Austin residents

If anyone here lives in Austin, you probably know CBS has been broadcasting Titans games I guess since that disasterous '05 season. Who could really blame them then? The upcoming '07 season probably has me the most excited in the short history of this franchise, but I think CBS will continue to broadcast Titans games.

What can be done?

If you do a forum search, I beleive there was some lengthy discussions with people in the Austin and SA areas that wrote to the local stations... With not much luck, as a I remember... Some folks posted their letters AND the responses that they had received from the station..

I haven't seen Big Wig around in a while, but I beleive he was one...

the station doesn't care..... i just switched to direct tv.... or go to a sportsbar on gamedays.

Tennessee is going to get stomped on this season and they'll get the "Texan Treatment" from Austin's crappy CBS affiliate.

The good news is that they usually start the season showing Houston games in hopes of a good season from my Texans. An opening week win vs. the Chefs will be a nice start. Two vs. TEN will be even better.

Yep, we need the Texans to do their part, win, in order to have a leg to stand on.

In my opinion if both teams, Titans and Texans, are doing poorly we will see Titans games as long as VY is taking snaps.

Yup. Austin caters to the all the VY - Longhorn homers.

I say that the Austin Chapter of the Texans Fan Club adopt Third Base as the official site of game watching.

The food is not as good as The Shoal Creek Saloon, but the Saints Fan Club has already squatted there for some time now. There are plenty of HD screens and attentive wait staff. JMHO.

That might be fun, Kaiser T has been there also.
I used to run everything out of the Saxon, and they fed us( for free), discounted drinks, bought us shots, waited on us hand and foot. Not to mention we had the place all to ourselves, totally rival the Shoal Creek Saloon, but when the games went awry on KEYE we just couldnt get anyone to come. I have a mailing list of at least 50 or so from these boards.
So here we are now, and I have Direct TV NFL ticket( always have), a 56" Samsung HDTV, and really dont care to spend cash when I dont need to, but if ya'll show up I will meet you for sure.

I have posted this last year while I was living in Marble Falls (Austin viewing area), but will post again. This is the response I got from them:

Thank you for writing to KEYE. Your comments go right to the heart of
what has become a rather heated topic. On one hand we have the fans of
the Houston Texans (a team we have given a great deal of support to over
the past four-and-a-half seasons) and on the other hand we have a large
number of Austin football fans who are equally as vocal and want to see
the Titans games.

The last Texans game we aired (last Sunday) was tuned-in by just 21,000
households in Austin (a city with 589,000 households). By comparison,
the Titans game we aired on Oct 8th (after Vince Young became
quarterback) was watched by over 53,000 households (152% more football
fan's homes). At one point during that game there were as many as 68,000
households tuned in. It was the most-watched "early" game we've aired
all season. Actually, that game was watched by more Austin fans than any
Texans game we've aired going all the way back to October of last season
- with two notable exceptions. The first is when the Texans played the
Cowboys on October 15th (which you could expect to be highly watched)
and the other, honestly, was when the Texans played the Titans on
October 29th.

I am not bringing up these facts in order to belittle the Texans. (I can
assure you, there is no one on the surface of the planet that wants the
Houston Texans to succeed more than KEYE). I bring up these facts only
to add some perspective to what is a truly difficult situation (for both
the television station and the fans). Obviously, no one forces anyone to
watch anything - people "choose" what they want to see. And, if you view
these numbers (as we must) in terms of serving people with programming
they want to watch - then you have a real problem when you see that the
two most-watched (most-chosen) Texans games in the past umpteen games
were when they played the Cowboys and the Titans.

So, where does all this leave us now? To try and answer that, we need to
go back to the start. In the Texans' first season KEYE aired every
Texans game we could get our hands on. In the second season we did the
same thing, no matter how bad the actual football games were, and in the
third season we did it yet again. (No one could claim that KEYE hadn't
done its best to put Texans games on the air in Austin).

In the fourth season, last year, we aired every Texans game we could -
even after it was abundantly clear they would have their worst season to
date. What was once just a steady flow of email to the station
(questioning why the heck we were airing Texans games when there was
much better competition) had become a roar that we simply could no
longer ignore. In that season we aired every Texans game we could in
August, September, October, and November. Our last Texans game was
December 4th with just 15,000 households watching, and then we moved on
to other games that had actual play-off implications. The very next
non-Texans game we aired that year was tuned-in by almost 75,000 homes.
In other words, we did the best we could do.

That is pretty much where we are today. KEYE has not jumped ship on the
Texans. KEYE has no plans to jump ship on the Texans. However, in light
of what the majority of FANS who watch football are telling us with
THEIR choices, it is clear that we have to have some balance when it
comes to picking games. One point of view we hear all the time is "to
heck with the Texans, put on the best, most competitive game every
week". While that is an admirable plan, the fact is that KEYE has made
an effort to build the Texans franchise in Austin, and we owe it to
those fans to keep their games in mind. At the same time, we now have an
even larger audience of Vince Young/Titans fans which we must also serve
- not to mention the fans who just simply want to see the best game of
football they can find on a Sunday afternoon.

As it stands right now, we cannot guarantee that we will air Texans
games just because they're Texans games. We can't make that guarantee to
Titans fans either. For the remainder of the season we are going to
continue to strike a balance and (as we have done in the past) try to
serve all our football viewers to the best of our ability (even as we
know that we can never please everybody all the time). We make our game
choices two weeks out from the day of the game, and will continue to
post our match-ups on the various television guides.

As a fellow fan, what we need more than anything right now is for the
Texans to start playing with confidence and start winning some games.
Just looking at the bare-bones facts from these past four-and-a-half
seasons, it is easy to see that KEYE is pulling for them to do just
exactly that.

OK, so as the season approaches, let us coordinate activating the Texans Fan Club of Austin. Meanwhile, I'll see about getting some sort of commitment from Third Base: I'd like to see them advertise or promote as the "official" Texans place to watch in Austin, ala Shoal Creek for the Saints. As a countermeasure to K-EYE uncertainty, we will absolutely need Sunday Ticket. I know there are other places in town that carry the Sunday Ticket, but Third Base would be optimal first shot given the location, free parking (good call!), and brew selection.

Dang, sounds like Texans fans are the real Rodney Dangerfields of Austin. You're behind the Cowboys, Titans, & even the Saints in the peking order over there ?
And to think, Big Bobby McNair was an astute businessman who you'd think has some feel for PR ? Whatever goodwill his team had at the beginning, its all gone now and he's gonna have to earn every fan back.

Agree completely about McNair. I think that he should try to market to other Texas cities outside of Houston.

The Saints don't have a real big fanbase in Austin per se, they just have a fan club that's carved a pretty deep niche.



BTW, in case you can't you can't tell, then that Saints helmet used to be a Volkswagen Beetle.
