Default How long do you think it will take the OL to "gel"

Its unanimously agreed upon that its going to take us a few weeks for the OL to get used to the pure ZBS. We saw in preseason game 1 we still have a long ways to go. My question for the forum is "how long"?

IMO I think the first 4 weeks of the season are going to be a learning experience. Parly because we're learning Gibbs' scheme and partly because we've gotta play tough run defenses in Pitt, Balt, Tenn, and Jax. 3 of those 4 on the road.

The Colts game however I think our running game will look good against their smallish OL. Which in turn will open up the passing game and football gods willing get us the W against the Colts!!!

My prediction: Week 5 vs the Colts the running game starts to take off and doesn't look back like Forrest Gump on a KR.

That depends on Dr. Scholls

This post will preempt them from ever "gel"ing. I hated that work 4 years ago, and I hate it even more now. Its the curse of our OL!

As long as the OL "executes" the OL will naturally "gel" given time...

Honestly, I think it will take 2 or 3 games to get the new scheme working. By the end of the year, we should be really be seeing it working full action

Luckily, we're moving from hybrid - zbs so it won't be as big of a transition as everyone thinks

Six weeks, six days and six hours.

Which should make things just fine for game three.

Well the Steelers will be having their fair share of O line problems this year and especially in game one. I am pretty interested to see what kind of problems Mario gives their O line in game one. At least we won't be the only team having some O line problems at the beginning of the season.

I think he's already hurt, but I'm not sure if they expect him back by the start of the season or not. The way he plays though, he might be hurt again by week 4 anyway!

Here is our schedule, each team's running yards allowed, and average per rush. Their rank for each stat is in parentheses.

@Steelers---89.9(3)-----4.0(14)
Ravens------79.3(2)-----2.8(1)
@Titans-----92.4(5)-----4.0(15)
@Jaguars---100.3(11)----4.1(17)
Colts-------106.9(15)----3.8(6)
Dolphins----153.5(32)----4.5(30)
Lions-------119.4(23)----4.3(23)
@Vikings-----74.1(1)-----3.1(2)
Bengals-----118.3(21)----4.2(21)
@Colts------106.9(15)----3.8(6)
@Browns----129.5(27)----4.5(29)
Jaguars-----100.3(11)----4.1(17)
@Packers---102.9(14)----3.9(11)
Titans--------92.4(5)-----4.0(15)
@Raiders----145.9(31)----4.8(32)
Bears-------122.9(24)----4.3(24)

Our first five games are all going to be against teams that are strong against the run. Everyone thinks the Colts are a little soft, but notice that they only allowed 3.8 ypc. The reason they were only 15th in yards per game is that teams emphasize the run in order to keep Manning off the field. The Dolphins and Lions should be a welcome sight in games 6 and 7. Unfortunately, then we have to face Minnesota's run defense.

I know that Kubiak wants to establish the run first, and generally I would agree with that strategy. However, considering that we might not be fully proficient in our scheme and that we will be facing some of the best run defenses in the league, we might be best served coming out throwing the ball. Definitely, we need to be unpredictable the first few games because I don't think we are going to be able to just come out and run the ball down anyone's throat.....at least not until Miami and Detroit.
