A nice little quote from a book I just read.

I just finished reading Ed Fowlers book. "Loser Takes All: Bud Adams, Bad Football, & Big Business".

I thought I might share this quote from an old favorite player of mine.

"A lot of the younger guys are excited about going to Tennessee, but, to tell you the truth. I haven't felt that excitement yet. I'm a Houston Oiler, and no matter how many years I play in Tennessee, I'll always be a Houston Oiler."

Any guesses who it is?


How about Hall of Famer Bruce Mathews.

Props to Bruce. The book is pretty good. You can tell Ed doesn't exactly have a fondness for Bud. The book brought back a lot of old memories, both good and bad, and showed some the things going on behind the scenes. I had forgoten that Dud demanded a multi use domed stadium for him and the Rockets like had been built in San Antonio. We all know how that stadium has worked out. I also didn't remember that when Lanier found out Dud was going to get a much cheaper open air stadium in Nashville that he told Bud that he could get that deal here, but Dud wanted the cash in Nashville. It was published in 97' before we were on the radar to get a team back so it is a little dated, but a good read anyway.

It's funny you mentioned this. Why? Because I had a REALLLY weird feeling when we played the Titans this last year. It was the game we welcomed back all the old heroes and legends to our stadium, and there he was, Bruce Matthews. I got to see him quite up-close, but it just had a "wrongness" to it because he was standing on the TITANS SIDELINE! Right next to where my seat is (remember - they moved the BPPB down there a few years ago). I know he spent all those years with that "organization" and everything, but it just felt like a betrayal to see him THERE. With THEM. I brushed it aside, thinking that he just knew more of them and everything, and then I saw him talking and laughing with Jeff Fisher, and it felt like a knife in my gut. Two guys that were OURS. It just didn't set well at all.

I remember when he said that which you quoted, btw. I also remember at the time thinking he was one of the really GOOD guys. I still do. But I still feel...betrayed somehow by that display. Am I wrong?

Can we hold it against him? No. But should he have made it known he was a Houston Oiler? Yes! I mean, it was Houston rooting him on most of his career. It was in Houston that he made his name known. And it was in Houston that he played like a Hall of Famer. But, what can you do....

I don't hold it against him and I would probable still feel the pain in the gut you mentioned. I would hate to be put in such a position where I would have to do something that made one large group of people so happy and totally anialate a large group of people that had my fans for years. There was one little snippit from another former play I had respect for that took some of that respect away. I will try to locate that one again.

Ed Fowler....I haven't heard that name in years. He was on the "Three Amigos" radio sports show before they had all-sports radio in Houston. I remember setting my schedule around the football shows, because they always had some good stuff.

I did not know that he wrote a book, though. I'll definitely try to find a copy, because it sounds like a good read for old Oiler fans. I wonder what ever happened to him?

I've always liked Bruce Mathews, but disagreed with him when he implied that the "Music City Miracle" in Tennessee made up for 35-3. No Bruce, it did not. Maybe to you as an individual, but not to your old school fans. The memories of the Houston Oilers will always be tainted by that fateful day in Buffalo, and that's one franchise record that the Titans can keep. It is their destiny to be a choking franchise. One yard short against the Rams reinforces that point.
