"Belichick has avoided those issues so far by dealing coldly with some players. He called in safety Lawyer Milloy just before the start of the 2003 season and demanded he take a pay cut.
When Milloy refused, Belichick cut him on the spot." ************************************************** ******** This kind of cold hearted discipline is a key to Belichick's success, no doubt. |

well as long as you keep winning.. you can afford to cut proven players and replace them with nobodies. his good judgement has kept him from being labeled as a heavy handed ignorant jerk.. and instead he has become the greatest mind in football.
and really its hard to base things on the salary cap. Sure we may have less cap space this year.. but depending on how the contracts were written.. we could be one of the lowest next year. it all depends on what season a particular player is in on his contract. Casserly is right though about an expansion team having more troubles with that kind of stuff. Once some of the older more expensive players leave us, and are replaced by our own draft picks and such.. we will be in a much better situation. |

"Yet even if Belichick never wins another championship, every fan in every other NFL city can hold his own team to a higher standard because of him. He has made it look easy."
There are no excuses with Belichick, as every team faces the same obstacles during the season. The difference is that 'B' does not lower his standards or expectations like other Coaches do. You won't here 'B' say he didn't blitz because it would have meant single coverage, and his players couldn't have made the coverage. Of course, the purpose of the blitz is either to sack the QB or pressure him into a poor decision which would negate the risk of single coverage. Capers? He just doesn't blitz.

Let me start off by saying Howdy Yall.
Second let me get to my point: Your a fool if you say this young franchise has failed because they are not modeling the New England Patriots. That is kind of what this article hints at. There is nobody in the NFL that models after the New England Patriots, and there will never be. What the New England Patriots have is special. It is in there heart and in there mind. It starts with Scot Pioli. When he goes out and gets FA's, he is not looking at stats or if this guy is a big name player. He goes out and gets a guy that wants to prove himself with a team and who wants to put everything and give everything in to win a championship. Quote:
There system also revolves around not letting one player be the spot light. By this I mean in there offense, they don't rely on one player. Sure they rely on Tom Brady, but in there receiving core, you can argue on day long who is there #1 receive. In there defense they allow everyone to make plays, Burschi, Vrabel, Colvin, McGinnest, all of those guys make plays on a regular basis. At the end of the day they don't blame one person saying "Oh well this guy didn't step up". This organization is run prefectly. They have the right guys making personal and draft decesions, right guys coaching, the right guys running the plays, its a team effort in all areas. There will be no one that can do it as well as the Patriots. But, there luck might be running out................

They had the NE linebacker on 610 one day last week and he said they have success because they believe in the system...if they don't they don't hang around long and they are unbelievably well coached. He said they will go into a defensive alignment that they haven't been in for months if the coach wants to change. He said Belichick is unbelievably smart with defensive schemes. They adjust. They believe. They don't keep guys around that don't want to be part of the team. It's team above everything with that group.

Compare the Pats starters from Sunday's game to their roster from three seasons ago when they beat the Rams in SB XXXVI.
3/5 of the o-line is different (Light and Andruzzi are the only ones still there). Different TEs (Graham and Fauria vs. Wiggins and Rutledge) Completely different backfield (Antowain Smith and Marc Edwards gone - Faulk remains). Added Givens and Branch at WR (Troy Brown and Patten remain) Same QB On the defense, they have a totally different secondary; now Gay, Samuel, Wilson, Harrison vs. then Law (hurt in 04), O. Smith, Milloy, and T. Jones. Back then, they were playing 4-3 and on the DL they had Hamilton, Mitchell, Seymour, and Pleasant. Now they have Seymour, Wilfork, and Green. Their strength (LBs) remained the same (Vrabel, Bruschi, Phifer, McGinest). They have had a lot of turnover since the 2001 season (except for QB and LB) and if anything they've gotten better. IMO the majority of the Pats success is due to the coaching, play calling, and schemes. The Pats are not a team loaded with Pro Bowl talent although they have some standout players on both sides of the ball. Overall their team is built with a lot of solid players and depth, not just a few Pro Bowlers surrounded by a team. And I am really wanting to see how they do next season with Crennell and Weiss gone, because I heard today on ESPN that the biggest free agent they will have to sign this offseason is Adam Viniateri so the majority of the players should return next season.

over a long period of time to be effective. We have another example of this with the Chargers, who threw a group together during the offseason that was effective enough to get the Bolts into the playoffs. |

Wouldn't every team like to have the genius mind of Belichick!
It will be interesting to see what happens when Brady asks for more money. He needs Belichick as much as Belichick needs him. Although with three rings, what does he want for more now .. another ring or fatter paycheck. |

I will. Capers isn't head coach material. We will have to wait 5 years to figure it out though. |

Until someone else shows up to prove him wrong, Bellichek is the man. He and Pioli have built a wonderful organization. It can be said that the Patriots whole is better than the sum of the parts. They have the BEST head coach. They had the BEST coordinators till Weise and Crennel got head coaching positions. Yes, time will tell, but I'll bet you right now the Patriots are right in the thick of things for the Championship next year.
I would hope that the Texans could emulate the Patriots, but I also know that each team has to be built in its own way. I am not at all sure, anymore, that Dom Capers is the answer for our ultimate SB head coach. He is just too darn conservatgive for my liking. He also doesn't seem to be able to plug in the right coach, or player, for the right position. It may just be the youth of this team, but I am fast beginning to doubt Mr. Capers. Yes, we have shown steady improvement in our won loss record. But the closer we get to 8-8 and beyond, the harder it becomes. Heres hoping I'm wrong.
