Texans, Pick Your Scheme....pick Your Players

The more I look at our situation, the more I am bothered by one apparently glaring oxymoron. We have been told that our offense is a “hybrid” of the Denver Kubiak finesse blocking scheme and the Sherman Green Bay Power scheme. The Denver scheme requires smaller, light-footed linemen. For the Green Bay scheme to work, there needs to be large, ox-like linemen ploughing the way. We’re going to have pick which scheme to go with consistently, unless we want to carry 2 sets of linemen.......and 2 sets of running backs. Here, maybe, I can help with the decision........you call it in the air........

At the start of the season we had three original Texans on the OL . I guess that was from the AFLAC scheme . That's when you turn around and yell ... duck .

IF, IF, IF you can get the right guys and coach it correctly, I think the ZB is the better of the two for a run game. However, IMO it's easier to find the power guys and to coach the power system, so given that I would go with the power blocking group. I also think they are probably better suited to provide better pass blocking as they can man-up better against the defense and not get pushed around as easly.

Agreed, Kube and Sherman have two totally different styles. IMO there are too many cooks in the kitchen.

I believe Sherman was a good influence on Kubes and his first HC job, but its time to go. Its time to let Kube run his style of offense and stock our own personnel.

Sherman needs to take the Aggie job next year, recruit well and then send them to the Texans.

I believe it is possible, albeit highly improbable, to amass an Offensive Line capable of excelling at both the finesse and power blocking schemes. That would require large, yet nimble Offensive Linemen to make it work, and of course there would be a premium on that rare combination of size and athleticism.

If the Texans decided to go with one or the other, I think it should be the finesse system, since it has been proven to be possible to assemble a great Offensive Line for this scheme using low draft picks. I'm not sure the same can be said for the power blocking scheme.

Which implies the lineman would be the "creme de la creme", which is clearly anything but the talent level of the Texans OLineman. I dunno if it would be a "rare" combo, but it would represent a player of an unusual combo who would be among the highest compensated lineman.
But they clearly have had "focus creep" on their Olineman selection as illustrated in this past years Draft. On the one hand they took the athletic Brandon Frye, well suited for ZB schemes, and then drafted the plodding
Kasey Studdard, an obvious power type Olinemman ill suited for the zone
schemes. The Texans really are gonna have to have more direction and discipline in their player selection philosophy, and that obviuosly starts with
with internal agreement and then focus. In other words, lets everybody get on the same page.
