He had become a pretty hard hitter in 2006 before missing all of last season. I think his most famous moment was blasting Jeremy Shockey's teeth out against the Giants in New Jersey. It was pretty sweet.

That said - he's not good in pass coverage... much better at run support. Demps took his job last year, and Earl's not getting it back unless something bad or unexpected happens in training camp.

I wouldn't exactly put it like this. Earl was injured and THEN Demps was signed. It's not like both were on the team and Demps took the starter spot away. But I do agree that Earl is better in run support.

CC is naturally a strong safety. In the Texans system, however, don't the safeties pretty much play the same position, which make them interchangable?

The SS in the Texans system still has more run support responsibilites, but you are correct in the sense that SS is not always "in the box" and FS is not a true center fielder. Given that they have not had a true centerfielder type, I don't know how much personnel has dictated the scheme.
