That's the big difference between IR and PuP.

I should rephrase: I'm very confident that Butler will make the team... I have no special knowledge other than the fact that Butler soared up the depth chart last year after his disease was treated and diagnosed, that's he's supremely nimble and athletic and that he's 9 years younger and healthier than Salaam- besides that fact, he clearly is the coaches preferred option at tackle after Brown, Winston, and Salaam.

It's been that way for a while.

As far as PUP, the only way you get on Reserve PUP (the Week 6 PUP) is to be on Active PUP. The only way to get on Active PUP is to fail a physical before the first practice of training camp. That's why you always see the PUP transactions during the last week of July. There is no Reserve PUP option (in-season PUP) for Weary or any other player besides Dunta. For players who can't pass a physical due to an injury after training camp starts, it either Waived-Injured with a settlement, or IR with full salary and medical care/rehab for the season.

Thanks.
You would think that the NFL would take a lesson from MLB and have a 15-day DL or something

Maybe Salaam makes openning day roster as #10 (inactive) but I doubt it. I'm excited about this group and feel great about it... Lots of athleticism, youth, and versatility.
Just to get on the record - and be able to say I told you so - I still say there's no way Salaam's not on the 53 man roster come game one. The only way I see something else happening is if the knee is worse than we currently think and he ends up on IR. (And yes - you will be able to say I told you so should events warrant also).

That's not saying Butler won't make it - I think there's a really good chance they'll keep 10, and even if it's nine, I believe there's a pretty good chance Butler's still there.

Unless there's some unforeseen complication, Salaam is most definitely going to be on the 53.

They use to have a 4-week in season IR, but at that time the roster size was only 47. In '93 they increased the roster size to 53 (with 8 inactivated for game-day), and made the IR only for players lost for the entire remainder of the season.

i'm not sure what purpose working brisel at C is other than emergency stuff. White can play both C and G for sure.
The way Butler and Frye are playing, Salaam is the odd man out. With his having his kneee scoped, not practicing in the scheme, the Texans will not carry an aging OL, that has issues of staying healthy. Kubiak loves both Butler anf Frye, and the Texans carry 10 linemen. Butler can play LT or RT, Frye, RT or RG. You can also expect Eslinger to be cut as well.

I hadn't heard much of anything about Frye except that they had drafted him as a guard and then just in this thread that they've actually been playing him at Tackle. Last year, I was really hoping he was going to be that athletic tackle we needed for the ZB. But of course, he got injured early.

Has he been looking good in camp?

I went to four of the open session and I didn't even recall seeing him out there. However, I didn't specificially go watch the OL drills like PainKiller and Gary (I think) did. So my info is limited to the 11-on-11 and 9-on-11 snaps.

Like you, I thought he could be an athletic OT. But I haven't heard anything in the pressers or in the Chronic about him.

He was Virginia Techs LT in 2006 while Duane Brown was VTs RT at the other side of their OLine that year. Frye was very much like Brown in that he was very athletic while still having excellent functional strength, but we drafted him late in the second day of the Draft, 5th round I think, while of course we
used our first-rounder on Brown this year. And that's one of the reasons so many people were stunned by using such a high pick on Brown - many rated him MOL the same kind of prospect for the NFL as Frye.

Not sure where all the Frye love is coming from. Kubiak has described him and Butler as good young players but he says that about a lot of his 'kids.' Who has seen him play in a game wearing Texans gear? His stat sheet shows that he played in two preseason games last year but I've since erased them.

I hope he becomes a pro-bowler some day but what I've seen so far is a pretty low-key and relatively anonymous backup that hasn't really stood out - good or bad. He looks more like a G to me - and maybe an emergency backup RT. Maybe he's a guy that can take the next step under Gibbs. We'll see. We will certainly see more of him over the next two weeks with Weary, Jackson, and Salaam out. Hopefully he does well given the chance and surprises us like Brisiel.

I'm not sure I can accurately predict what I'm having for lunch, much less the o-line on the opening day roster. But I can list the locks, probables, bubble boys, and long shots.

Locks (unless injured)
Winston
Brown
Pitts
Myers
Briesel
Butler

Probable
Salaam - Has he accepted his role as swing tackle? Attitude is my only concern.
White - Backup center spot is his to lose

Bubble Boys
Weary - Can't make the team from the training table
Studdard - He seems like a Gibbs kind of guy
Frye - Needs some exposure at the guard position
Jackson - Mr. Versiltility. Has played at both guard & tackle for the Texans, and played center in college.

Long Shots
Eslinger - Has to standout in the preseason. Or hope for an injury.
Fenton - Who?
Tucker - Journeyman who has no chance to stick here. Could have started on some of the early Texans O-lines.

Well, after one game, I think a couple things became clear:

1. Eslinger won't make this team unless we are ravaged by injuries. He was awful!

2. I think you can move Frye into the probable category. He played very well the entire second half at RT, even played one down at LT when Butler limped off. So, not only did he play well, but has quite a bit of versatility if he can play both tackle spots and guard.

3. Butler was great and will clearly make the team.

4. I'm not sold on Studdard but apparently Kubiak is.

white is a lock in my opinion as well. #2 Center. (inactive on gameday unless Meyers is hurt) can play both guard positions. i think the whole point of having Briesel practice some C is so that we don't have to activate White. He's a lock though.
