Default Chargers fan, I come in peace and ask for your help.

Good day all,

First off, I come in peace, I am not here to talk trash or put down you team. And while I am a Chargers fan first, I am a fan of your team too. I love watching football, and when it is not the Chargers, I will watch your team and route for them against other teams.

I am here today to ask for your help as football fans. I know that you are all fans of your team first, but I think most of us are fans of football as a whole. Currently, the San Diego Chargers are trying to get a new stadium.

They have developed a proposal that includes the building of a new $400 million stadium, $175 million in infrastructure improvements, 30 acres of park land and new retail/commercial/residential developments all in exchange for sixty acres of land that is currently a parking lot sitting on hazardous materials contaminated city owned land with no other cost to the city of San Diego. While that is a very brief description of the plan, that is what it entails.

Some of you may wonder why San Diego needs a new stadium. After all, Qualcomm looked awfully nice a few years ago in the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, looks can be deceiving.

Qualcomm is the fourth oldest stadium in the league in terms of being built or remodeled. It was built in the 1960ís. It has been updated over the years, but is really showing its age.
Complicating this is the fact that the city of San Diego has deferred over $50 million in maintenance that the facility was to have in recent years. The combination of age and lack of proper maintenance has resulted in the decay of the stadium with steadily rising costs to operate it.

Now, you say why do you need our support? This sounds like a great deal for a stadium, especially compared to some other stadium deals around the league. Well, unfortunately, this is San Diego and the city government is a mess right now. As you may be aware, they are under investigation for deliberately underfunding the pension system, not once but twice. They are also under investigation for possible fraud related to that underfunding. And currently, two city council members are on trial for corruption in relation to allegedly accepting bribes.

This all results in a not so great atmosphere for getting things done in San Diego. The Chargers have been used as a scapegoat by some on the city council to divert attention away from themselves. I am sure you have heard similar attacks by some on your team, you know the ones that go something along the lines of the rich sports owners who only care about getting every last penny out of the city and residents as it can.

The city council has refused to work with the Chargers to develop their proposal and has in fact even voted down hiring or retaining consultants to work on the deal. This is inspite of the cityís own citizen task force urging them to do so.

We have started a grassroots effort to raise the level of awareness of this issue and to encourage the city council of San Diego to make a good faith effort to develop a stadium plan that is fair to all parties involved resulting in the construction of a 21st century stadium for San Diego that ensures the Chargers remain the San Diego Chargers for many years to come.

What I ask is that any of you, who are fans of the Charges, even in the slightest of ways, please consider helping our cause. While you might think you have no influence on what happens in San Diego, it is important to remember that San Diego is very dependent on tourism and football fans traveling to San Diego for games or Super Bowls put a lot of money into the economy. So you can have a say and can have an impact.

Please consider going to our website and seeing what we are trying to accomplish. There is a message board on our site where you can post your thoughts on the proposal and find out how you can learn more about it and express your support for it.

Our website is: Citizens For a 21st Century Stadium

Again, please consider helping our cause and best of luck in the upcoming season, so long as it is not against the Chargers.

Go Bolts!

I only wish that your owner is more proactive in working things out to keeping your team there unlike Bud Adams which by the way, I would consider going over to a Titans board or finding away to get this to Titans front office. I am sure they are aware of this though. But I my reason for sending you there is because Bud Adams might be tight with some of the Chargers organization due to the ol days of the AFL.

I am in the process of posting a general post like the one I posted here on many message boards as part of my efforts on this matter. And I have a thread on the Titans message board currently. They have been pretty warm in welcoming me so far.

It is interesting to see the vast difference in the way my message is received and responded to on the different team forums. Some are warm and welcoming and other are down right nasty about things.

For instance, the Colts fans were pretty nasty to me before my thread was quickly deleted by their administrators. I much prefer forums like this, where the poster are not into bashing, but talking.

Say, haven't the Chargers beaten us twice? Grrrr...

Foty89, I think your problem also lies in team ownership. The Spanos family botches many of their opportunities to cast themselves in a good light with the community. It particularly does not help when they are asked point blank by the local media and the local government for a guarantee not to move the team back north to LA (where they came from originally, for those of you here not versed in AFL history). In fact, they turn around and go so far as to schedule training camps and such in the LA area, which is interpreted by many as 'marking their territory'.

So while you make a good case for the politicos being a major cause of the problem, the Spanos' actions have alienated so many people that it will be hard to build a grass-roots movement geared toward removing politicians opposed to 'handing out' money to the owners.

Good luck. I think your best hope lies in ownership turnover.

By the way, until they go back to the powder blue uniforms, I kinda boycott them. Sorry 'bout that.

You are correct that they have had their PR problems in the past.

You are also correct in that they will not say they wonít move it they donít get a stadium deal. However, the Chargers are in the lower third of NFL teams in terms of revenue generation. No business would say that they would stay in a bad situation forever with no certainty of it improving.

The training camp issue was a bad experiment that has ended. Training camp is returning to San Diego and will be at Chargers Park where fans can watch and connect with the team. I never liked it being at Carson myself, but I also accepted the teamís position that it was to build chemistry. I am glad it will be back in San Diego.

Spanos is an easy target, as he is rich. It is easy to find things to bash him as he is squarely in the public eye and does from time to time really step in it. However, there is another side to him, the side that is a dedicated family man who started with nothing and has made a success of himself. There is also the man who has given many millions of dollars to charitable causes and supports many community events.

I am not trying to make a saint out of him, but he is not the devil either.

I believe the Chargers have realized some of the missteps they have made and are trying to put the best foot forward. They have been very open about discussing their ideas for the stadium and are quite willing to work with the city. It remains the city who refuses to come to the table.

And I donít think a change in ownership would really impact the city, as they are not even willing to look at what could be a great deal for them.

That is why those of us involved in this effort are trying to get the city to the table to talk. We are trying to get them to do their job.
