Default NFL.com on gado

http://www.nfl.com/nflnetwork/story/10217481

Quote:
(June 7, 2007) -- Some players miss offseason conditioning drills because they want a new contract. Others are unhappy with the direction of their teams. But Houston running back Samkon Gado has the greatest excuse in National Football League history.

Gado missed four weeks of conditioning drills in Houston's training facility because he has been ... studying for his medical boards.

There's a sentence that might never have been written before, ever.

Gado is scheduled to take the MCATs July 13 in Columbia, S.C., with the hopes of becoming an orthopedic surgeon after his football career.

"I wanted to take the MCATs in May," Gado said Thursday, "but when I saw the size of our playbook, I pushed it back to July."

Texans head coach Gary Kubiak has been as accommodating as he needs to be for Gado, who is one of the great men in the NFL. Essentially, in Gado he trusts. It also has helped that Gado has put himself through his own rigorous workouts in South Carolina, when he wasn't studying three hours a day for the MCATs.

"This is the best shape I've ever been in," Gado said. "I promise you, I wasn't sitting around South Carolina just studying and doing nothing. Now that I'm back here training, it's like I'm taking a break."

Upon returning to Houston, Gado also has been reunited with his former Packers teammate Ahman Green, one of the Texans' two high-priced, high-profile acquistions.

"As soon as he came in, I called him and said, 'Man, I'm trying to start a career here, leave me alone!'" Gado joked. "No, I love Ahman. I told him that it's a blessing to have him here. I don't say that because I'm supposed to. I say that because I mean it. Anything that he has done I want to do because I want to have the success in this league that he has."

Gado's success goes beyond the league. He is a student of the game, and of medicine, which he began learning about when he was a pre-med major at Liberty University. Gado will face plenty of tests in training camp. But no test will be bigger than the one he faces July 13.

I really hope he manages to find more success in Houston this season, sounds like he is a stand up guy, once again going along with the track record of Houston only having the good guys of the NFL, makes a change to hear these nice stories instead of the likes of Vicks dogfighting and Pacman Jones's quest to be charged for everything in the book.

I remember seeing that piece on him last season too about wanting to go to med school and eventually to become a doctor back in his home country... Good for him, pro sports needs more stories about the "good guys" (and there are plenty) in the media instead of the sensational stories about the bad guys.

There was a piece on the official board about Gado, and Kubes was raving about the way he has been practicing. He said Gado has been practicing like a man possessed or something like that. Good to see one of the real good guys in this league on the Texans.

Here is the blurb I was thinking of. The link can be found in the commander Schaub thread, which is where I pulled this from -

Gado impresses: At this point in the offseason, anyone who follows the Texans is aware of their situation at running back. After the position was one of the weakest prior to last season, it has emerged as the strongest heading into this season.

“We’ve got six guys lined up back there, including this young guy from Notre Dame (Darius Walker) that can play,” head coach Gary Kubiak said Monday. “The competition is exceptional and the work load is very even.”

Cleary all six won’t be on the roster when the Texans host the Chiefs Sept. 9 and it had been widely speculated that the quartet of Walker, Wali Lundy, Chris Taylor and Samkon Gado may be fighting for just one roster spot behind Ahman Green and Ron Dayne.

Since Gado is the eldest of the four, it seemed logical that he had the most ground to make up this offseason in order to keep his spot on the team. It appears he has made up the ground and perhaps more.

“I’m impressed with what he’s doing on the football field,” Kubiak said. “He reminds me, I told him the other day, I had Mike Anderson in Denver that had a rough year one year and then all of a sudden came back in the offseason and it was like he was possessed the way he practiced and worked.

“It was like holy smokes. You watch the kid out here practice right now and his effort on the field is incredible. He plans on getting something done. I would be very surprised if he doesn’t do it.”

If Gado has been noticeably practicing like "a man possessed", he is going to play like one....that's just how it goes...

We'll see though...

I wasn't that impressed with Gado as a runner last year...he seemed to lack the vision, and he didn't seem to have the physical skills for his type of running style...He says he's in the best shape of his life though....

If the change at QB will be somewhat easy, I expect to see a big change in how this team acts on the field. Sometimes all you need is to put in new batteries, I'm hoping that Schaub is that battery that's needed to get this thing going!

I like this kid. Hard worker and smart as anyone. I wish him well with his tests, and most importantly (to us), the 2007 season.

I hope he can pick up a blitz as well as he picks up those books!
