Texans coach Gary Kubiak turned slightly evasive Monday when asked about Houston's needs in the NFL draft. "It's a little too quick to address that," the head coach said. "We have to sit back and evaluate our football team. The tricky thing in football nowadays is you've got a chance to take care of some of your needs in free agency."
Before long, though, Kubiak made it obvious that the Texans' priorities are No. 1, the secondary; No. 2, running back; and No. 3, offensive line. http://www.statesman.com/sports/cont...101texans.html

I agree with Kubiak, he definitely knows large areas of weakness but they really need time to evaluate the team in it's current and ongoing position BEFORE even thinking about Free Agency and the Draft. It was like after we were 2-0 this season Kubiak said something to the effect, "We still have a long long way to go to be a great team". A lot of people came down hard on him but he spoke the truth. Even if we hadn't have had quite as many players go on Injured Reserve this season we're still looking at a NEED at Left Tackle, possibly a better young Center w/ McKinney/Flanigan's age, possibly a running back depending on the effectiveness of Green, a Speed Rushing Right Defensive End, upgrades at OLB, one other Cornerback that's starter quality, and most likely a Free Safety that has better ball skills (although I like Demps and think he's solid). Until then, we may get to the playoffs but we're not going to consistently and not consistently win our division. That's even IF we didn't have any major injuries!!!
Interesting to look at the breakdown of our record this season: AFC South: 1-5 Outside Division: 7-3 Teams in the playoffs: 2-6 (wins against JAX and TB, losses to AFC South and SD) Teams not in the playoffs: 6-2 (losses to Atlanta-ouch and Cleveland) The good news is that FOR THE MOST PART, we are beating the teams we are supposed to and I think that is the first part in your team becoming successful. If we can continue to have a 6-2 record against non-playoff teams ANd not from our division, all it takes is an upset here or there and a win here or there against the AFC south and we are 9-7.

I like the attitude of making the playoffs a motivating goal, which it should be for any team in the NFL. But, that elusive winning record is still unavailable, so hopefully that's not another 'baby step' we have to take before going to the playoffs. I'd like to see both happen at the same time, preferably next season!

"Where I was for so many years (with the Denver Broncos), people used to think that all we talked about was winning the Super Bowl. The only goal we had each season was the playoffs," he said.
******************************* That's my favorite remark from his statements here. It's always seemed somehow presumptuous to me to have the organization, even McNair, saying their goal was to win the SB. A teams goal should be to make it to the playoffs, the post season and from there you do your best regardless of home-field advantage or not. Usually the hottest teams with the fewest injuries go the deepest into the playoffs, regardless of RS records. I think the attitute about post-season play that Kubiak brings to Houston is another very good lesson he learned from his previous employer. |

Seasons with Kubiak/Smith:
1st - 6-10 ............ Tons of injuries, first year starting over after Capers/Casserly, still had Carr 2nd - 8-8 .............. Led the league in turnovers, IR'd players, last two drafts showing lots of promise. 3rd - 10-6 or more? ...Why not? Seems very possible to me & playoff bound.

I believe the theory that any healthy NFL team can have a winning record and possibly make the playoffs. The talent level is so similar in the NFL that something like having all your player's healthy is a major advantage over other teams. An advantage that I think we've yet to enjoy in our franchise's history. Correct me if im wrong but I dont think we've had a year where we weren't in the top 10 in players on IR.
