Default The one thing I'm really enjoying now

I love the fact that the Texans are finally (FINALLY!) a "typical" NFL team. I just sent this in a PM to somebody but I thought I'd post it anyway because it's really what's at the bottom of my interest in the team right now and how high I am on our chances this year.

When the Texans started up in 2002 we were excited about having football back. Bad football, good football, it didn't make any difference. We celebrated moral victories and upsets. We celebrated just the fact that we had a team, which really meant that as football fans went we had a future.

Then the losing started to take its toll on us all and as fans we watched the team and tried to find signs of improvement and progress. They really didn't exist and that may be hard to imagine right now but think about it. Is there a single position that the Capers/Casserly Texans could point to and say "FINISHED!"? I'm not talking about an individual player like Dunta Robinson or Andre Johnson. One player doesn't make a position solid much less set. You can't be one player deep at WR or CB (or anything else really) and that's the best the original Texans ever got.

When we would watch the team implode on a series it would so often just be a mystery what happened. I mean, was the QB crap? Did the OL suck? Was the pass protection the responsibility of the RB or what? When we couldn't do something any number of positions on the team could have been to blame but honestly how were any of us supposed to be able to know? We would argue about it endlessly but the team just kept giving us this "THERE IS NO REASON TO PANIC! EVERYTHING IS OK!" line like Kevin Bacon as the ROTC guy in Animal House and meanwhile the whole mess was heading towards the drain and 2-14 faster than you can say "Where in the hell did you get those mittens David?"

Look at how much had to be replaced to get us to where we are now. In many positions we have only one or two guys who were here before Kubiak and Smith started adding parts and some of those guys are hanging on by a thread. Now we look at our team and when something doesn't work we can all look at the QB and say "THIS is not the problem" with confidence. We can generally agree that the OL is working. We can see inadequacies in our running backs and we know it's not some kind of Scooby-Doo Mystery that needs to be solved to get to the bottom of the problem. Of course we still have areas that need improvement. We need another truly talented linebacker and we need a RB to compliment Slaton and not one who will be gone in a year or two. We need to draft a "cherry" to put on top of this sundae because it's getting close to being "DONE". We need a gifted safety back there and we can always use another pass rusher to pair with Mario who will be around for the long haul. We need things but then so does everyone else in the NFL. After all these years we really are just like everybody else.

Isn't it great to finally be a fan of a typical NFL team?

Casserly had alot of blame, no doubt, but I think we are also getting further away from the expansion tag. 2002 seems like a long time ago.

Your post is a good one, and I agree. I would have rep'ed ya, but it's the ole spread it around stuff again.

We went 8-8 in the toughest division in the league. We have a very good passing attack, and we are on the verge of having one of the best d-lines in football (if we get a book end to Mario).

There is a lot to like about this team, but there is still a lot to improve before we dare whisper Super Bowl to each other.

A lot of guys we cut this year will end up on someone else's roster. Took a while but we're a competitive team....no matter who is injured from week to week. Unless they have a stinker like the Atlanta game last year, we can play with anyone. Does that translate into a play off run....they've got to get very lucky. That opening five is brutal. 3-2, 4-1 anything is possible.

I'm guessing 2-3 after five, 4-3 before our bye week.

Without getting into records who or what needs changed because we have a lot of threads for that. I would like to say however that ever since Kubiak figured out the type of players he needed and then when Rick Smith started making his moves. The dynamics of how I felt about this team changed. It is hard to put into words but the feel of the team and direction seems to be of constant direction. This is our direction, and everyone seems to be in agreement.

It is a good feeling that is for damn sure.

I just want to throw my hat in the ring on this sentiment. It is a good felling to be legitimate indeed. My smart aleck 18 yr. old wasn't making very much fun of me last night.

http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80a0f1d0

on the nfl 10-game Saturday recap, NO TEXANS highlights. They were gushing over the saints and Reggie Bush's leap to the endzone. They said "they're READY for the regular season, however the texans get it done" .

Then as they faded away someone said, the texans are ready also--barely got that in before they loaded the next game's hi-lights.

Now, they did have a seperate video on how matt schaub picked apart the saints but it was STILL COMICAL to me that the Texans got dissed on the 10 game Saturday recap clip.

I love that the Texans are a real, legitimate team...but the bias is still there and brace yourself for more one-sided coverage.

some more texans hate from so called experts:

very good summation Herv

now whats next from your typical NFL team?

I propose this is not your typical NFL team, that its "Above the Heap" NFL team now as they move forward with an eye (Rick Smith) on possible elite, unkown players under the "NFL radar" that they don't play it safe with experienced veterens, instead put their faith in youth, upside & talent knowing they have the coaching resources to develop them to their potential.

a clear example of this is Jacoby Jones. because he was such a standout last preseason showing much promise before his seperated shoulder sidelined him, never returning to his previous form & now he's struggling with fundamentals turning the ball over people are ready to throw him under the bus, giving up on a potential playmaker. maybe alot of "typical NFL teams" give up on Jacoby, but Kubiak is not your typical HC he states
Quote:
“We are trying to push the kid through it. We tried to get him another ball there to end the game on a reverse - from a confidence standpoint, try to get him a chance to make a play. But he’s struggling right now. He’s got a lot of ability. He can help us win, but we’ve got to get the issues fixed. I don’t think it’s a lack of effort on anybody’s part. We’ve got to regain this kid’s confidence somehow, and we’ll keep working through that.

a couple of the most intriquing prospects also play WR & special teams, Mark Simmons, 5-10 187 & LeRon McCoy, 6-1 219. Simmons has looked great @ WR seems very polished more in the mold of David Anderson, just catches everything. On special teams however he looks lost, on one punt retrun he choose not to block his man, running downfield crossing in front of him with no contact then allowing him clear access to Jacoby who had to then let the punt go by him not risking another turnover. the ball was downed on the 3 yardline. McCoy on the otherhand hasn't gotten the reps @ WR so I don't know what he can do there yet but on special teams he is the first one down the filed, assuming the guner role & seems to be a natural athlete/playmaker.

my guess is that the Texans would like to keep all these players, but out of just these three only two tops makes the opening day roster. personally I think Simmons makes the practice squad, while McCoy makes it due to his special teams play & Jacoby will return to form & be more centered, mature & professional in his approach.

so I guess I'm really enjoying the process too as the Texans Rise Above The Heap

We are taking steps to get there but are not quite there yet. Being Texan fans we are diehard "this will be our year" fans. We love our team and believe that we should be an elite team. In order to get there we need to first get to the point where we are not constantly making excuses. We claim that our record was good even though we were in the toughest division (1-5 won't cut it especially when our schedule had us going against other divisions last place teams) As we start our climb up the ladder we will have to face tougher competition, it will not be easy. We blame injuries and play the "what if..." game. Injuries happen and we have definitley had more than our share but it can not be our scapegoat. We complain about media coverage yet we have never given the talking heads the ability to jump on the bandwagon and be Texan Homers. Only in 2004 did we not finish last place in our division.

With all that being said, I would like to through my two cents in. This is going to be our year. I honestly believe that we will contend for a wild card spot this year and continue the journey of becoming an elite team.

For this is the year that we SHOCK THE WORLD!!!!!

Nice post! The fact that we've sold out every game says how much we love football in this town...and, SRO is just around the corner, ala the 'Luv Ya Blue' days of the Oilers. Rememer?...all seats/all aisles/all concourses were full!
