I am sorry but I am calling BS on their calculation method. He isn't even the 27th wealthiest NFL player much less athlete.

Hope this isn't accurate. If the only QB's who make more are Brees and Peyton, it is a joke.

Agree. Somewhat screwy. According to this site:

http://www.piggysalary.com/athletes/...th-and-salary/

and this site:

http://www.theirnetworth.com/Athletes/Matt_Schaub/

Matt Schaub 's net worth is about $46 Million. Michael Vick: $176 million

Here's the current Spottrac top 10 QB listing for 2013. There several ways to sort it, but the highest Schaub shows up is #8 for signing bonus, and #9 for average salary (which includes non-guaranteed future base salary).

He doesn't show up in the top 10 for 2013 base salary, 2013 cap hit, or overall guaranteed money.

Here's their approach to the numbers..........and the entire S.I. "Fortunate 50 List" and the athlete's corresponding "wealth" calculations.

Quote:
When welterweight Floyd Mayweather was No. 1 on Sports Illustrated’s Fortunate 50 last year—knocking out Tiger Woods, who had been No. 1 every year since SI started producing the list in 2004—it looked like a fluke, the result of the $85 million he received for his fights with Victor Ortiz and Miguel Cotto. Now Mayweather is proving that he belongs at the top. From just two bouts this year, one earlier this month and the other scheduled for September, he will earn at least $90 million, and that’s conservative; he could make as much as $128 million.

There are other notable shifts this year. LeBron James (No. 2) passed Kobe Bryant (No. 4). Tiger Woods (No. 5) is back above Phil Mickelson (No. 6)—thanks to $4 million more in tour winnings. Drew Brees wasn’t on last year’s list but he burst into the top five thanks to a $37 million signing bonus from his new contract.

The findings consist solely of salary, winnings, bonuses and endorsements. SI consulted players’ associations, tour records, online databases, agents and media reports. The endorsement estimates come from a stable of marketing executives, agents and other experts, including Burns Entertainment & Sports Marketing.

Candidates for the Fortunate 50 must be U.S. citizens or play in a U.S.—based league. Endorsements reflect current deals, and salaries are based on current or most recently completed seasons; for instance, for NFL players the season that ended in February was used. (Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco’s new deal, which will pay him $20.1 million next season, isn’t reflected.) For auto racing and tennis, prize money came from the 2012 calendar year. Golf earnings are from July 1, 2012 through April 21, 2013. Boxing purses are from August 2012 through May 2013 (but projected money from bouts through September was included since fight deals are done on a yearly basis).

If he is, it's because he invested wisely. He hasn't made that much money TBH. Also, wouldn't Brady be somewhere in the top 50? This list looks stupid.

Essentially what happened with Schaub is that the list factors in any bonuses received as a one year hit - even though it may be related to a long term deal. Not surprisingly, other than Schaub, the only non-rookie starting QB's who got new contracts in 2012 were Peyton Manning, and Drew Brees - the two QB's ahead of him on this list. Subsequent to the 2012 season, Rodgers, Brady, Romo, and Flacco received signing bonuses that ranged from $11.5 Million to $19.5 Million more than Schaub received. The possibility still exists that Matt Ryan could be added to that list too.

This is a one year only glimpse at things, and as such is at best limited, and at worst misleading if you take it at face value and don't try to dig a little to understand it better.

This is yet another stupid offseason list. I'm sure they're counting his entire bonus on the contract he signed last year. He'll never make this list again.

I have to agree. The $17 million signing bonus completely skews what Schaub's real annual salary will be, and he probably won't be on this list ever again. Unless of course he signs another contract with another big signing bonus.
