Default Late delivery - is it just our system?

Ok,

Someone with more time go back and tell me something?

- how many QB's do we have that throw the ball before the receiver makes the break on his routes.

It just seems to drive me batty.. we seem to wait so long before the balls is in the air for us.

Keenum threw that way with regularity in college.

In the last game, Martin was just making his turn when the ball arrived into his arms; that means Keenum had to throw the ball before KMart made the break.

The interception intended for Hopkins was thrown before DeAndre made his inside break. I'd say about 40% of our passes are that way. Dunno where you're coming up with this theory.

We've been throwing the ball to a player before he makes his break since Schaub got here; Carr couldn't ever seem to do it. I don't know what you're talking about. You're going to make me go back and look at old games to verify.

If you have that play on tape, can you look at how covered Andre is on that, Matt looked right at him and then moved passed that read. From my view on the field, which was slightly elevated it looked like Andre was completely open.

I did admit it seems like it from my vantage point in the games, hence why I've asked. I'm down in the endzone so I get a much different view of the game that I really enjoy but sometimes it drives me batty too..

I need more hours in the day, reviewing game tape time isn't high in my list unfortunately.

He was easily open but it's preseason so I would like to think Schaub is working on his timing with Hopkins. If it's a regular season game I bet he hits AJ on that route but this is the time to work with your other starters and buid the relationship needed to actually throw those routes on break.

And let's face the truth of it. Other than AJ or OD who here has a ton of experience? Graham yes but the others? They are all wet behind the ears. How many of them you trust to consistently be open upon breaking their route? Think it is more of a matter of relationships/experience needed. We have a very...very young group of receivers and this is the little bump in the road to cross during that time.

The second pass by Schaub was also thrown before Hopkins made a break to the outside.
The Texans were in 12 personnel.
One TE lined up next to Newton while OD was in a bunch formation together with AJ and Hopkins in the left slot.
The Dolphins were in their base defense (4 linemen and 3 LBs).
The LCB stayed on the left (even though the Texans did not have a receiver on that side). That was the first sign of zone coverage.
When the Texans sent OD in motion to the far right, that LCB sliced out to take him on. That's the second sign of zone coverage.
Schaub saw that, especially since nobody jumped on Hopkins initially as the FS was dropping back.
Hopkins ran a quick out from the slot; the RCB that dropped to the flat was too far away to be quick enough to make any play on the ball.
AJ, in the meantime ran a quick hook and Graham ran a short "look-in" route to the right hook/curl area.
Basically, Graham occupied the hook/curl defender.
AJ stationed himself between that area and the right flat.
The Texans were flooding two zones with three pass catchers for a quick 8-yd gain.

Timing and positioning have to be perfect when running these spot passes, but the QB's delivery can be mistimed even on patterns where the receiver sees him release the ball. I thought Case's releases were right on time Saturday. We may have ourselves a future starting QB.

Another thing you have to consider is that whole trust issue.

Schaub has to know that the guy running the route is going to be where he's supposed to be. With OD and AJ (and in the past with KW and Dreessen), he had that trust and he was willing to let the ball go early.

With these younger receivers, he doesn't have that sort of trust, yet. I think he's getting there with Hopkins and maybe Martin (although, there's always the issue of actually catching the ball with Martin.)

The safety, Clemons, was right in the vicinity to make the play on AJ. Dre is running a curl with his back to the safety, perhaps Schaub thought Hopkins has YAC opportunity or was saving Dre from a big hit in the middle of the field from behind.

As an example, Schaub's first throw of the game was to AJ who ran a 12-15 yd IN route. Schaub let it fly before AJ made his cut inside. The ball got to a spot about 2-3 steps after AJ made his cut. Schaub KNEW AJ would be where he was supposed to be and threw the ball to that spot. That's the kind of connection that only comes with trust and that trust comes with many successful reps.

It's gonna take a little time for Schaub to gain that level of trust with these youngsters. ...and Kubiak has to trust those youngsters to be where they're supposed to be for him to call their number; that too, will take time and successful, in-game reps.

It's hard to tell without a helmet cam. There could have been a few guys in Matt's lane to Andre that it would have been a more difficult throw.

It's interesting they put Grimes on Hopkins though.... is Grimes a RCB kind of guy?

Had their feet not tangled, DeAndre would have been pretty open.
