Tampa 2 Defense

Man this style of defense seems like the right fit for our team and maybe Ray Rhodes can bring down from Seattle with him and help call Smith call better plays because he is horrible.

At this point I'd be be ok with running any SCHEME as opposed to this nebulous defense we've seen under Smith.

I think our biggest problem this year was playing man on the outside. Dunta could hold his own the problem was always opposite of him being able to hold his own. While I'm sure there might be more comfort on one side of the field for a CB at times we needed him to lock on the other team's best opposing WR. The best example was the Panthers game. Out of the gate when i saw Steve Smith on Faggins i was blown away. Sorry but if an average fan can say what a mis-match I'd imagine the O-Coordinator and Steve Smith drooling.

Don't expect to see a Tampa 2 from Rhodes though. I personally am more hoping to see something more similar to Jim Johnson's Defenses in Philly.

DeMeco is capable of very deep drops so it's possible since the tampa2 style defense has the mlb covering lots of ground. I like to see him moved around and used as a weapon though.

I think that we will end up playing lots of zone defense all the same since they did it pretty well last year in spurts. The bodytype and game of the next corner they draft will give us some clues perhaps. It could be a signal to any of their scheme thoughts going forward.

I would be fine with Jim Johnson's attack defense but we don't have the players on the back to run it plus we don't have the pass rushers to run that defense.

The only thing We lack is a more consistant secondary as compared to Philly's. When they were busy making their NFC title games and eventually SB run they picked up corners Lito Shepard and Sheldon Brown to help man the outside in consecutive drafts. Being able to go to man on the outside is a big reason for their success which is why I'm hoping through FA or Draft we'll address CB. I saw a Bob Sanders like effect on the secondary after Demps was inserted into the starting lineup. You might have to play the Safeties back a bit but if they lay the wood then it gives the WR a moment of hesitation to go across the middle. I guess more of what I'm getting at is we're not as bad in the secondary as we give ourselves credit more as evidenced later in the season.

The Eagles have a great DL rotation and a subpar LB corps(even with the addition of Takeo Spikes).Trotter was a big MLB by most standards but he worked well in Johnson's Scheme because he helped hold the midle of the line against the run freeing up others on the outside. Knowing your personnel and what you can do with them is half of it and again i just haven't seen that evidenced by Richard Smith.

Add me to the list of people hoping to lure Justin Smith here or take a shot at Paul Spicer.

Our Secondary was decent with Daunta and horrible without him we definately need a good cornerback in free agency and at least another safety and pass rusher. We have to get more speed through the draft at OLB, RB, CB & DE.

I definately agree with the last part and wonder what you think where our best value at those positions would be.

I actually thought once Dunta went down our defense stayed aboutthe same if not looked a bit better because it FORCED us to play more zone in the secondary; which we should have been doing more all year.Also think Demps coming into the starting lineup helped a lot and I'm hoping we'll re-sign him. I'm curious to see what Brandon Harrison brings and if we'll see Brandon Mitchell? (safety from OSU)

I'm not holding my breath on none of the DB's you mentioned and I think we need to puge them and bring in Eugene Wilson & Mike Doss to compete with C.C. Brown & Mike Boulware who both play in schemes where they play different types of Zones like Tampa 2.

Seemed to me that we did better getting to the QB when we maned up and pressed the WR, but were sure more subject to the big play if we didn't at least make the QB nervouse. On the other side of the coin, it seemed to me that when we zoned we didn't give up many of the big plays, but teams marched on us pretty easy with the under stuff. I suspect that those statements kind of define the problems with each style of defense. As I see it, currently we only have one CB (Bennet) available that seems capable of holding up in man coverage and we only seem to have one safety available (Demps) that is capable of holding up in zone. I guess the draft will indicate the thinking about what style of defense we will run. the "bend but not break" (giving up short gains between the 20's and trying to make the offense settle for FG's) defense is a Ray Rhodes specialty....many fans hate this style of defense....get ready for it, cause I think we will see more of this next season....just a hunch.

I know the Pats run a 3-4 and not a 4-3 but it seems for what I can tell they run this type of system. While mixing in the occassional blitz (well more Blitz than we currently do), it is more about making the defense settle for short dump passes and hoping they get antsy and go for the deep pass and then create turn overs and 3rd and long and stops.

To many teams like the verticle game and are not willing to settle for the methodical march down the field and get the TD as was made famous by the Niners.

no, the pats run a sophisticated 3-4 with lots of elements of all defenses...I've never seen them go into a zone shell and lay back passively as a core element like I've seen lots of Rhodes defenses do.
