figure that if he was a star player a team would sign him. Maybe it is the attitude stuff. I can see that. Living in the closet in that environment is probably frustrating.

Just seems that it's weird that this stuff is put out there and then bam...no more employment.

It does. PFF rated Rhodes as the 4th best Safety out of 88 in the league last year. (>25% snaps)

Question is, why do gay people need to "come out"?

I didn't "come out" as straight. If you want to be treated like everyone else, shut up and stop trying to draw attention to yourself and just live your life.

You are lying to yourself. You came out by appearing in public with girls, by hitting on them in bars and introducing them as your girlfriend, spouse, etc.

That is the coming out that most people are talking about - not hiding.

What it means is the crusading national media and the lefties/gay-loving crowd in Hollywood are still batting 0 when it comes to their cause of having a gay guy in major league sports in the US come out.

No it isn't. If gay people just want to go be gay then so be it. Its the "in this interview" or "held a news conference" or in normal society when they bring all their family together and make a big announcement. Like them wearing pink plum smugglers with a lavender shirt tied up around their waste didn't give it away years ago. Most people who are gay, everyone already knows they are gay, because they act gay. Its the having to make a big production out of it that is annoying.

I bet gay people think it's annoying that they're discriminated against in most places around the country. Not to mention the bullying, teasing, being made fun of, etc that many if not most of them had to endure growing up.

I think we can deal with their "press conference". Just don't watch it if it's annoying to you.

Shouldn't have to deal with it if their contention is that they just want to be treated like everyone else. However, if they want to be treated as "special" and force society to look at them, notice them, and give them special treatment, then they deserve whatever they get.

Again, you don't even have to "deal" with it. Tune to a different channel. Go read another thread. You choose to be here.

You seriously are telling me in modern day society you can avoid having to "deal" with gay people wanting you to know they are gay? You can just turn the channel or walk away? Seriously? Where do you live? A cave?

edit: sorry just saw you were from SLC ... basically a cave ... my bad

I really don't think there any reason for me to continue having this conversation with you. Have a nice hate-filled life.

But you know that's not the way things work. If any player is seen going into gay bars or brings a male date to public functions where the other guys are bringing females then there will be "talk" which will result in questions from the media. You KNOW this. Society itself, by asking those questions, participating in the whispering, making "I saw so-and-so with a DUDE on his arm" tweets in social media, forces that "special treatment" as you call it.

It used to be that interracial couples caused this kind of fuss and eyebrow raising. Now we've gotten used to mixed couples and it's not even noteworthy any longer. One day, maybe, gay couples in public with be treated with the same ho-hum, no-big-deal attitude from everyone.

But we aren't there yet.

There were always rumors that Troy was gay in Dallas, but I never even once saw the media ask him about it. Maybe I just missed it but could swear it never happened.
