Mankins is on the back-end of his career, and has a high cap hit. May be a good deal for the Pats.

At first glance, it's a WTF. 2nd glance, it's the Patriots getting rid of a high cap player soon enough to get something for him. And of course, there's probably a few things going on that we don't, and won't ever learn about.

It's the Patriots.

An undrafted TE the size of AJ and a 4th for a perennial probowler AND ALLPRO and they are losing cap space to do it. Something's whack and the Patriots OL just took a huge hit.

How do they lose cap space? Saved $2.5m towards 2014 cap and cleared his $11m (2015) and $7m (2016) cap hits off the books. Brought in a young TE that could fill the "move TE" role who is making a little less than $500k this year.

He had a $10 mil cap hit for the Patriots this year if he stayed. He is now $12.25 mil in dead space on their cap.

In the Mankins/Wright trade, Pats will gain over $2M in cap space and TB will use over $6M to add him. Doubt Pats got a high pick from Bucs
Pats have some young guys to step up.

Wright might fill the Move TE spot opened by Hernandez.

4th rounder pretty decent sweetener.

Mankins has had ankle problems so perhaps he's damaged goods.

How do you figure that? He is a $4.25m cap hit in 2014 and $4m cap hit in 2015 for New England; after this trade. He had 2 years at $4m per year of pro-rated bonus left.

New England saves $6.25m this year and $7m in 2015 towards the cap.

It's what spotrac has. I'm talking about cap not dollars spent. This year for New England he would have had a cap of $6.25 mil in base + 250k workout (which he has probably already been paid) + $4 mil prorated signing = $10.5 mil cap hit if he had stayed in NE. They now have to suck up 3 years of prorated signing bonus which has not appeared on their cap at $4 mil per year + the 250k workout bonus they have paid = $12.25 mil in dead money/workout bonus. If they get to split the dead money then it will be $4.25 this season and $8 mil next season. So fine in that case he won't actually cost more cap space but the point is there is a ton of dead money. It's not enough to justify getting rid of an allpro, not a just got lucky one year allpro, an every season allpro.

But will he pass his physical? I think New England knows something that Tampa Bay does not.

Why wouldn't he? He started every game last season. There's no trade if he can't pass.

Something may be going on but I don't think that's it.

Mankins played an entire season on a torn ACL a couple of years ago. Plus NE usually gets the best of these deals when they trade their past stars so I'm a cynic on this one. Logan Mankins...it's only a flesh wound.

That's not what Spotrac has. He didn't have 3 years of pro-rated money left, feel free to double check spotrac yourself. He had 3 years left on his contract but only 2 years of pro-rated money left over. His contract was 6 years, but you can only pro-rate signing bonus money for 5 years max. Again it is only $4.25m dead this year and $4m next year.

Patriots obviously fill like that have a player than can back-fill this year. And they get a player that could potentially fill a big need for their offensive system. Add in another 4th rounder they can use to move around in the draft like they usually do.

They've changed the page but let's go with that - $8.25 mil in dead money. That was the last of my points anyway. Dude is one of the best in the league and the anchor of their OL. Performance wise I think it will be a large slip.

What player are you talking about? - the 220 lb TE? If that works out I want the Texans to play AJ at WR for another 3 seasons and then play him at TE for another 10 after that.

OTC hasn't updated their page if you want to reference that.

Yes I think Tim Wright could be a viable slot TE type of player for NE.

Shannon Sharp was barely bigger than that. Not that it makes your point any weaker since his size was aberrant.

BB on LM...
Quote:
Bill Belichick on former Patriots G Logan Mankins: "Logan Mankins is everything we would ever want in a football player(but didn't). It is hard to imagine a better player at his position(except guys we kept), a tougher competitor or a person to represent our program(but not anymore). He is one of the all-time great Patriots(past tense) and the best guard I ever coached(just not lately). Logan brought a quiet(especially quiet now) but unmistakable presence and leadership that will be impossible to duplicate. Unfortunately, this is the time of year when difficult decisions have to be made - and this is one of the most difficult we will ever make - but like every other decision it was made for what we feel is in the best interests of the team.”
