1 injury in 4 years is extremely injury prone?

He got very little guaranteed money - $9 mil out of $55. Patrick Willis got $29 mil guaranteed.

I thought Cushing got $21M??

The Texans have agreed to terms with Cushing on a six-year, $55.643 million contract extension, a source involved in the deal told NFL.com's Ian Rapoport and Albert Breer. The deal includes $21 million in guaranteed money.

Ooops - looked at a bad article. Still $21 is not unusually high. Geno Atkins' $56 mil contract has $31 guaranteed.

He had surgery on his patellar tendon following his rookie year, iirc. So 4 years, two tendons and one suspension. Batting .750. Maybe the Lastro's should offer him a contract.

Testing positive is not an injury and he missed no time for the patella cleanup which he said predated his rookie year. While he has been a Texan he has had one injury which has caused him to miss playing time.

Correct. From: CBS Houston Oct 14, 2011

With McNair's accumen as a businesman and Olsen's expertise with salary cap and contracts I feel confident this is a very good contract although exact particulars like up front bonus (he did not get one first contract)are. It could be even better than it looks as did Schaub's which is a very favorable to Texans deal.

In college Cushing had dislocated shoulder and ankle injuries. As a Texan he played through some injuries but they cost him effectiveness and playing time and caused listings of probable or questionable several times. In '09 shoulder and foot. In '10 knee, foot, neck. In '11 foot, knee, elbow, hamstring, ribs, knee. In '12 ribs, ACL. Yes, that's what I call extremely injury prone.

Among Cushing and 2 other easily hurt players, Andre Johnson and Matt Schaub, I'd like to bet somebody a 12 pack. My contention is that at least one of these will not play in all 16 regular season games.

Numbers can be deceiving when it comes to NFL contracts, but in the case of inside linebacker Brian Cushing, the "Moneybags" moniker J.J. Watt gave him yesterday is apt.

Cushing was absolutely correct when he said most players coming off a torn ACL don't get this kind of deal. According to his contract documents, the Houston Texans showed just how much faith they have in Cushing's health and recovery with this contract, giving him a deal with guaranteed base salaries through 2015.

Cushing
We already knew the deal included a $9 million signing bonus and $21 million in guarantees overall. It also has a $6 million option bonus, with 2019 an option year that has to be picked up by 2014.

His base salaries of $2 million in 2014 and $4 million in 2015 are guaranteed. The 2014 base is guaranteed for skill, injury and cap, which means if they release him for any reason he still gets the guaranteed base. The 2015 base is only guaranteed for injury, which shows faith in his ability to stay healthy.

Cushing's base goes up to $5 million in 2016, but it increases to $6 million if the Texans don't pick up the option year. And each year of the deal he has a per-game roster bonus that totals $1.25 million.

The cap numbers are $4.449 million this year, $5.390 million next year, $8.25 million in 2015, $9.25 million in 2016, $9.75 million in 2017, $9.7 million in 2018, and $9.5 million in 2019.

I understand the injury part differently.
That clause is in there to protect the player in case he gets injured.
If Cushing is healthy in 2015, but the Texans decide to cut him, he will not receive that certain amount of money.
If he gets injured in practice or in game, he's guaranteed of that money.

In that regard, it's the same in principal like Tom Brady's recent extension deal.

Something confusing me, article says his bonus was $9 m which would be prorated over 6 years or $1.5 tioadd to each of the six base salary or in 2014: $2m (base) + $1.5 (prorated bonus) = $3.5 m cap. Article then said his 2014 cap is $5.39. Is the difference likely to be miscellaneous bonus?

You can only prorate bonuses a maximum of 5 years....and you missed "And each year of the deal he has a per-game roster bonus that totals $1.25 million."

More detail

Quote:
The new deal contains $21 million in guarantees, which consists of a $9 million signing bonus, $6 million option bonus due on the fifteenth day of the 2014 league year (March 25) with an equivalent non-exercise fee, a fully guaranteed $2 million 2014 base salary and $4 million 2015 base salary guaranteed for injury only. The base salary guarantees have offsets.

Cushing has unguaranteed $1.143 million, $5 million, $5.5 million, $7.25 million and $8.25 million base salaries in his 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 contract years. There are also per game active roster bonuses totaling $1.25 million ($78,125 per game) in each of the extension years (2014-2019).
Quote:
The Texans gain $200,000 of cap room with Cushing’s new contract. His 2013 cap number goes from $4.643 million to $4.443 million. Cushing created his own cap room because his base salary this year decreased by $2 million while his signing bonus counts $1.8 million during the 2013 through 2018 contract years.

The big cap benefit for Houston comes in 2014. Cushing’s 2014 cap number is significantly less (at least a $3.4 million difference) than it would have been if the Texans had franchised him instead of signing him to an extension. This year’s franchise tag number for linebackers is $9.619 million. Since per game active roster bonuses are treated like incentives on the cap, only the amount of the roster bonus for the games Cushing is active this year will count towards the cap in 2014. Assuming Cushing is active for every game this season, his 2014 cap number will be $6.25 million because his entire $1.25 million roster bonus will count on the cap.
So why did Andre restructure?

Because the Texans had to add players #52 & #53, add 8 practice squad players and put 4 players on IR. All of the above is included in the salary cap. Texans were only about $2 million UNDER and the above put them OVER.

Prior to the start of season all NFL teams must now account for all salaries, injured reserve, practice squad, settlements, likely incentives, grievance holds, etc. and all is included in the salary cap.
